It was one of the warmest days Ista had had in a long time- but that isn't saying much. If Pern had meteorologists, they'd all be in a tizzy! It was pertinent to record the various highs and lows in temperature- but to the Pernese, especially those who lived year-round in Ista's warmth and sun, a few degrees above normal was barely noticeable. Hardly a breeze stirred up the air, no relief from the heat could be found. Unless, that is, you went to the beach!
Closer to the water, it was always cooler. Not by much, but enough that it was preferred to milling in one's weyr. M'zaji certainly found relief down by the water's edge! I told you it would be cooler down here, didn't I? You didn't want to come! But I was right, Kaedrelath boasted as he finally settled down in a sandy wallow. The blue had spent nearly ten minutes pacing, circling, and digging- trying to get down to a cool, moist underlayer of sand. Upon succeeding, he flopped (as gracefully as one can flop) and spread out his wings to absorb the most sunlight. "I know, I know," M'zaji muttered, though in good humor and spirits. His bright, friendly eyes danced merrily.
"So, do you think we'll find any eggs today?" a young, dark-skinned girl asked the bluerider. Kella had managed to obtain a day free from chores, and when one of her oldest friends had asked her to accompany him to the beach, she couldn't refuse! Stripped down to a dark-green bikini top and mid-thigh length khaki shorts, Kella was managing quite nicely in the heat. The girl was ready to hunt for firelizard clutches! That was her ulterior motive for coming to the beach. She enjoyed M'zaji's company, for sure- but the recent rumors of a wild gold's clutch, hidden somewhere on the stretch of beach by Ista, was impossible to ignore!
M'zaji laughed, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't know, girl. We'll certainly try to find it!" He promised her, a grin across his face. Both the bluerider and the kitchen-working girl were firelizard-less, and more-than-eager to find one of the companions for themselves, perhaps moreso Kella than M'zaji. Not to mention, with all the stress and troubles at the Weyr as of late, a nice, relaxing day at the beach would do them good!

Aabsinral had been wandering aimlessly, as he so enjoyed doing, with the slightest intent of avoiding the chaos of the Weyr. He had only arrived the day before, and there were always people, everywhere. Usually, people watching was as fine a pass time as he could hope for, but between the crowding and the heat- he had no realized how much warmer Ista's little Island would be than Keroon- the baker and freshly arrived candidate had found himself almost swooning. Later, in the evening, perhaps he would go and see the lower caverns again, and make up for his absence today by doing all the peeling that the intense woman who led the kitchens could set before him.
He smiled wanly. He liked peeling. It was good, tedious work that filled the hands but left the mind free to wander. it kept him looking busy, even though he was really daydreaming. Just so long as he didn't slice through his thumb again... But, that hadn't happened in months now.
Eventually, the hard dirt under his feet softened, turning into sand, and he realized he could hear waves. Oh, how lovely! He hadn't been to the beachside in a very long time! He turned his eyes onto his clothes, pleased that the thin fabric of his shirt and trousers would lend itself well to swimming. If it was this hot out, perhaps the water would be warm, instead of mind numbingly cold. Aabsinral hated the cold, with a passion that was rarely offered on any other subject.
As he traipsed through the sand, eyes wandering, he caught sight of a pair of humans and a lovely blue dragon. This was his lucky day indeed! Even though the great blue beast was no wheeling about in the air- instead half buried in the sand- he had a gorgeous sheen to his hide. In no rush, Abi made his way over to these people he had never before met, putting on his best smile- a soft, fuzzy thing that never did seem to impress people. Perhaps, one day, if he ever built up a sense of duty or will power, he'd work on that.
"Hello, my fellow beachgoers! It is a fine day for the sea, I think. Too hot back with all the people everywhere. I am glad to see there are others who agree with me!" He finally said, by way of greeting. After a moment's pause, it occurred to him that these strangers- friends soon, he hoped- might want his name. "I am apprentice baker Aabsinral of Keroon... Though I suppose now I'm..." he pause once more, thinking of an introduction to reflect his newly changed status, "A candidate of Ista? Regardless, I believe you should call me Abi. My name is awful to try and wrap your tongue around."

