It was hot, so hot. Summertime here in southwestern Eurlak was so, so much different than what Caitlin was used to. At her old home, summer was simply a warmer time, just a bit hotter than winter. It was just hot enough to feel good, but cool enough so that you wouldn't sweat or have to go indoors. It was the best time to her; she could play outside as much as she wanted, go ride her father's two horses, and explore the countryside around their little village. Being in the second northernmost country of Eurlak had been so, so wonderful. Even though she was pure Irlin (the same as Irish in our world), she had to admit, the country she'd been born in and grown up in was her home.
But here. Ugh. Everyone was indoors, it was so hot. She actually enjoyed the cold, now, whenever she had the chance. It was so very, very hot. So there she sat, inside the library, reading a book and trying to stay cool before having to go back to her dorm. She'd come here to study, but now that she was done, she was almost trapped by the heat, not wanting to leave. Though she couldn't see him, her daemon--who she was starting to see and speak with even more clearly and easily, and had started to nickname 'Cayne'--was there, below her chair, always with her but not completely visible. Now he was bugging her, trying to get her to go back to her dorm to clean it up.
"Cait, you know you need to go back. Your room is a mess; I can't believe you can find anything in it. You're just procrastinating, and you know it."
"Oh, Cayne." She rolled her eyes for the fiftieth time. "Fine, you win. I'll go back. I'll brave the searing, desert-like heat all for you." With a dramatic movement, she stood up, put the book in her bag, and stepped outside, into the main courtyard, complete with stone fountain.
"Now guess what? You'll have to deal with my cranky overheated self all day. How do you like that?"

The heat was something Constance was more used to, though he hated to admit it.
And he still hated the feel of it.
Summer was something he never looked forward to, especially when it was so hot that the birds roosted in the shadows in a pitiful attempt to escape the sun's rays and the only sounds to be heard was the constant drone of large insects.
He could hardly say he was enjoying this afternoon, but the fountain was nice. He was almost instantly drawn to it and was using it to support most of his weight, keeping off his injured leg. The stone was hot, save for where water splashed it. It was slightly cooler here and he dipped a hand to touch the surface.
His daemon, as always was with him, though she was rarely visible. He could feel her perched at the water's edge, though he could bearly make her out.
A bird form, it seemed? He couldn't quite tell what she was, but he loved her regardless and she made him feel so much better.
"This is much nicer, Connie, definitely. It's so hot outside, today. Maybe you should go in, soon, so you don't get burnt or get too hot."
"Maybe later..." He shielded his eyes as movement caught his attention. A girl was entering the courtyard and he felt, for a brief moment, some pity. She had to be as hot as he was, and it certainly wasn't fun.
"I like the fountain well enough, besides, my leg hurts bad to move it right now."

Moved in? Check. Strewn things about the room haphazardly? She'd done that. Given the room an I'm-accomodating-myself-please-do-not-disturb feel? Done, done, and done. Even shut the door for good measure.
And then, of course, she had left. Because being stuck inside unpacking on a day like today was murder; it was balmier in her room than outside; and besides, she liked the open air. No matter how hot these Eurlakian summers became.
So now Discord strode into the courtyard of Jaradin College, the pencil flicking through her fingers keeping time with her thoughts. She had no real patience with wandering around the Secondary; time enough would be spent for her there. If she was going to get out at all - might as well see how green the grass was over here.
But so far, the grass wasn't proving much greener at all. Just like the campus she'd left, every soul had pulled indoors to escape the sun. Maybe they knew something she didn't.
The pencil found its way into Dis' mouth as she frowned, shading her eyes with the hand that had tossed it. Were those other people across the way? She squinted, just able to make out their moving shapes.
Maybe those indoors knew something she didn't. Or maybe they were just dull.

As she attempted to duck her head to save her eyes, their blue color seemingly making them more sensitive to the light, she failed to notice either the fountain looming up ahead nor the boy who sat on its stone rim. She was only a few feet from it when she heard and felt her daemon's prodding, "Look up, Caitlin," and responded appropriately, easily avoiding a collision.
"I always do that," she muttered to herself of her constant clumsiness. No matter what, she almost always managed to run into something or fall over. Ramming her shoulder into the doorway and continuing to walk. Stubbing her toe on a book. Losing her balance while walking slowly and wobbling as she tried to realign herself. It was always something like that, and there was always an event every day. Just because she had missed this one didn't mean she wouldn't get another opportunity to accidentally hurt herself.
She planned on just passing by the fountain, until she saw the boy sitting there, and how cool the water was. Again Cayne nudged her to go say hello, so she did. Normally she wouldn't have, but she wanted that cool water, and her daemling had given her the idea to. She came and sat about a fourth of the way around; not right next to the boy, but not too far away, either. She stared into the water a bit, until she thought she felt a daemon paw poke her. She looked up at the boy's face, said, "It's really hot today, isn't it," then looked back down at the water, her shyness coming back. As she did, she saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye. It wasn't the typical yellow or brown, or rare gray, of her daemon. It was darker, further away. She glanced up to see another girl coming into the courtyard. Strange, very strange.

Constance was practically grinning ear to ear as soon as he caught sight of the girl that approached him, and bit back the urge to chuckle at her clumsiness. It wouldn't of been polite and it was his daemon's sharp reminder that ultimately spared Caitlin further embarrassment.
At least the newly formed daemon thought so.
Connie, you know it isn't nice to laugh at others. She chided him quietly as she slipped towards him, settling near his good leg. He still couldn't make out a definite form, which bothered him. He wished he could see her as well as some of the other students could their own daemons.
But that would come in time.
"Certainly is, huh?" He replied at ease, almost unaware of the shyness she seemed to have. It wasn't that he couldn't notice, he was merely wrapped up in his own uncertain thoughts and the fountain was so cool in comparison with the summer heat.
"But this spot, it's nice and cool. I like it here, otherwise I'd be right away, inside, where it ain't so hot." He kept his head down slightly, trying to shield his eyes from the brutal glare of the summer sun.
Caitlin was the first to see the figure of the other girl, Constance was too busy watching the fountain's cool water.
