Rivener had seen this place on the back page of the newspaper Aphismet was reading that morning. Abandoned Waterpark Slated for Demolition, the headline was announcing. Those words were not what had attracted Rivener's attention though: it was the large picture.
Old cracked slides. A half-empty wave pool whose water was murky and disgusting. A long winding canal once meant as a lazy-river type of ride, now empty and overgrown with moss and debris. Broken lawn chairs piled up and tipped over on the fake-grass carpeted grounds. It was beautiful. For some reason Rivener's artistic side kicked in full force that morning and yelled at him that he MUST go there and take pictures! He had to immortalize this place for posterity before it got destroyed! He had to remember how a place once so full of happiness and life was now dead and rotting, soon to die. And today was a perfect day for it, with the heavy, black clouds hanging low on the horizon...
The Scorpion gulped down the rest of his breakfast, rushed upstairs for his camera, and zoomed out the front door with only a small warning in passing to his guardian: "I'm going out!"
The Scorpion's enthusiasm hadn't dimmed even throughout the hours it took to find the place, stowed away in the back streets of Durem. The front doors which should normally be closed were now open, left that way in preparation for the demolition crew that would be coming tomorrow. Grinning, Rivener stepped inside.
It was even more beautiful in person! A grotesque, ugly beauty. Riv sighed happily and lifted his camera, looking through his LCD screen and snapping picture after picture, the flash lighting up the area like small bolts of lightning. Riv would fill up his entire memory card today!

"Bored."
"Yes Vars. I know you're bored," Kinsey replied, not even looking up from her small desk. Ford glanced up and barked, helpfully wagging his tail as he wandered over to the unamused Frei. Varun sniffed and tilted his chin up, not nearly desperate enough to even think about giving the dog a scritch behind the ears. His Kinsey certainly wasn't helping, either. She had been scribbling words he didn't know on boring paper he didn't really care about for over an hour now.
"Whatfor?" he demanded, motioning towards the stupid paper in question.
"Work."
Varun rolled his eyes and brushed his hair away from his face. Such a simple answer was an insult to his intelligence. "Whatfor?" he pressed, floating a little closer as he tried to make sense of the characters Kinsey seemed so infatuated with.
"Work. Wanna get done early. I'm going to-" The young police officer stopped talking when she heard the telltale swoosh of Varun's wings snapping open. She sighed and glanced up, rubbing a hand over the three rubies beneath her right eye as she gave her charge a once over. "You want to go out, Vars?"
The seasonal Raevan brightened considerably, wings quivering as they began to return to the center of his back. Of course he wanted to go out! Why did she think he'd been asking pointless questions since they'd gotten here? Certainly not because she might imagine he cared about her meaningless job in this dismal place. "Yes." Varun held out his hand.
Kinsey rolled her eyes, but fished out a few fives anyways and handed them over. "Try not to spend it all in the same place," she muttered. "You remember the-"
"Rules. Yes. Stupid. No stranger. No stealing, use Kinsey's. Come back if rain." He rolled his eyes. He always went to the park, which Kinsey could see. There wasn't a problem here. She nodded and motioned to the door, and off the Raevan went, except today, there would be a problem with the previously flawless plan. He'd seen a photo in a newspaper and while he could only make out a few of the words, Kinsey had explained it to him. Varun wanted to witness this 'demolition'. It sounded exciting. Meaningful. Beautiful.
It took him another hour or so to get there. As it turned out, the word "demolition" was one must strangers understood, and they had been very helpful in pointing the way. Not that Kinsey needed to know. He just wanted a quick peek, and then he'd-
What was this?
Headfins and wings flared. "Rivener?"

Rivener had already taken two dozen pictures. The way the clouds framed everything was perfect, a dark and dreary backdrop for all the cracked cement and weed-covered things... This place was amazing! The Scorpion couldn't get enough! He'd only taken pictures of the messy lawnchairs so far, he still had the canals, the wave pool, and the slides to go! He'd find some really interesting things, and hell, maybe some of his amateur photography might end up looking... professional? Grinning, prematurely proud of himself, the Scorpion stood a little taller and rustled his wings, pressing the shutter one more time.
A flash, and then a voice?
Rivener turned towards the sound of his own name, finding it familiar but not placing it right away... A splash of bright sunset colors amidst the gray and flat tones around them stood out starkly, and Rivener's face brightened into recognition. "Ah, Varun!" he said, lowering the camera for an instant. A quick scan of the immediate area showed that the Frei was alone. "...What are you doing here? Where's your guardian?"
Riv came closer, tilting his head as an idea struck him. Well, not su much an idea, but... There was something about it; that splash of color in the gray. It was amazing. Like Varun was the entirety of life made flesh in this place... If Riv could get the fin-flared Raevan to agree to be his model for a few pictures, the Scorpion was SURE he could make something amazing.
But before he could ask for anything, he had to find out what the Frei was doing here, and how he felt about getting his picture taken...

