She should have known this would happen. She should have known that, eventually, he would have left her behind. She only wished he had not done it now.

The storm roared overhead and she pressed herself deeper under the roots of the old oak tree. It had started raining some time ago, and aft first, it had smelled like a regular summer shower. That, however, was an illusion. It wasn't long before the distant sounds of thunder came, rolling and grumbling like a hungry bear, and she had run, blind and stupid. She had called to him, called for him - "Redfly, where are you? Redfly, come back!" - but he never answered. Truthfully, he had not left. He had lost her when the first rumbles and cracks of thunder loomed overhead, sounds that sent her peeling off into the dark forest. He had tried to follow, tried desperately to keep up, but she had darted through undergrowth and ferns and he could not keep track of her. It had become so dark, darker than he was used to, and only the occasional flash of lightening gave him any indication as to where she might have gone.

Oh, but she knew none of this.
For all she knew, she was lost and alone.

She had not found the feeble shelter that she had by any matter of skill. She had bumbled along, once again cursing her inability to see, through the dark, black forest, and it was only when she tumbled through a gap in the roots, a gap that had been covered by lichen and moss, did she know what she had found. Silently, she thanked Tor for her fortune, and curled up among the dirt and leaf litter to wait out the storm. It was during this time that she had nothing more to do than think.

A low, steady whine rose from her throat. Why had Redfly abandoned her? Surely she had not been that much of a burden? Yes, she had disrupted his life of flirting and 'partying,' as he liked to call it, and yes, she had rejected the gifts of feathers and flowers to adorn her head and neck, but truly, that meant nothing to him? For the first time in a long time, she felt utterly alone. He had left her, he had left her, and there was no getting him back. She knew nothing of the forest other than the smell and feel of dirt and wood and grass and, oh, how she wouldn't give to see the sun again! Fenris, oh Fenris, though he was not in her usual prayer, she called for him, begged him to raise the sun once more and drown out the rain, smother it like dirt smothered fire, and let her know the warm rays once again.

And when she was done, she tucked her nose under her paw and sighed.
Tor, dear Tor, bring Redfly back.

Jet peered up curiously at the sky, ears pressed low. He shuddered when a few drops landed on his pelt, but not with cold. Even if his fur wasn't fully grown out, it was still thick enough to protect him from the few measly drops. Instead, he trembled from fear.

Although he had seen a storm or two when he was younger, this was the first time he was stuck in one without his parents. He had tried to prove to himself that he was better off without them, and thought that if he stayed out, he could show himself that he was braver as a result of him leaving the only family he had known. Unfortunately, it wasn't working as well as he had planned.

He struggled to remain where he was, an area he had chosen because the trees were further apart, which allowed him to better view the sky and its horrors while letting the rain fall more freely. It had yet to occur to him that he could (and most likely would) grow sick and die, as he had none to care for him.

At least, when his logic failed, his fear kicked in. At the first crack of thunder he fled, deeper into the forest. He tripped often and regretted that he had not taken the time to look for some sort of shelter before. When he caught the sight of a gap between the roots of a tree, he headed for it instantly, without pausing to see if another creature had already taken residence inside.

Pawsteps.

Immediately, she fell silent, her blind eyes wide with a mixture of fear, worry, desperation and hope. Could it be Redfly? Had he not abandoned her after all? Oh, she knew it, she did! He would not have left her behind in this terrible storm - he was too kind to do such a thing. A small smile tugged at her lips, but it instantly vanished when she realized something, something that was quite important.

The pawsteps were too light.

Though she had really only been with him for a short time (two, perhaps three months), she knew the sound of him. She was well versed in every curve of his body, every dip and crevice, where every muscle and tendon lie under the folds of flesh and fur. She knew that he smelled of ceder and dogwood, pine and birch. She was sure that she must have smelled the same. She knew the way her moved, though she could not see it. While he was a male, and much older than herself, he did not bumble through the woods. He resembled more of a deer, graceful and agile, than a bear. His pawsteps were heavy, yet well placed, and contrasted greatly with her own light, quick steps. Immediately, her head fell to the dirt, her chin itching as the mud slicked against her skin. Her brain slowed to a sluggish crawl, and she barely registered that there was another coming for where she had hidden herself away.

While it was not Redfly, it was Varg.
Part of that terrified her, and part of it consoled her.

The other was running, no doubt frightened by the storm. Anyone caught out in it had either been unable to find shelter or simply too far from their den. She didn't really have a den to go to - she and Redfly often wandered the Transylvanian plateau, simply coming and going as they pleased. There were few packs these days, and Redfly truly felt that he had a right to be where ever he wanted to be. After all, he often told her, no one owns Mother Earth. She smiled softly at the memory, her eyes slipping closed. Another crack of thunder, however, had her pulling her head up so fast that it made her dizzy. He was closer now, and while her senses were dulled because of the rain, she knew he was male and she knew he was young. She grew immediately wary. It wasn't often a young male pup was left alone in the woods, let alone during a storm. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she peered up out of the hole, unsure of whether to invite him in or not.

Eventually, she decided on the former.
"You're going to get sick if you stay out there any longer, you know."

The trees seemed to close in around him, as if they were a pack of two-leggers out to get him. He had never really seen a human before, but hearing about them always made strange images come to mind, because, really, what walked on two legs when it had four perfectly good ones?

