It was midnight when Tsuchi crept away from his sleeping family. He kept sneaking back looks to make sure they weren’t stirring. Suzuki moved one, shifting her tail and causing the bells to give a chime. Tsuchi had paused then and held his breath until she fell back into a deep sleep. Once he was outside the temple doors he began to run, a huge grin on his face. He’d be back by morning pretending nothing had happened; but first he was going to spend a night of fun! How exciting to alone in the dark!
It took a number of hours for Tsuchi to realise that he was hopelessly lost, having not inherited his father’s amazing sense of direction. Oh dear.

Buka had managed to nap through most of the day, and as a result he now found that he was uncharacteristically awake at such a late time of night. It was a lot scarier than he had ever thought it would be; he kept thinking he heard things moving in the trees- to keep his mind off it he was attempting to stalk some night time bugs.
So there he was, rustling through the undergrowth on the trail of a lonely cicada trying to picture himself as a brave adventurer, when he heard something decidedly a lot bigger than a cicada moving toward him. His tiny heart began to pound in his chest, and he froze- eyes wide; too frightened of the prospect of a demon to move.

Tsuchi burst through the bushes, came face to face with Buka and gave a blood curdling scream. The young Kuniku, who had begun to panic, was imaging the face of a bloodthirsty demon in his mind. To Tsuchi’s credit, he recovered quickly and realised that his foe was simply a Kuniku like himself. He scrambled around a bit and then pulled himself up, pushing out his chest. “If you’d have been a demon, you would have been frightened by that noise.” When in doubt; act like you know everything. “You’re lucky you’re not though; or I would have trounced you. I’m Tsuchi. Fearless explorer.”

Something burst out of the bushes at Buka, letting out a horrible yell, and in response he screamed at the top of his lungs and fell over onto his back in his haste to get away. Panting, he looked toward his doom- only to see another pup standing there. A little dazed and still shaking he scrambled to his feet.
"Tsuchi...? A fearless explorer? Really?? Wow!" Buka quickly forgot his fear, becoming all too excited instead. An explorer! He'd always played games with himself that he was a brave adventurer, but was always too scared to really stray far from his home village. This Tsuchi sure did seem tough, it sounded like he must have already encountered demons and lived to tell the tale. Buka decided not to take any chances.
He bowed, dipping his wings. He'd seen humans doing this to the more important ones, and it seemed like the right thing to do. "My name's Buka."

“Ah-ah…. Yeah!” Tsuchi puffed himself up even further; covering his surprise that his ploy had worked. Well, he was fearless (sorta) and he was an adventurer (kinda), so he wasn’t really lying. The young Kuniku grinned as Buka gave a bow. He padded forward and touched Buka’s head with a paw, gesturing that he could lift his head. “No need to be so formal. I am a humble yet great and fearless explorer. Good to meet you Buka. Now what are you doing out all alone in the dark?”

Buka grinned and raised himself back up. This Tsuchi sure was a cool guy! He was about to explain that he'd slept all day and now couldn't fall asleep, but then he realised how incredibly lame that was going to make him sound. He thought quickly.
"I'm uh..." He twitched his ears, he had to think of something, getting caught out mid sentence was never fun. "I'm... patrolling for demons, of course!" He smiled, flapping his wings. What a good story he'd thought of!
"That village over there, I guard it." He said proudly, motioning through the trees. A few twinkling lights could be seen in the distance. This lie was at least partially true in Buka's mind, he usually spent his days hanging about the docks and playing a game of guarding them. Sometimes from new humans (although they never seemed to notice his barking) and sometimes from seagulls or crabs.
