Year 2432 after the descent of God upon the world of Rafes Cerian, the land's inhabitants had developed upon it a civilization of both magical and technological wonder. According to ancient scriptures in the possession of the church and dating back to the time of God's descent, a protective measure to protect the world from being consumed by evil was erected, sealing the skies with a powerful void that tore apart anything that it comes into contact with. Despite the rapid advancement in technology that gave birth to creations such as airborne warships and humanoid fighting machines known as 'Aeons', the skies were the limit for the humans who lived upon the land as it shreded both man and machine alike in the failed attempts to break through that littered the long stretch of history leading up to the present.

Rafes Cerian was a world dominated by the church, where even the leader of an entire country spanning one third of the land's mass had to bow down to. In order to achieve this, the religious organization had not hesitated to aid the spread of its faith with bloodshed whenever and wherever it met resistance. Numerous countries were wiped clean from the map by the Church after being denounced with a fictitious crime of being in league with the forces of evil. However, there were also a minor number of genuine cases mixed within this hypocritical commitment to justice, whereby humans driven by the desire for power managed to summon forth demons through contracts.

With every drop of blood that dripped, a resounding echo could be heard within the confines of the empty church, forming an eerie rhythm that was easily audible in the absolute silence of the night. The crimson liquid flowing forth from Alice's wrist had formed a pool upon the dusty wooden floor as she stood before a statue that had been broken into halves from the waist, eyes closed as she waited in peace for death to claim its new prize.

The soft thud of the dagger coming into contact with wood was only moments before a second was heard, the girl slumping onto the floor as the last vestige of strength abandoned her thin frame. Extremely pale from the loss of blood, the girl looked like a beautiful marionette as she laid there in the moonlight. It had been a long and excruciating wait, with none to be with Alice as she drew a last breath before passing on to the world of spirits. Pain made the process seem to go on for eternity from her perspective, yet Alice kept a sweet and peaceful smile as she began to lapse into darkness, content in the knowledge that once the body failed completely she would again be reunited with the others.

The soft glow and warmth emanating from a diamond inlaid within the silver amulet of Laroth began to weaken, until the point when it vanished completely. Sorrow consumed Laroth, its thorned tendrils coiling tightly around his heart, bleeding it and asphyxiating the soul. Tears veiled his crimson eyes, though pride prevented him from ever shedding a single drop. Freezing as the wind may have been as Laroth swept through the skies, it was unable to sooth the rage burning away the last vestige of his sanity.

A deafening roar blanketed the moonlit night, as Laroth began to transform, a blood red glow enveloping the man. His entire body became covered with obsidian scales, as sharp crimson claws grew from the hands and feet where his nails once were. Howling like a wild injured beast, Laroth's silvery hair and raven feathered wings took on a shine of metal, threatening to cut any unfortunate enough to be grazed by them. The change was as swift and sudden as it came, lasting only mere seconds before it was complete. However, Laroth was already panting heavily and drenched in sweat from the searing pain experienced due to it. The glow that suspended Laroth began to subside as the man began to descend towards the ground, the last of it forming a crimson glowing pentagram on the back of his hands when his legs came back into contact with solid ground.

"Such sweet despair..."
A sensual voice resonated within Laroth's mind, as the deep rumble from the engines of aeons sent out to investigate began to permeate the air.

Other than the the readouts from the unit status monitor, almost nothing was visible upon Kaidan's viewing screen as the blue haired pilot yawned within the confines of his cockpit. 'Damn it. This kind of things had to occur just when I took over command of the 'Obsidian Guards'.'. Amongst the horizon were glistening trails of brilliant sapphire light being emitted by the propulsion drives of mass production Aeons, 'CX0013 - Templar'. Beams of bright search lights pierced through the night as they scanned through the area, though it was but a futile struggle to search for anomalies from the air with such a limited field of view. The area was verdant with vegetation, the canopy being superb cover for anything that could have been concealed within.

Heaving a loud sigh, Kaidan keyed in a set of commands upon the control panel. Upon confirmation of the activation code, the armor plating of the Aeon began to glow with a blueish hue. Kaidan's aeon, the 'CX0991 - Nexus' was a combat command unit piloted by commanders who haven't shown accumulated enough merit to justify the design and production of a custom aeon tailored to their needs and fighting style. Onboard the Nexus was a set of communications equipment and sensors, which are offline by default due to the immense mental burden that it places upon the user due to the huge influx of information when connected. Ceasing motion as the aeon redirected power towards the sensor arrays for a massive sweep, Kaidan slowly reclined upon the backrest, eyes closed in anticipation of the connection. A silent wave spread through the frosty night air, as the system went completely online, scanning the area with a multitude of sensors.

Laroth's crimson eyes glowed with a dangerous light while traversing through the dense vegetation, senses utilized to the max to avoid running straight into a member of the search party. Feeling the immense power granted to him was just pure ecstasy, almost to the point where the young man of demonic heritage was tempted to test it out there and then against the obsidian guards. However, Laroth fought the temptation with every shred of determination that could have been mustered, winning at least a brief duration of complete sanity to think. A presence swept through the area earlier, touching the minds of those whom it came into contact with, with no exceptions. That meant at least a detachment commander was with the search party, and that it was only a matter of time before the area would experience a complete lockdown. Even now the roars of aeons could already be heard coming from every direction.