Luckily for Kella, she had no hair. Or rather, it was kept closely-cropped. If it had been longer, her naturally-grown curls would be sticking to her neck and face! But lacking thick, heavy hair, the dark-skinned girl had barely a sheen of sweat on her! M'zaji had shed his clothes in favor of only breeches, rolled up to mid-calf so they wouldn't get too wet if they waded in the shallows. The pair of Istans were slowly scouring the shore, looking for any obvious signs of firelizards or clutches. Large mounds of sand, rings of seaweed and shells, shards of old eggs- or even, firelizards themselves! Kella sighed after maybe ten or fifteen minutes of searching. The young woman was easily discouraged. "Look at all this beach," she waved a hand in front of her to indicate the stretch of white sand that went right up into the horizon. "Do you really think we'll ever find that clutch?" She asked, scowling darkly and kicking at a small piece of driftwood.
You give up hope too easily, girl, Kaedrelath remarked admonishingly from his wallow, his voice reaching out to wrap itself around Kella's mind in a rush of thundering rapids, the white-frothy water cold and shocking. Her eyes widened and mouth fell slightly agape. Kaedrelath rarely spoke to her, but when he did, she was caught offguard. Every time! M'zaji recognized the look on his companion's face, as well as heard Kaedrelath's words. He couldn't help but chuckle. Kella turned to glare at the bluerider, her little nose wrinkling in displeasure. She didn't like being laughed at.
Both M'zaji and Kella's attention was snatched away by a voice, a newcomer to the beach. The tall, willowy youth was foreign to both of them. Kella glanced at M'zaji, but the bluerider looked as surprised as she. M'zaji was the first to recover, and the first to repsond though. "Afternoon, Aabsinral!" The boy's tongue was not easy on the tongue, that was for sure. M'zaji was grateful when Aabsinral went on to say he preferred 'Abi'. "Abi, it is nice to meet you. I'm M'zaji, that's my blue, Kaedrelath-" and the blue warbled his own greeting, lifting his head up to glance at the trio of humans briefly. But, as they lacked anything to retain his interest, Kaedrelath settled his head back on his crossed forepaws to nap. Kella remained quiet, her eyes narrowed as she looked Abi up and down. For one so short and small, Kella was quite imposing. M'zaji, however, would not tolerate her rudeness by lack on introduction. "This is Kella," he began, but was bitten off by the fiesty, dark-skinned girl. "I can introduce myself, thankyouverymuch," she scolded the bluerider, crossing her arms over her chest. "Kella. I'm a candidate, too, and I work in the kitchens," she said, a hint of warning in her voice. Vaguely, Kella wondered if Aabsinral knew of all the turmoil within Ista Weyr. But, she waved it away. He was new. He couldn't have stumbled upon all the bickering factions, not just yet.
M'zaji rolled his eyes at Kella, tempted to cuff the girl upside her head- but that would only make things worse. Kella wasn't one to take scolding well. So, the bluerider left her alone. The candidate stood, all her weight thrown into one hip with her arms still crossed over her chest, eyeing Aabsinral like he was some sort of intruder. M'zaji frowned at his companion. What was wrong with her? Sighing, the bluerider tried to lighten the mood and make things less awkward. "So! Abi, how're you liking Ista Weyr so far? Where did you say you were originally from? Keroon?" M'zaji set up a few questions, aiming to get conversation flowing. As well as start conversation, the bluerider wanted to get back to scouring the beach; Kella had already turned away and begun strolling up the beach, scanning up and down the shore before her.

