I'm working on a paper about teen pregnancy for my social work class in university right now, and I think I'm going to add a sticky (or some sort of thread at least) with some stats and info about teen pregnancy in here once I'm done. Not so much to discourage but just so people can see that teen pregnancy really does impact the mother, her baby, and society.

Thoughts?

Maybe include a few quotes from women who are teen moms? You know, them telling their experience.

My high school newspaper did something like this, only they only included the girls' who already had their babies. And were high on the popularity scale.

I already have a sticky like that in the Pregnancy Subforum, but what I might do (now that you've suggested it) is put a link in my planned sticky, so people who are teen moms and want to share can post there. 3nodding What about that? Then (as far as I can see it), the same things aren't being posted twice.

Sounds good to me. ;D

I'll tell you what though. Teen pregnancy is rising again. You know most of them that I've talked to around here got pregnant because they wanted to, or because they felt it was time? And the ever popular, he'll stay will me if I have his baby. Two young mothers so far have had their boyfriends leave them that I personally know.

I mean, what the crap. stressed I guess that's society for you.

I'm not sure about Canada, but I'm pretty sure I've heard about it rising in the US. I'm not overly surprised, given the articles I've seen on the internet, but it's still rather sad.

And yeah, those are some of the reasons I've read about while doing research for my paper. “When Children Want Children: The Urban Crisis if Teenage Childbearing” by Leon Dash is a really good book, although I think it's a little out of date (1999).

In my Senior year in highschool I was pregnant. There were 14 other pregnant Seniors and I don't know how many juniors, sophomores, and freshman. I know at least one that was a Sophomore, and one Freshman. Some were accidents, some were on purpose. Some were the product of sheer stupidity, to be honest.

And what did all these young mothers say? " Oh, my parents will help me." Or, "he's going to get a job a McDonalds to support us."

confused I mean, seriously. My husband is a supervisor who makes $10 an hour, but only works maybe 35 hours a week, and rarely gets even 38. Never 40. That barely gets us by on rent and utilities. Sure, if you're full time, your guaranteed 40 hours, but there is no over time if you work more. Its practically volunteer work if you work over time.

Its honestly funny just how clueless some girls are.

One of the biggest eye openers while researching this paper was learning how many teens get pregnant on purpose, either because they want a baby, they're doing it to fill internal needs, they don't have any expectations for their life and so they get pregnant because it's something to do, because their culture (usually African-Americans, from what I've read) promotes it, or some other reason. A bunch of the stats also point to certain lifestyle, socioeconomic and family factors which can lead to an increased risk for teen pregnancy.

gonk

I don't get it. Having a baby is HARD. Like..really HARD if you're a teen. Nobody takes you seriously, at all. And of course, everybody has to be your mother and your baby's mother. That happens with older women, too, but more so with younger because of how people think. 'Oh, young with a baby? Need moar parenting!'

I've done my paper, so now that I have some time tonight, I think I'll try to put a thread together for you guys. I'll be adding it to a sticky in the future I think, but for now I can share the information generally. smile
