Heavy footsteps, by speed alone. The sound of something shaking within a prison of fabric. And then, from these light hints...
Well, Ella had to wake Captain Laurence somehow--hitting and kicking the door would be pretty effective, she thought. It's loud, annoying, and probably enough to get even the heaviest sleeper to the door at two in the morning. If it wasn't, she'd start yelling. And no one wanted that.
But what happened in her room wasn't exactly... peaceful. That's a good way to put it. Not-peaceful. Laurence would be the solution.

Gods, what was it now?
His first thought was that it might be yet another attempt by Dagon to harass him. But no, not the man's style. Too loud. Too straightforward. Too... obnoxious, not enough creepy. Nope, this was probably an honest-to-goodness real emergency -- or, more accurately, something that a crew member THOUGHT was an honest-to-goodness real emergency.
Fantastic.
It took him a minute or so to disentangle himself from the bedsheets. "Coming," he called in the direction of the door, or at least syllables that might approximate for that word. Two in the morning was not a good time for higher cognitive functions. Anything above breathing, really. Yet he successfully found pants, put them on, and then approached the door. Didn't bother with a shirt, though -- anyone willing to wake him at this ungodly hour had better be prepared to deal with bare chest.
As he opened the door, he lifted a hand to his temples and rubbed it lightly, trying to quell the headache that lurked there. His vision thus obscured, he didn't really bother to look at his visitor beyond bare feet before responding "Yes?"

Ella hoped he wouldn't react badly to her not-quite-nudity. Actually, he seemed a little too out of it to think about much more than going back to bed.
"I have a problem. And the only other person I can think of to go to is probably too busy masturbating to the thought of you to help me--I didn't think it'd do this, honest."
He could see the problem for himself--she shoved the backpack she had been carrying toward the captain. Fortunately, the creature wasn't moving around very much at the moment...
Ella hoped it wouldn't bite him. ...oh, she hadn't thought about that before. The biting thing. That might be a problem.

Laurence recognized the voice -- Emma? something like that? the girl with the odd-colored hair and the Girl Scout talents -- and dropped a hand to give her a nonplussed look. Which rapidly turned into a just-plain-blank look, because underwear? Really?
And then she followed up with a REAL brain breaker.
Ella used Unfortunate Mental Image! It was super effective! Laurence became confused!
"...Miss -- Mayfield, was it? I will gladly help you out with whatever your current predicament is... provided you never ever say that to anyone ever again." He reached out and took the backpack without really thinking about it. Whatever it was, it wasn't on fire, it wasn't ticking ominously, and it fit inside a backpack, so it couldn't be that bad.
Fangs sunk into his fingers the moment his hand closed on the bag, and he promptly dropped it. Angry small animals. He hadn't considered angry small animals.

Ella ignored the Captain's request and frowned when he dropped the bag.
"They're mean little buggers. And they're all over my room now, and I can't get rid of them. I didn't think the plant would hatch or anything. ...well, I thought it was a plant. Looked like one. The one I ate earlier tasted like one. ...but I guess not."
They kind of reminded her of a cross between the biggest Earth tarantula ever and a naked mole rat. Mostly the big, tarantula, and naked parts. Oh, and the ugly. Lots of the ugly.
She quietly hoped the not-spiders weren't poisonous.