Aabsinral offered the dragon a deep bow, seeming for a moment that he would tip over, but rather than catching himself, he simply straightened back out slowly, and listened intently to the rest of the introductions.
Abi offered the fiesty girl a wider smile when she mentioned the kitchens. No doubt, they'd see much more of eachother then. Though he'd only known her for a handful of moments, Abi was certain already that this girl was almost exactly like his sister. Short, dark, and absolutely the most dominant personality in the room, unless she chose otherwise. He would enjoy seeing her more. Clearly, Miss Kella wasn't fond of his sudden intrusion into the little bubble of private beach the two had created, but Aabsinral had never been accused of reacting to subtle hints, not even once.
"It is lovely, so full of plants and greens. People were always mentioning how lush the edges of Keroon could be, but it is nothing like this place! Of course, it seems to me that there are more people here than there were at home, as well. Or at least, the same number, but in a much smaller space. It is no wonder that the air is so hot, filled with so much breathing!" He laughed airily at what he'd decided was a wonderful joke, but it faded quickly, like so much.
"Of course, I have only been here less than a proper day. I cannot really say anything for certain. I do, however, hope to work in the kitchens as well, Miss..." He paused, seeking out the name once more. He'd only heard it moments ago, hadn't he? "Kella. So, I hope we will work well together!"
He finally made the connection, after another moment's breath, that the pair had been looking in the sands for something, rather than just milling about idly, studying the oceanside. What they were seeking, he was not sure, but interrupting their hunt was probably what had the girl so annoyed. Or was she always like that, harsh and easily tipped into fire? He would enjoy finding out! "Have you lost something?"

The bluerider hooked his thumbs into his pockets and set the pace, slow and meandering. He wasn't in any sort of rush, despite the fact Kella was acting otherwise. The girl was already several paces ahead of M'zaji and Abi, eagerly scouring the beach around her. It was like she was a hunting dog, with a keen nose that had picked up the scent trail left by game. The bluerider laughed easily, his warm, hazel eyes bobbing back and forth between Kella and Abi. "Oh, Ista's very lush, that's for sure," he agreed readily, gaze darting to the tropical forest that crept up against the beach. The tall trees leaned out over the sand, seemingly eager to claim the land up against the ocean.
M'zaji's mood darkened as Abi mentioned the overcrowding, a frown tainting the smile that had been prevalent across his face only moments before. "Ista Weyr has... its fair share of inhabitants, yes. We have an overcrowding problem, as does the rest of Pern," to that, M'zaji agreed quickly. "Our weyrs are often shared between two or three riders and their dragons. The weyrling and candidate barracks are overflowing. Food is scarce, as are other supplies- and underground factions are working to both worsen and improve the conditions." He shook his head sadly. M'zaji was ashamed that it had come to this, Istan against Istan.
Kella paused and allowed the bluerider and candidate to catch up to her. She caught the last snippet of M'zaji's conversation and nearly snarled, her dark eyes hardening into a glare. "Its Helirra's fault, the daft woman. She should have initiated a move into a new weyr TURNS ago!" Kella's tiny hands curled into fists, as if she were ready to pummel the Werywoman's face. "But she's too wrapped up in trying to make things work here," Kella's voice turned mocking and acerbic. "There's no way we can make things work here, there are too many people!" It was now that she turned her glare to Abi, as if his arrival were the proverbial straw to break the camel's back.
"Kella!" M'zaji reprimanded his young friend, eyes wide in astonishment in her berating of the Werywoman. "There are many factors, and Helirra has certainly tried her best-" Kella snorted and rolled her eyes. "He's off in la-la land. I don't think he knows whats really going on," Kella remarked to Abi, jerking a thumb at the bluerider while she shook her head dejectedly. To Abi's comment about hoping they'd work together in the kitchens, Kella remained speechless. The dark-skinned girl didn't work, or play, well with others. She laughed at his next question, though, her rosebud lips parting to emit a merry, lilting giggle. "Have we lost something? Oh, no. Not really," she said, waving her hand to dismiss that notion. She turned her glittering, dark eyes onto Abi, meeting his gaze while a mischevious smile touched the corners of her lips. "There's been talk- of a wild gold's clutch. Out here! On our beach! We're going to find it," she informed the newly-arrived baker/candidate confidently.

