Katie and Thane had what most people would term an understanding, but to Katie it was simply her life. Where most parents of children Katie's tender age might have hovered protectively, Thane took a more understanding approach. "Do those things you feel ready to try, and I will be there if you need me." He was as good as his world. If Katie wanted to experiment in the kitchen or go for a walk in the woods she was allowed. Thane kept a respectful distance and encouraged her to try new things. He only stepped in when she needed him or he perceived some form of danger. On the other hand, if Katie wanted to spend all day in Thane's company listening to him tell stories, he was happy to oblige her. He seemed not to begrudge Katie anything.

Which was why, on this particular day, Katie found herself heading off for a walk into unfamiliar territory. She had no particular reason to go there. It was simply an area she had not walked through before. She rather liked walking around and getting a feel for new places, figuring out how to get from point A to point B and trying to see if she could still find her way back home after she had turned every which way imaginable. Thane trailed a highly respectful distance behind her, ready to swoop in at the first sign of trouble, but otherwise disengaged from Katie's adventure.

It was a really lovely day for a walk, too, thought Katie, feeling the warmth of the sun on her cheeks as she made her way up over hills and through rocky terrain. The cliffs in this area somewhat dictated her route, but she still had plenty of freedom to choose her direction. She alternated between skipping and walking, humming lightly to herself as she went. Since it was Sunday and all her homework was done, she had the whole day to spend just walking around, and that was exactly how Katie intended to spend it. She had everything she needed to realize her goal. The knapsack slung across her shoulder contained a leather canteen of water, a little first aid kit, and a pair of jam and cheese sandwiches.

What she had not counted on was that this seemingly deserted countryside would turn up, of all things, a house.

As surprised as Katie was to see a house ahead, she was more curious than cautious. Houses stuck out in the middle of nowhere were nothing new to her. Her own cottage sat at the edge of an empty valley that stretched for miles into big, rocky mountains. Besides, if Thane's guidance had taught her anything, it was that she only ever needed ask one question of herself and the universe: Why not? So, adjusting the strap of her knapsack, she set across the hilly grass towards this unfamiliar structure to find out what was there.

Celsior had never felt so degraded. Sure, he was a rat, but he liked to believe he withheld some sort of dignity! Dignity enough that he shouldn't have to be settled with baby-sitting duty, of all things. Milton was truly testing their friendship, asking him to do this.

Well, it wasn't really quite so bad. All he needed to do was keep an eye on the golem as the baby tumbled about in the grass in front of his home, and go contact Milton if there was trouble. The Patch child had grown into the form of a toddler now, and was somewhat formidable if Celsior didn't pay attention to him. Often enough the rat would find himself scooped up into a strong and affectionate embrace, scrabbling to escape the lopsided grin of Adam. It was all well and fine that the child was so eager to make friends, but Celsior was nothing if not aloof. And he did not wish to be coddled.

Currently Adam was laying back in the grass, taking a break from his exploration of the yard. The sun warmed his form, the heat something he could easily experience unlike the blades of grass tickling his skin. He looked like no more than a small mound of dirt with clothes piled upon it.
