As usual, this is probably a repeat topic but I'm typing it anyway. I’ve just read some rather awful examples and feel like a bit of a rant.

Ellipses; a much-tortured device.

Ellipses. We’ve all used them at some point, whether to convey the trailing off of conversation or to show pause. Thing is, a hell of a lot of people get them wrong; in fact, so many people get them wrong I’m beginning to wonder what the hell people are being taught these days.

First of all, ellipses are THREE dots. THREE. How hard can it be? It doesn’t matter how long a pause you're trying to convey, ellipses still equal three dots, not two, five or forty-seven. Three dots or nothing, my friends, and to be honest in a lot of cases the second option is better.

no.
“So..............” he looked round awkwardly.....waiting for a reply.......

yes.
“So…” he looked round awkwardly, waiting for a reply.

Seriously, though, people in general cannot bend the rules of punctuation like this. Chatting idly with a friend (and somehow ending up on the subject) resulted in the retort ‘it helps to convey the longer pause’. No it doesn’t. It makes your piece look as though it was written by a four year old with little grammatical skill.

Second; ellipses, however attractive they may seem, should not be used instead of every other form of punctuation. Again, the ‘it helps to convey a longer pause’ argument may apply here, but it still looks absolutely crap. Ellipse fetish is a common occurrence, but that doesn’t make it RIGHT.

Please stop abusing the ellipse, various WF users.
(disclaimer: does not apply to any forum users who can punctuate.)

Actually there is a lawful way to use four dots. It's when you put an ellipsis just before a period. Like so:

And that was that . . ..

After that, some other stuff happened.

The ellipsis should also be period/space/period/space/period

. . .
not
...

But most people ignore that rule too.

Where I come from, people abuse ellipses in regular conversation. it isn't just limited to RP posts. Sometimes they just do it to stretch the page needlessly.

That's a much abridged version but yes. Ten times the periods, double or triple the emotes, and half the words.

Well I just learned something. The period followed by a space I did not know. But most people, actually a good 65% at least do not use it that way, even in 'normal' writing. I know I don't and a good majority of the stories I have read didn't have it that way. Maybe I missed it but the point is I've never seen it that way before. So thank you for the correct version 1wolffan. Even those that are 'experienced' still have things to learn.

Well it's one of those things that they teach everyone in college. But no one really follows it. But if you don't do the spaces on the English papers with the professor I had, you'd get a few red pen marks. I don't use it anymore either. Word is set up to make the conversion for me.

Truth be told I don't recall being taught anything about the uses of Ellipses. The only time I have seen the issue of it addressed was in the book 'Automated Alice'.

I do not think that I abuse it but I am an avid user of it. ... and () are like my best friends.

Though one time I did see it heavily abused and asked the writer if she were trying to relay Morse Code to me.

If you want to get really technical about it ... is actually uses to show you've removed something from a quote. Three periods is a sentence or under, and four is technically over a sentence, but in dialog in roleplays you are completely right. Three dots, no more, no less.

Also I got mad at someone a friend of mine is RPing with and decided to go through and make a billion edits to his post. I don't know how many times I had to type the words Not Ellipses in red font. (can show if you want)