Varun tipped his head, breifly trying to figure out what the older Raevan was holding before responding. "Work," he replied shortly, wrinkling his nose with obvious distaste. "Work always. Whatfor? 'Need money, Varun! You much cost!'" The Leviathan shook his head. Money was such a strange concept; why couldn't he just take what he wanted? Everyone always let him, even if he had to glare a little bit. "Work? Boring."
Varun nodded sagely and floated closer to the Sigel, still inspecting the odd gadget he was holding. He didn't recognize it at all. It was very strange looking, with one eye, but it didn't seem like it was still alive. Was it dead? The redhead wrinkled his nose. Why was Rivener playing with dead things? "Demolition, yes? Rivener too?" The Raevan asked, lapsing back into his unique speech pattern as he made idle conversation. He knew how to speak better, but he didn't seem find the need when he wasn't with females.
He paused before motioning to the dead thing in Rivener's hand. "Whatfor one-eye death?" he asked curiously, brushing a few strands of hair behind his ear as he leaned down to get a closer look.

Riv smirked. Varun had a way of talking that still reminded the Scorpion of Roux. It had been a while that Rivener had first met Varun, and his speech pattern hadn't yet... Charming, really.
Ah, Kinsey was working. And she allowed Varun out on his own? He was rather young for such a thing, but for some reason Rivener found this event less worrisome than the same regarding Xiu. Perhaps it was because Varun looked like he could (and very much WOULD) defend himself if he was in trouble... Rivener found he didn't need to worry about this one's safety, and so just let the situation slide. Once again he was struck by the strange thought Since when have I made myself the Raevan Police??
"Well, humans work. To buy human things. You don't have to worry about that," Riv counseled. He lifted his camera again, peeking through the LCD screen to check something... Ah, yes, so pretty! That splash of red and oranges... hm, how to bring it up...
The Scorpion's red eyes all but lit on fire as Varun suddenly breached the topics himself, bringing up not only the demolition but the camera as well. Riv grinned widely, flapping his wings once excitedly, looking rather determined. "Yes, I came because of the demolition. They're only going to demolish tomorrow, but this place looked so old and wonderful that I wanted to take pictures of it before it got destroyed. That's what this is for." Riv lifted the camera. "It's called a camera! It takes pictures, like the ones on the newspaper where you saw about the demolition. See?"
Floating over so the sunset Frei could see the LCD screen, Rivener cycled slowly through a few photos of the place he'd taken. "I'd like to take YOUR picture, too, Varun, if it's okay? You would look very handsome in this place; you're so colorful and bright and strong, and it will be so contrary to everything else around you here. It'll make a very pretty bunch of pictures! Is it okay?" Ruby eyes fixated on Varun's green, the Scorpion nearly willing the other to say yes.

Tomorrow? How disappointing!
Varun had been looking forward to seeing some of this fabled demolition, it sounded incredibly exciting. Of course, he could never ask Kinsey to bring him back here. He highly doubted his woman would approve of this adventure in the first place (he said he was going to the park, after all), asking to return would be like turning himself in. He was definitely not that stupid. Unable to help his discontentment, the redhead scowled getting himself ready to huff and puff about human's poor timing when Rivener began to explain the one-eyed death.
The Leviathan was very wary about the strange creature Rivener was attempting to share with him, but he steeled his resolve. The young Frei was visibly stiff, but looked down at Rivener's pictures all the same. He let out a sigh of relief, wings quivering slightly, and he watched the cycle fixedly. Those were just like from the magazines the older Raevan had shown him the first time they had met. It came from one-eyed death? Or, what did Rivener just call it? Camera? Oh, but he was flattering Varun.
Running a hand through his hair, Varun started to preen. Just a little. What would Prajna say, if he heard all these compliments Rivener was laying on him? While not naturally a very vain being, Varun was certain to remember these things so he could brag to Prajna the next time he saw the fiery redhead.
"Pictures? Varun? Like magazine." The Frei nodded. He didn't see why not. He was very handsome, all bright and lively in this very dreary place. "Varun, whatfor do?"