((Jumping in. Hope you don't mind.))
I do not know why we are here. Astarteth grumbled. She was just settling down for a nice nap in the sun when Kallista had woken her up talking about a naming day present for her youngest clutch mate. Who would want a noisy little creature like that is beyond me.
Kallista chuckled as Astarteth came down for a landing. She saw a blue rider and two others that she had not seen before. Apparently whispers and rumors about a wild gold's clutch had not gone unheard by ears at all levels. Waiting until her lovely green had settled on the sands, she slid down and tossed her riding jacket onto a nearby rock. Kallista wore a sleeveless shirt and leather pants rolled up along with a pair of sandals.
She most certainly did not want to get a thorn in her foot!
"Lo there, blue rider! I am Kallista, Astarteth's rider! And good day to you folks as well. Do not mind me, I am in search of a present for my youngest brother's naming day!" This was probably the most outgoing she had ever been since coming to Ista.
Astarteth looked over at the blue and bobbed her head in greeting. I am Astarteth. A pleasure I am sure to be stuck on the sands while they search for some silly egg.

Valad slowed his runner beast. The sand shifted under the huge blues big feet. Valad slid off the shimmering dragon and looked over a sand mound. 'Dragons! Good I found the proper beach.' He thought as he slid off the dragons forleg. He lifted his hand at the dragon rider before having to shade his eyes from a blast of sand. Watching the great sea blue dragon glide off he smiled. He wondered what it would feel to be the one guiding the dragon. Turning he grabbed his water and carry bags, Valad had caught wind of the beach trip the other day, and had stayed up all though the night oiling harnesses and leathers, so he would have today off.
He laughed aloud at the look the leather master had given him when he walked in on Valad setting the last set of traces aside. The hidebound old man had tried for half a mark to find fault with Valad's work, but had to finally admit defeat. Valad trotted up a sand mound to slow to a walk. It wouldnt do to tire out before some play in the sea, and a flit search.
"Hey! No luck Yet?" He asked with a wide smile on his face, as he spotted a few dragons and other people not too far away, he didnt know names, but he figured being bold would get him introduced one way or another.
Walking to a shaded area he paused. With deft hands he stripped from the pants he was wearing over a pair of short leggings that ended at his knees, and his shirt also found itself tied and set aside on a large wind worn rock. He kept his shoes on for now, but planned on removing them to go to the water.
Finnished he grabbed his water bag and a light leather bag and tossed them over his shouder. Walking back to the dragons and there riders, he smiled at the people already at the beach. "Good day! Im Valad!" He said in a huskey playful voice.

Aabsinral's voice sounded as though it ought to be accompanied by a deeply furrowed brow, but his face remained as blank as it ever was. "To make things...worse? That seems a bit silly, though. What good would come of it, exactly? ...But, I think I understand what you mean, miss Kella, about there needing to be a new Weyr, if dragons and riders are sleeping so tightly mashed together. Where would it go, though? It seems like such an undertaking. I am terribly glad I do not have be involved in it very much." Aabsinral laughed his usual airy giggle. "I think I would much rather traipse along the sand and help you search for your clutch! Perhpas, I shall even be allowed to keep one for myself..." His voice trailed off, reflecting the way he was unsure about taking an egg, if they found them. He had never been very good with animals, unless he was butchering and cooking them.
Abi was not certain he could handle having a little flitting fire lizard of his own, but he'd heard enough about them to know that if you didn't feed them or oil them or bathe them often enough, they would let you know. Directly into your mind, no less, like a teeny tiny dragon! If there was anything he could keep without killing or accidentally neglecting, it would be a tiny flying creature that could almost talk.
And then, there appeared a veritable crowd, at least by the standards of the oh so empty beach. Two new people, and a green dragon. If miss Kella had disliked having one person sitting in on her hunt, she would certainly dislike the abrupt addition of two more. And they even knew about the eggs!
The green dragon was lovely, such a pretty hide, almost glowing in the deep green tones of the plantlife that filled Ista's little island, and those lovely cheeks. He decided abruptly that he liked her appearance much more than the blue's, though the larger one was still gorgeous in his own right. All dragons were, really. Just as he had for Kaedrelath, Aabsinral gave a seemingly off-balance bow, managing to stay upright even though he seemed too far forward.
"It is nice to meet you, Astarteth, Kallista, and Valad! I am Aabsinral, but you must call me Abi unless you want to hurt your throat." He smiled, carefully avoiding eye contact with the green's rider. He'd heard of a green and her rider in this Weyr with the most fantastically mean disposition- or at least the dragon- but the names escaped him. Probably not these two, but it couldn't hurt to be docile, just in case.
"But no, we haven't found any yet, though I have to say, I've been more concerned with introductions than looking around..." As an after thought, Abi actually scanned the sands around him, but nothing seemed particularly out of place. Just the usual dune-lumps and bits of shell and rock from the waves.