Chosen to watch over the peace of the night, obsidian guards were the elites of the church's military arm. Even the weakest member of the obsidian guards could fight on even grounds against a level 'C' demon, which would require an entire section of seven normal soldiers armed with aeons. Laroth wasn't foolish enough to take on the entire search party, much less one that was lead by a commander. Making a desperate dash to escape the lockdown circle, it was but a fraction of a moment before the white frame of a Templar unit descended upon the spot where Laroth was, while its prey escaped undetected by the pilot.

About an hour after Laroth had broken through their lockdown circle, the search party gathered at the rendezvous point. The search ended up to be a complete waste of effort for the Night Guards, as the entire party failed to turn up even a single clue to what could have raised the alarm back then at the base. Analysis by the base showed that the disturbance was matched those caused by the intrusion of a level 'A' demon, but such an entity had always been monsters of gargantuan proportions. The entire stretch of verdent greenery was serene and tranquil, without the slightest indication that anything the size of an aeon or larger was even present at any point in time. Kaidan was drenched with sweat, the fatigue from running the sensor arrays for such a long time was not an ordeal that many could experience without the mind being overwhelmed by the load and losing their sanity in the process.

An encrypted communications channel was directed from the base towards Kaidan, cutting off everything else when it was patched through by the system. The angelic face of a young girl whose curly blonde hair, azure blue eyes and flawless complexion gave others the impression of a life-sized barbie doll came upon screen. However, Kaidan immediately tensed up when the sight greeted his eyes. Her existence was a secret to everyone but the higher echelons of the church, though at times Kaidan wished that he wasn't privy to it. Just the memory of Alicia tearing apart a death convict with her bare hands while wearing that innocent smile she directed at everyone was more than enough to send tremors down his spine.

"Supreme commander Alicia. How may I be of service to you?"

When Laroth stepped into the nearby town of Karadis, it was already a good hour past noon. Due to the alarm raised during the night, the streets were almost devoid of life save for a few stragglers, the remainder of the population choosing to hide within the confines of their homes. Looking at the inn that was just an stone's throw away, the young man could only shake his head in disappointment while walking towards it. The establishment stood out sharply against the backdrop of other private homes, its run-down state a sore sight to behold in comparison to the beautiful view. Cracks lined the peeling exterior paint, while vines grew into a tangled mess upon the rusted iron fences. If not for the occasional passerby and a brightly lit sign which indicated that the place was indeed open for business, Laroth would have merely dismissed it as an abandoned building.

However, when the young man entered the business establishment, it was a pleasant surprise to find that conditions within were completely unlike what was expected when thinking of the dilapidated external appearance. It was a quaint place, nicely furnished with wooden furniture and its cleanliness was just superb. The aroma of coffee lingered in the air, giving the place a very cosy ambient.

"Now. What do have here? It isn't everyday that we see someone with red eyes patronizing my little establishment." Just as Laroth was being lost in the peaceful ambience, a husky female voice echoed from the counter nearby. It wasn't loud, but remained clearly audible to the its intended audience. The young man turned to face the source of the comment, only to have his excitement of seeing beautiful silvery hair turn to disappointment upon realizing that its owner possessed azure blue eyes. 'A mixed blood kin.' Thought Laroth as he assessed the short but shapely lady before him. Though the ravages of time had denied her of youth, the lady's attractiveness had yet to be completely stolen away. Those of pure demonic heritage owned silvery hair and bright red eyes that seems to sparkle like a radiant ruby, which marked them distinct from the entire human race while those of mixed heritage inherited only the silvery locks of demonic blood. It wasn't often that people with mixed heritage was born, but standing there before Laroth was a living example. Children born to parents of both demonic heritage and human origin were few and far between because of the enmity shared between the two races, though many of those who do come into existence are often the subject of ostracism by others for their silvery hair and hated their unique heritage because it has brought them only humiliation in this world where humans dominated.

Seeing Laroth staring into space, the lady seemed to have gotten in an even worse mood, chiding the man. "What are you staring at? If you're not going to order anything, don't get in the way of my business by standing there and being an eyesore." That managed to jolt Laroth back into reality from his thoughts, an embarassed smile forming upon his face. Approaching the counter, the man tried to put on his most amiable demeanour while asking for a room to be had. However, it was only met with by suspicion from the lady, who demanded that his rent be paid upfront with the keys in her hand and looking at the rags on Laroth. Though once a fine silken robe, it was now all tattered and torn, with his bare back showing from the gaping hole left behind where his wings were before being kept. With his current appearance it was not far away from those of beggars out on the streets, and it was of little wonder that his ability to spend was being questioned. Laughing it off Laroth took out his coin pouch, and from it withdrew a gold coin, tossing it nonchalantly upon the counter. "I will be staying here for a while. Deduct my rent and expenses for food from it, I will top it up if the sum exceeds the coin's value. For now, just provide me with a simple breakfast." Without giving the lady any chance to consider the key was snatched from her fingers, Laroth already on his way towards the room number carved upon the key.