Rivener's wings flared a bit in triumph even before Varun spoke. He could see the preening, the fluffing of the hair, the puffing out of that milti-colored chest. Varun was liking the idea, felt proud, and so he'd say yes! When the sunset Frei actually gave his verbal permission, asking what it was that he should be doing, Rivener grinned like a lion who'd just caught an antelope.
"Great, Varun! It's really easy, you just need to come stand where I tell you, and look where I tell you, okay? Then I'll take a few pictures, and then we'll move to another spot and do it again! Let's try it one time, so you can see what it's like. If you don't like it after that one, we'll stop." Riv smiled encouragingly, his head swiveling around and trying to see where the best picture was hiding. He'd offered for Varun to be able to stop this, so Riv wanted to have the very best picture in case it was the only one!
Ah, there! Riv motioned for the other to follow, floating towards the edge of the ruined wave pool. "Here, stand riiiight there." The Sigel pointed to a particular spot near the edge. "And look out that way, at the slides." He pointed again to make sure Varun knew what he meant. Perhaps the Frei had never heard the word "slides" before, Riv couldn't be sure. "And then, don't move until I saw you can move again, alright? Stay there!"
After the Frei was settled in his spot, Riv floated backwards, looking through his lcd screen, until he felt it was framed perfectly. He was seeing mostly Varun's back from here, with a bit of his face's profile, and the colorful Raevan was looking out at the empty pool. It seemed to mean something, Riv couldn't really be bothered to examine it more closely than that. "Alright, I'm taking a picture now, there'll be a flash... Keep looking at the slides! Aaannndd..." FLASH!!
Riv excitedly flicked to his review mode almost instantly, holding his breath. Ah, there it was! Wonderful! It had come out exactly how Riv wanted! Floating back to his friend's side, Riv showed the picture, grinning. "See? This is your picture!"

Rivener was talking so fast, the seasonal Frei barely had time to digest everything the older Raevan was spitting out at him. Easy? There was stand here (Varun bit back the urge to correct the scorpion; he knew Raevans floated), don't move, keep looking! Really, he was lucky Varun was intrigued about the project, the young Frei usually made it a point to reject orders for the sake of it. But nonetheless, the leviathan floated right where his friend had specified, doing his best to keep still until the-
Varun blinked and snapped open his wings, clearly startled by the flash despite the fact Rivener had warned him. A snarl was working its way onto his lips, but the Sigel was far faster, already by his side and showing off his artwork. Oh. Oh! That was him! Bruised pride completely forgotten, his bright yellow wings fluttered closed and Varun leaned closer, admiring the picture with a smug smile. He did stand out against this old place, didn't he?
"Very good." He did not specify if he was speaking in regards to himself or Rivener's work.
The Raevan looked around and brushed a few fingers through his hair thoughtfully. "Make more, now? Do what after?" He pointed to the picture on the screen. "Stuck there?"

Rivener was glad he'd corralled the other's temper by showing him the picture. Would he have to do this every time, he wondered, to keep Varun from getting too annoyed? Well, it only took a few seconds, and it'd be worth it to get the photos Rivener wanted. The Scorpion grinned at Varun's words, the compliment sounding a little too smug for Riv to take it as is. Most likely Varun was talking about himself. An amused smirk tugged Riv's smile up on one side.
"I'd like to make more now, if you don't mind." Varun's question continued, the sunset frei pointing to the lcd screen. Riv smiled, tilting his head. "Not stuck there, no. I put them on my computer at home, then I can print them out; makes pictures on paper that you can have, if you want them. After we take more pictures, you can pick a few that you like best and I can give them to you on paper. In a few days. Yeah?"
Riv floated back a bit, glancing around. He spotted easily a few more places he wanted Varun to stand for contrast, and he quickly pointed to the first. "Here, take a picture here." Once again he doled out instructions on where to stand and where to look, warned about the flash, then quickly made his way back to Varun's side to show the result.
Rivener continued to the next spot and the next, wings rustling happily from time to time. It's the first time he actually had a model! The Sigel could have kept this up for hours, but he kept an eye out for any sign of annoyance from Varun that might mean it's time to stop...

Varun's gaze lingered on the image for a few moments before he lifted his eyes and nodded gracefully. "Mind? Do not," he confirmed, floating a pace or so back and out of Riviner's space. He watched the scorpion lazily, brushing a hand through his hair as he considered the older Raevan's offers. His own pictures? (That was the image of him, was it not?) Pictures on papers, like books. It was a very curious thought; Varun was fairly certain he'd like to see this wonder once they were done collecting images here.
The leviathan shook his head and snapped out of his daze when the Sigel spoke, glancing towards the area specified, and nodded. He floated over and did exactly as told. This time, Varun expected the flash, but it still surprised him. The bright Raevan still started, still snarled, and was still soothed as soon as Rivener offered up the new picture. Varun was, more or less, happy to continue this process for an hour or so, but not long after that, the young Frei's attention span began to time out.
Letting out a great sigh, he flared his wings and looked around the dying park. "Enough now? Do this, do that, done all," Varun commented, waving his hand idly. "Have enough, yes? Have lots. Colors, fighting. Time now for paper Varun, bright against dark and destroyed. Wonderful." His speech flowed easily now, sprinkled with words he had picked up from Rivener earlier in the day. He'd met the Sigel before, he was much more willing to share his words with someone familiar. Suddenly, a thought struck the sunset Frei. Motioning to Rivener and his camera, he nodded.
"Turn, did want, Rivener? Varun, bright, wonderful, pretty. Rivener? Also. Bright? Not as much, but something else." He didn't have a word for Rivener's brand of uniqueness, but he trusted the scorpion would know what he was trying to imply. He waved towards the dying park. "Did want turn, being sun to dark?"