“Skrraaaw!” The golden firelizard hissed at the incoming wave, determined to intimidate the water’s edge into backing down. She flared her wings at it before screeching again, this time more loudly. When Pyrite had decided to accompany C’ren and Ceylith to the beach, she had imagined lots of golden shores. She hadn’t thought about this… this wet stuff and oh Faranth it was coming back again!! “Skrrawwwp!”
Once the waves receded again, she relaxed slightly, neatly settling her wings back. There! Now the waves knew their place only they were coming back again! Highly irate now, Pyrite dove at the waves, expecting them to retreat from her fury.
Instead, she merely ended up cold and wet. “Skreeeee!” she screeched and fluttered back to the shore, shivering miserably and glaring at the water’s edge. Didn’t that wet stuff know how to treat a golden lady such as herself?! Well, she would teach it…
Meanwhile, C’ren and Ceylith were merely amused. Or, correction: C’ren was amused. The Green dragon was merely worried. Mine, she’s screeching again. Is she hurt? Did something in the water attack her? Should we go back to the Weyr? Oh… I hope she’s alright… the dragon had been fussing over just about everything since the Hatching.
C’ren couldn’t blame her, really. That was why he had decided a day at the beach was just what the pair needed. F’sey was busy with his weyrlings, which meant the younger Greenrider was on his own for much of the day. And poor Ceylith… she was so distressed after that tragedy… C’ren sighed and went back to watching little Pyrite play in the waves, reassuring the Green that, yes, Pyrite was perfectly fine.
She was just annoying.

'What is that noise...ooh, I thought fire lizards would be a bit smarter.' 'Rish smiled watching the little gold flit either play or attempt attacking the waves. 'Still rather cute, in an annoying skreee, skreee way…wish she stop though. The sound is just familiar to the cries of that little blue.’
‘Rish walked slowly towards the rather lovely green and her rider, a rather thin blond man who just screamed bookish, neat, and just go away because your probably an annoyance I don’t want to deal with vibes. ‘Him and Rom would likely get along just fine. Considering how my cousin has to plan every step of fun out of everything.’
“Do you think she’ll stop the screeching for a shellfish or two?” He question, hefting up pail that clinked slightly with the few creatures he retrieved earlier planning to collect enough for a meal. So far it had been a bust; he had found a few small ones not enough for a decent snack let alone a lunch or dinner. Not flit eggs either. His pants had enough clinging wet and dry sand clinging to them to testify that point.

Aabsinral wondered, as he was prone to doing after an unexpected noise, if he should have flinched. People always seemed to flinch when something loud and surprising happened. Apparently, it was reflexive? He had yet to experience it, but he looked forward to the day when it would happen.
As it was, though, he simply cast his eyes up from the sand he'd been so studiously looking at, to catch sight of one of the little tiny lizards they were looking for! She seemed to be terribly distraught, perhaps a mother trying to fight something off from her clutch? But, that seemed terribly unlikely, considering the little golden one was flanked by two more people and yet another lovely green. This one was sort of blue on the belly, and Abi had to admit, he liked that. Not as much as Astarteth's bright skin, but still. All these dragons everywhere were going to have him melting in glee at some point, he was absolutely certain.
However, melting could wait, for there were new introductions to be had. At least, if he wanted to walk all the way back down to where they were. It wasn't very far, a handful of dragonlengths at best, but Aabsinral was inclined to stay with his own little group, and perhaps try to memorize the fistful of names he'd already gathered.
Still... Such a lovely little golden creature, and another dragon. It would be disrespectful if he didn't at least acknowledge them, wouldn't it? He knew better than to try to yell, his voice wasn't strong enough to carry over crashing waves and whistling breezes, to he did make himself as tall as he could manage, standing on his toes as the sand slipped around them, and waved as widely as he could without risking hitting anyone.
He'd leave the yelling and greeting to someone with a stronger set of lungs.

