 Tifu was BORED.
Bored, bored, bored, bored!
The cub opened an eyelid to peek at her sleeping family, her visible green eye shining brightly as she swished a tail in annoyance. Yes, it was night time, and the stars had scattered themselves over the dark sky, but they didn't seem to be able to lull Tifu into sleep. She flipped herself to lie on her back, staring up at them.
Having a staring contest with stars twinkling back was no fun! They didn't know how to play staring games well! Getting up with a pout upon her maw, Tifu turned to stare at her sisters and her mother, wishing they were awake to play with her, and wear her down a bit so she could sleep!
Padding over to her mother, she nudged the lioness with a light headbutt. "Moooooom." Tifu whined. "I can't sleep!"

 Truthfully, neither could she. Hyun was far too worried about her only son to rest, but sleep came with the exhaustion, though it was very short lived. Groaning, and feeling far more aged than the young mother really was, she rolled over to her daughter and used her long legs to draw her in close. "What is it, honey? You can't sleep? Just try harder." She draped a paw over the tiny mass and dropped her head next to Tifu. She lay like that for a moment, as though trying to take her own advice, but nothing came to her. No reprieve and no sleep. But out of self-loathing, Hyun wished it on herself. Her little baby probably didn't have that luxury either. She sighed, not meeting her daughter's eyes, the green of her father's. They would be all the more reason to hate herself.
"I'm sorry Tifu. I don't know how to help..."

"I tried." Tifu said as sincerely as she could muster, green eyes wide, eyelids showing no signs of drooping anytime soon. "I dunno why." She snuggled next up to her mother's warmth, squeezing her eyes shut while breathing in slowly, attempting to let herself go away to dreamland. For a moment, with Tifu lying still in Hyun's embrace, the latter might have thought her daughter would fallen asleep.
But, as luck would have it, eyes snapped open again, and she pouted. "Nope, not working." She fell into silence, debating, wondering, and chancing a glance up at the stars (They winked at her! Hah, they had lost!) when an idea struck her. "Could you tell me a story, mommy?"

Hyun thought to herself, 'Ugh, children.' Though the thought might have had a less-than negative connotation, she smiled at her daughter drowsily, the energy of youth certainly not lost in this one. But she asked for a story. Hmmm. The mother didn't have very many child-friendly experiences to pass on. 'Oh, wanna know about the time I met your father and he temporarily crippled me? Howabout the one where he dumped some of his children on me as an adolescent? Oooh, better yet, the night of your conception!' Nope, nothing there. She'd have to make one up, or at least severely twist and turn one until it was fine for a bedtime story. Pursing her lips, she still thought hard, staring up in the same direction as her daughter, but instead of finding the same the simple pleasure, she felt insignificant.
"Oh, howabout a story about your brother, Tifu?" She tilted her head and smiled, still whispering as to not wake up Tiibu.

"My brother?" Tifu echoed, wide-eyed with curiosity at that thought. Her mother didn't really like to talk about her brother, although Tifu did wish she had more, or at least one brother around that she could play rough with! Tibu was nice to play with at times, but not all the time! She often had to resort to finding other playmates, like the stars, who were really really hard to play with sometimes because she couldn't find them in the day. "Alright." She conceded, leaning on her mother as she nodded. "Tell me about him!" Her voice also lowered as she said this, but to Tifu, this was because it was like her mother was telling her a secret. And you had to be quiet and not let anyone else hear a secret, right?

Hyun, eyes wide to swallow up all of little Tifu, started off in a hushed voice, also to get her to listen closer, however, the softer tone would hopefully lull her to sleep. "When your brother was born, Ciao, he was so handsome! Black as coal and as the night, his eyes shone like the deepest waters! But his ears, so silly, they were orange, and his tail yellow. His belly, though, was the color of you and me, and not much else from us. He was so small when he was born! You all were! But he grew quickly. And that little Ciao-su son of mine, his dreams were big too. Before he was any bigger, he already wanted to go out and find adventures. But sometimes, that got him into a looooottt of trouble."
The mother felt horribly guilty to string along the tale as though Ciao wanted to leave, rather than her own god-forsaken inexperience had lost him. In her defense, she'd sought him for days that turned to weeks, days and nights alike, but he just seemed to fall off the face of the earth. It broke her heart, and she hated herself for it, but soon she would have to move on.

"He's black?" Tifu asked, face scrunched up in curiosity and thought. She didn't really remember her brother much; and then after, she had been always with her mother and sister that she had the idea that their family all had fur like sand. Well, mother said some part of him was. She tried to imagine what her brother could have looked like in her own mind, but it was silly because she kept deviating and putting stars in his fur. In the end, she just gave up and sighed.
"Adventures are fun!" She said with a wag of her tail. "Why didn't he ask us along, mom?"

Hyun nodded, one of her parents had been dark-coated, and it seemed to skip a generation to Ciao. Perhaps the same colors would show up in one of Tifu's future litters. Ha, the thought of her children having kids of their own made her grimace and feel old. But the mother hoped strongly that Ciao would- if he was still alive.
Rolling over, Hyun threw her leg over her daughter once more and drew her in close. "It was too dangerous for all of us to go! No, he was going to the scariest of places. I wouldn't have been able to make it, and you couldn't either, I don't think. It was something only he could do."

"I could handle it!" Tifu declared, pouting at the thought of her brother thinking so little of her. "I'm as brave as any boy! He would need company anyway." Being lonely was boring; he would have no one to play with! Tifu did not know whether she should envy him at this moment, or not. But Ciao really should have asked her along on his adventures! They would have had so much fun together!
"Maybe he'll get lonely and come back and get me." The sandy cub said with a firm nod. "It's not fun going on adventures by yourself. Besides, he probably misses his mommy and his sisters."

Hyun laughed softly so as to not wake Tiibu. "Yes, you're very brave, but there are things only you can do, things only I can do, and things only Ciao-su can do. He left to do those things. And yes, honey," She nuzzled her baby, "he misses us very much and he does want company, but it's very very dangerous." Hyun rested her head on the baby.
"Maybe he'll come back. Maybe." The mother sighed. Her poor, poor son.
If he was even still alive.

Tifu pouted, still not satisfied with that explanation. Really! Her brother thought too little of her! When she found him, she was going to tell him exactly what she thought for leaving them behind! Secretly, she worried too, and wondered what dangers Ciao-su faced out there in the world. What if mean birds tried to peck his fur off? What if he had no one to play with at all?
"One day, we'll find him." Tifu declared with her utmost determination, and then stifled a yawn with a paw. "We will. Families have to be with each other." The cub settled her head on her paws, eyelids slowly drooping. "And then I'll make him apologize from wandering off without me..."

Hyun could tell that her daughter was almost asleep by the way her voice grew quieter and slurred. She licked her child the way mother do to put them to sleep, and she muttered her agreement. "Yes, of course."
"Mmmhm, honey."
She nuzzled Tifu and pulled her closer, as though holding her close would keep her from leaving her. Like Unguzo. Like Hitilafu. Like Ciao-su. Her parents. Her ears drooped and she drew in a breath that left as a rattling sigh. So many of her loved ones had left her. The mother wished that someday she would find a family and a pride that would stick around, support her, and maybe someday she could have another litter and a father to help raise them.
Hyun put her head down on the grass and closed her eyes. Someday.The end.
