Name: Ava
Age: 17 Turns
Sex: Female
Orientation: Straight (shockingly)
Craft: Weavercraft
Rank: Apprentice
Physical Description: Physical Description: Ava could almost be as pretty as her sister... if she wanted to. The truth is, the man that is looking for a girl with long hair and lovely curves will not find her in Ava. While her sister’s eyes are a warm and open sea-green or blue, Ava’s are as hard as agates. It’s in the expression, not the color; in all other ways their eyes are practically identical. Her hair is short, hacked off at her chin as if with a blade, and just as blonde as Karai’s. She is 5’6”, sort of wiry and long legged, with the muscles of a runner. Both girls took after their mother, and retain a hint of her pale skin. They used to burn when they were children, but exposure to the sun has toughened them up considerably, and they now tan just like other natives of Ista. While she has no real curves to speak of, she makes up for it in the fluidity of her movements. This is not a girl you want to mess with. Her features, like Karai’s, are small, sharp, and narrow, and while on her little sister the effect is softened by smiles, Ava’s only add to her intimidating demeanor.
Personality: While her sister remains forever the soft-hearted sweetling, Ava quickly understood that it was her duty to watch over them both. She grew up much quicker than Karai, losing her childhood perhaps more early than she should have, but she has absolutely no regrets. A cold and quiet individual, Ava will do whatever is necessary to protect both herself and, more importantly, her sister. She has no real interest in making friends so long as she has her sister with her, and as a result, she can be quite cold and abrasive to strangers. Still, she knows how to stay respectful to her elders or those higher than her in rank... so long as they play nice with Karai.
To say Ava is protective of her sister is an understatement. Anyone who wants to be friends with Karai, well... They'll have to go through Ava, first. And any friends of Karai will become reluctant friends of Ava as well. Once one gets past her bristling demeanor, they'll find she's not so bad. She's just a little bossy, and likes to be in charge of things. It's hard for her to sit back and do nothing, but she'll do it if she must. She's always had a taste for adventure, so the prospect of becoming a dragon rider is a dream come true for her.
When she's not at her sister's side (a rarity in itself), Ava loosens up almost entirely. She's still a highly independent girl, but all the intimidation she exudes falls away. She no longer has to worry about making sure Karai is all right, and she feels it's all right for her to talk to others and get to know them some. She still, however, has a nasty tendency to hold grudges, and will make sure to find a way to exact revenge on someone should they mock her or her sister where she can hear it. And though she's not above socking someone in the jaw, she finds the more subtle punishments are often the ones that are the worst.
History: Once upon a time, a pair of little girls were born to a Trader and his Weaver wife, one Turn after the other. They were happy girls, for the most part, and their parents were loving… loving, if not exactly responsible. Their father found it difficult to give up his wandering ways, and their mother was so in love with him that she happily went were he wished to go. The only problem was that they had Ava and Karai, neither of which were ready for the open road. Oh sure, if you grow up a Trader, you know what’s what, and how…
But Karai, little Karai, was not happy traveling all the time, losing what friends she made. At least she had Ava. When the latter turned ten, their parents decided that it was for the best to leave them with their uncle Fallan, their mother’s brother, and that was that. However, before they left they informed Ava that they were leaving Karai in her care, and that she was to see to it that her baby sister (by only a Turn) was well cared for. Ava took that pronouncement very seriously.
Their absent parents sent them packages from time to time, usually around their Naming Days, and at least one at Turn’s End. They were always little things, little gifts. Karai adored reading the letters that were sent with the packages, and avidly got to know what she could of her absent parents. Uncle Fallan, a Journeyman Weaver of considerable talent, rolled his eyes at this, and said with dismay that some people were too young to have children. Ava generally agreed. She, of course, was the woman of the household, and she took her responsibility very seriously, even if Fallan did not.
When Ava turned thirteen, and Karai twelve, the Journeyman took them both under his wing as apprentices… rather unofficially at first. They had been learning about the craft for quite some time, really, and had a good head start in the right (in Fallan’s opinion) direction. … Of course, often enough Karai did the weaving for both her sister and herself, while Ava was off searching for firelizard eggs. As they were in a little cothold outside of Southern Boll, it made perfect sense for them to follow their mother’s and their uncle’s craft. Karai was quite happy to do so, and continued until—
--Until a dragonrider came and pronounced Ava a possible Candidate for the latest clutch on Ista’s Hatching Sands. Karai was about to make a fuss, and explain that Ava couldn’t go without her, when the dragonrider’s Blue looked directly at her, and informed his rider that she would be suitable as well. The sisters consulted, and decided that really, it would be quite exciting to Stand for a Hatching! Of course, they also arrived just a little too late to participate, coming to Ista Weyr just as the Feast had begun.
Pets: None, would probably kill for a firelizard.
Other/Talents: She’s very quick on her feet and can throw a mean punch if needed. She doesn’t hesitate to get herself involved in more ‘boyish’ tasks, as she’s found out she’s no good at things like weaving, cooking, etc.
Will this character be a candidate? Yes.