Astarteth preened happily. Of course, she always preened with someone paid attention to her. And there were many approaching to make her feel pretty. The green waded into the warm waters to at least enjoy a swim. Kallista! I think Ceylith and her rider are here!
Kallista looked around and saw the green off in the distance. How long had it been since she seen C'ren. She was tempted to leave the group and go start a conversation with him but manners kept her from leaving. She gave Abi a funny look when he didn't quite meet her eyes but she shrugged it off. "Greetings Abi, Valad. Pleasure to meet you both."
With so many people gathering, the wild flits would be hiding. Maybe they should go off in groups or by themselves. Kallista sighed to herself. She would love to get a flit for her brother, sometimes she missed her family so much. But not as much as she loved her Astarteth.
Right now, I love swimming. So do not go anywhere for a while. Astarteth replied.

Kagiya was thrilled to be out, playing in the sand. ... Kagiya was not alone. Still, her caretaker was out of sight, giving the little girl just enough time to come face to face with the fabled wild gold. "Oooooh!" Pretty, pretty firelizard. But mommy had said that firelizards couldn't be caught, so she didn't try to catch her. Sitting quiet quiet on the sand, she observed the shrieking flit, oblivious to the fact that the queen had an owner. Why would she know, after all? She was only a seven Turn old girl, who had never seen a gold firelizard up close before. Pyrite would probably not appreciate the adoring attention-- or maybe she would, all things considered-- but Giya couldn't quite help but give it. Would the firelizard queen have a clutch hidden nearby? Curiously, she watched, and waited... silent, and still.

C’ren was careful to keep a distance between himself and Pyrite; as much as the gold liked to believe otherwise, she was not keeping the waves away and the Greenrider didn’t want to ruin his nice new boots with salt water. And Pyrite just needed some time outside. The Hatching had hit her nearly as hard as Ceylith, although for slightly different reasons. Ceylith just felt grief at never knowing who had died, at the loss of such young life. Pyrite was just…
Well… Pyrite.
“I doubt if. From what I’ve seen, she doesn’t stop screeching for much,” C’ren said, eyeing the unknown boy. Another Candidate, no doubt, but not one of his.
The gold firelizard clamped up at ‘Rish’s approach and glared at the boy. She didn’t like him! Of course, she didn’t like most people until they had provided her with the proper baseline coddling she felt she deserved by mere virtue of existing. She hopped a few steps back and flared her wings again, trying to make herself look bigger. But, the waves distracted her quickly enough, sending her into another charge at them.
Kagiya got a moment of the queen’s attention as well. Now this one she liked, if only because she was paying her the proper respect. Pyrite fluttered her wings slightly and tried to make herself look at least a little presentable. “Skrraw,” she said daintily, or about as daintily as she could.
If you say she’s alright, Mine… Ceylith said, her voice heavy with doubt. But, a familiar figure had caught her eye. Oh! Mine, it’s Astarteth and Hers! C’ren, we must say hello to them! Hello, Astarteth! How are you and Yours today?

At least the little beast was quite for a moment. ‘Rish nodded to her owner, surely if the flit was a wild creature she would have long since fled. He glanced back at the lizard and snorted, raising an eyebrow as gold hopped back a few spaces and flared her wings. ‘Defensive behavior, which means she doesn’t like me. I think…’ He wasn’t going to approach and find out. Flits had quite sharp teeth.
‘Which means with so many people here…any hope of tracking a nest by catching a glimpse of a wild flit is nil.’ ‘Rish sighed, flopping down and stretching out his sandal feet. He looked up at C’ren. “Full name is Brishen, but please call me ‘Rish. Anyone who says my full name makes me look around to see what I did wrong.” He didn’t ask for C’ren or the lovely greens name. If he cared to reply it was up to him. Till he did or something else happened, ‘Rish was going to rethink his ideas.
