Name: Rayner Selwyn Rain-er Sell-win, but if you must give him a nickname go for 'Rain', not 'Ray'.
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Occupation: Cartographer (map-maker) and explorer. He wouldn't make for a bad shepherd either. He can also do numbers, so if you need someone to keep track of stock he can do that, or he could come up with a plan to lay out a city if you want. Heck, he could just unload cargo! He is stronger than he looks after all, and so long as he can get on the ship he'll manage somehow.

Physical Description: Slight and slender, Rayner looks like he might blow away in a stiff wind. He stands at about 5' 3", but only weighs somewhere around 95 pounds. His skin is pale, he sunburns very easily but never seems to actually acquire color. Just burn and peel. His hair is such a light blond it almost appears to be white or silver. In fact, the only bit of color he seems to have are his astonishingly bright sky-blue eyes. Unfortunately, these are partially hidden by his glasses, as he cannot see a thing without them and corrective surgery was just too much money.

His attire is practical and neat, usually some kind of hiking shoes as he tends to do a good deal of walking in order to familiarize himself with the lay of the land. He often wears jeans, and a polo or buttoned shirt in neutral colors while he's in a public place. When he's out doing his job, however, his attire will reflect what ever it is he plans on doing. He usually wears a backpack with assorted items that might wind up being useful in it. This always includes rope, first-aid supplies, a notebook with several pencils, a canteen of water, a blanket, and a compass, though other things may be thrown in if he deems it potentially necessary. He also wears a whistle around his neck. Everywhere he goes, his walking stick goes with him. This is not because he uses it as a crutch, but because it is both useful and comforting, since his best means of self-defense are with his bojutsu (staff fighting). However, this fact is a massive secret, the fewer people that know the fewer who will ask him to demonstrate or be expecting the pale scrawny young man to be more than adept with it.

Personality: Rayner is shy. Painfully so. If you were to observe him you would come away with the impression that he is actually frightened of other people. He stutters and mumbles, if he speaks at all, and has great difficulty meeting anyone's eyes. If you try to shake his hand, he's likely to flinch. He's happiest alone, and takes great enjoyment from anything that does not involve being around civilization. He has always loved the wilderness, but with Earth's technology being what is was, with the population we had acquired, there was not a whole lot of wilderness left.

Rayner is an artist, but also possibly just slightly obsessive-compulsive. For instance, if you're wearing a shirt with a collar, and half of it is sticking up, it's going to bother him until you fix it. Otherwise, he's simply extremely organized, and very neat. He values his privacy, mostly just because he wants people to leave him alone. He also comes across as cautious or paranoid, due to his desire to always be prepared for whatever may occur. In spite of being incredibly bright and insightful, he is very quiet and rarely offers an opinion.

History: Rayner had a rather... disrupted childhood. Due to a case of 'teasing' going too far when he was six he was rendered nearly completely blind from a knock on the head. His mother wanted to pay for the surgery that could fix his vision, but his father argued that they didn't have the money for it. This argument escalated, an already poor, and rather abusive, situation now strained too far. His parents separated and then divorced before he was eight. His father never contacted them again, and after his mother passed away unexpectedly when he was ten he became a ward of the state.

He had a great deal of difficulty trusting anyone after this, and though he was a brilliant student, skipping two grades to enter collage at sixteen, and very active, he was never well-liked or even well-known due to his being extremely reclusive. He was friendly with animals, often able to persuade them to do things their master's couldn't, but he has no sense of how people really are, his perception warped by his very messy childhood. The two college classes he enjoyed most were art and geography, and so he had decided to merge the two into cartography , or perhaps he'd be the person to draw the diagrams in text books, when he first heard of the Peregrine mission.

The opportunity seemed too good to be true, and surely a penniless student like him had no chance at all at getting on board. Still, it seemed that he had to try at least, how often does one get a chance to start over in a completely new world after all? Much less find a place that wasn't filled with people. A whole new planet to explore and, possibly, simply vanish into. He'd have been willing to do any job to simply get there.

Particular Skills: Anything that has to do with exploring. Scuba-diving, spelunking, kayaking, rock-climbing, backpacking... He can use a both a knife and a gun, though he prefers to use his 'walking stick' (staff-fighting). He has an uncanny sense of direction, and has never gotten lost in the woods. He can also hold his breath for three and a half minutes. He is excellent with numbers and calculations, and if asked to give an estimate on something (weight, distance...) he's usually pretty accurate. With a talent for art, his scribbled reminders of what flora and fauna look like can actually be used by other people to identify the creatures, and his maps are spot-on as well as being easy to read and, if given the time, pleasing to the eye. Also, he has wonderful penmanship, bordering on calligraphy that is perfectly legible. He's very good with domesticated animals, though he's certainly not a vet or an animal trainer.

Other Stuff: He's not afraid of heights, small places, darkness, or anything else that would get in the way of what he likes to do. Regardless of the situation, he is able to maintain his calm and continue to be both logical and rational. However, the thought of speaking even to just one other person...