After about an hour and a good handful of pictures (close to 60, Riv noticed with a grin), Varun began giving signs of being bored with this. As expected, after the next flash and showing of the result, Varun voiced his opinion about this being done now. Riv had to admit that yeah, he had enough. Out of all these he'd surely find one or two that REALLY struck the message he'd been trying to convey here.
Varun wasn't shy about asking them to go make prints right now. Rivener chuckled, glancing over his shoulder. There should be a Kodak store or some other kind of photo-supply place nearby; those places always had the booth you could print pictures from. That would surely make Varun happy, and he deserved a reward for cooperating with Rivener's demands all afternoon. Surely "stand here, look there" for an hour had frayed at Varun's pride...
"Turn?" Riv suddenly repeated, red eyes flicking back to the sunset-colored frei, surprised at the offer. "Ah, how nice! Yes, I'd like a turn!" He grinned, amused at the compliments Varun had knowingly or not been lavishing on him. "Can you take the picture for me, please? Just point this end towards me, and you can see the world through the screen here. Just make sure you see me well in the little screen, then push this button on top! Yes?" Riv floated closer to show Varun everything as he spoke, leaving his precious camera in the frei's hands with a short burst of fear. He better not break it! Riv thought, although he shrugged off that worry an instant later.
Riv found himself a spot near a broken-cement slide, posing against it like he was looking at the cracks. "Ready!" he announced, expecting the flash any moment now.

"Yes," Varun bubbled confidently, though the idea of the young Raevan being anything but was absolutely ridiculous. He was Varun Finch and he was always right, even if he was wrong. Perhaps all of Rivener's instructions didn't make complete sense, but the leviathan was no fool. He had, after all, just spent a couple of hours floating around and letting the older male snap photos of him. It would be completely wasteful of him if he hadn't observed anything.
Of course, that didn't mean it took him a good five minutes to get the camera pointed at Riv and another ten to get it to focus the way he wanted to. Unaware it was probably difficult for the scorpion to hold a pose for that long, Varun didn't dare look up from the screen as he called, "Now!" and clicked the button in question.
The flash was bright; Varun yelped and nearly dropped the camera when it went off. But he still took the picture and Rivener's camera had survived. (Barely.) Headfins out halfway, Varun observed his work while he waited for Rivener to come and inspect.
"Rivener good. Background?" Varun shrugged his shoulders and scowled. His hand had been shaking and the background looked jagged around the Sigel. It looked nothing like anything Rivener had taken, though Varun thought it did not look so bad. It was interesting, at the very least, and hell would have to freeze over before the seasonal Frei admitted anything he did was bad.

Had Rivener spotted his precious camera teeter on the edge of safety like that when the flash came, the Scorpion would most likely have snatched it out of the leviathan's hands and refused to ever let him hold it again. As it was, Riv only turned back once the danger was over. With a smile the Sigel floated over to look at the lcd screen, chuckling at how Varun was criticizing his own work. Red eyes glanced down at the picture and it was right, the Background was indeed "Meh". No matter, Riv was in focus and centered and that's all that really mattered. The Scorpion was sure that he could manipulate the picture in photoshop or something and make it work. Perhaps blur the background even more or something...
"Good job, Varun. Just takes a bit of practice to get the back to not move, but a very very good first picture." Riv grinned, taking the camera back lightly and turning it off for now. "All done for now. But if you want, Varun, we could go print some pictures right now? We have to find a picture store, though. Would you like that?" Riv himself was rather looking forward to it; he liked a few of those shots quite a bit.

"Practice. Buh. Says Kinsey. Practice, practice, get better." Varun tapped his lips and nodded sagely. He had certainly learned more words since he practiced, though his speech pattern hadn't seemed to improve at all. Still, he could see the wisdom behind the advise. He would have to ask Kinsey help him with pictures later, when he got home.
...got home. Hmm. They had been out here a while.
Folding his arms over his chest, Varun drummed his fingers and pretended to think the Sigel's offer over. "Yes. Of course. Very much, like." He nodded once and watched Riviner expectantly, nodding again. "Lead, yes?" Naturally, that position was Varun's, but the leviathan very well couldn't lead if he had no idea where they were headed. Besides, it gave him a better chance to look around, if he were just following.
