Don't bother even reading or picking up or even acknowledging the existence of any Dune not authored by Frank Herbert. He is the master of blending philosophy, politics and sociology together in a story filled with characters you are invested in. Without giving too much away of the later books, many characters like Leto II, Paul Maud'dib and Duncan Idaho make you think and care about what happens in the stories. Also, the novels span tens of thousands of years, even with the same few characters, which brings much to debate about cloning and prolonging life with artificial means, technology and ecology.
Read em. You won't regret it once you give them a shot. They take a while to really understand, even after the second or third time through. But they stick with you.