Jet, in his desperation to flee the oncoming storm and looming trees, took no notice of the other pup between the tree roots until he was almost upon her. Afraid to crash into her, he attempted to veer away, and proceeded to crash right into the root beside her. He backed away, shook himself, and, pretending nothing had happened, replied to the comment he barely heard.

"Yeah. Yeah, I know." he said, although he only realized her words were true when she mentioned them. He peered inside what he assumed was her den, ears raised and nose twitching for signs of older Varg. Curious when it seemed the small pup was the only inhabitant, he cocked his head. He was about to ask if he could go in, or something, when another crack of thunder prompted him to squeeze inside instantly.

He didn't seem to have noticed her, at first. His pawsteps were irregular, uneven, frightened - honestly, she could tell why - and he was moving closer at such a pace that she thought he might barrel right past her, or into her, depending on his current course. She drew back slightly, her ears pressing against her head in a moment of fear, and she pushed herself deeper into the hole and against the dirt and roots. There was the sudden skittering of paws, and bits of mud and rocks sprayed as he veered. A loud thump and the shaking of the tree roots around her told the obvious story that he had collided with the tree, and that he had, in fact, seen her.

She crept forward, her paws slight against the ground and her body low, and peeked out, blinking as the rain beat into her face. He was shaking himself (she could hear his wet fur brushing and tugging against his skin) off, and seemed to be unharmed, but it was in her nature to be concerned for the well being of others, even if the other was a complete stranger.

"Are you alright?" she asked softly, wondering if he could hear her over the roar of the thunder and wind. He had heard her the first time, obvious due to his answer, and she frowned somewhat. She was about to tell him to come in when thunder cracked overhead. He was there, at her side, instantly, and she quickly moved herself to give him more room. It wasn't a very big shelter, and while it might have been tight with anyone else, she wasn't a very large wolf. She fell silent for a while, merely staring in his direction with eerie accuracy. She could hear his breathing, and thus, knew the general position of his face, and where his eyes might be. She was tempted to ask him what he was going out in this sort of weather, yet knew the answer would be a repeat directed at her. She was not sure she wanted to disclose that her only protection had abandoned her. After all, who knew where his pack was, and if they would tolerate a young pup (a young blind pup, she reminded herself bitterly) in their territory.

A Dragga would not tolerate babble about owning Mother Earth.

Finally, her ears flicked forward, and she opened her mouth to say something, before closing it again. She wasn't sure what she wanted to say, which was odd. She was, oftentimes, the most levelheaded, the most logical, and yet here she was, no doubt looking like a fish. Not that she knew what a fish actually looked like, but Redfly had described them to her once, as he often did with many things. He had always seemed so frustrated, having to explain this and that to her when he thought she could see it just as well through smell and touch. In a way, he was right; her other senses were unparalleled. It might take some time, but she would eventually be able to grasp the general image in her mind's eye. She would not, however, be able to tell what color, or if it shimmered, or glowed. In reality, she knew what none of these were, but Redfly often described these things in such passion that she found she could understand them.

"It is... strong, is it not?" she asked, referring to the storm.

Jet, realizing what he did, flickered his ears nervously before straigthening himself, so that he looked taller. He had yet to notice the female pup was blind, and, assuming she could see, he started to try and smooth out his fur with a paw.

"I...." he started, stuttering, wondering what he could say to convince the other that he had come in just because he wanted to, and not because of the thunder. "The... uh...." he continued with his so far very persuasive explanation, fading off when the female spoke.

"It is." he agreed, glad for the change of topic. Realizing he was still wet, he instinctively stood and shook himself, then gasped out a startled apology once he noticed he had only ended up spraying the shelter, and the pup, with the water that had been on his coat only moments before.

Stuttering.
He was stuttering?

At first, she didn't understand it. Surely, it was not because of her? No, she was not imposing, not threatening. She was female, and he was male - it was almost certain that he was the larger of the two. It was a common thing or so Redfly had once told her, for males to be larger than females. Males, he told her, were meant to fight and to protect the pack, while females were meant for other things. Physical altercations were useless to females. She, however, did not know this for fact - perhaps he was telling her that she had no business in fighting? She would likely never know. She would also likely never know why he believed this, but she had her theories.

Regardless.

She was small, or at least smaller than he was, and she was also blind. It was this fact that always seemed to make her bitter, being unable to see what others could, but she was also, in a way, thankful. Redfly told her many times that she was lucky, and did not have to see the evils of the world. She, however, did not think so. She knew only blackness; color, shape, size - it was all meaningless to her. She did not know that rain was clear or that clouds were gray, that the sky was blue or that grass was green. She did not know that the pup who sat before her was black and gray and white, like mountain tops. What she did know was that he was young, naive, much like herself, and that his voice sounded like the garble of a river of stones. So then, why was he stuttering? As another, smaller crack of thunder resounded overhead, she was reminded of the storm, and understood.

However, she said nothing. She had become good at feigning ignorance - when one lived with Redfly, one had to know what was and wasn't acceptable to comment on. Instead, she merely waited for his reply, and when it came, she smiled. "Perhaps it will pass, soon. There is too much charge for it to last too long." Of course, she did not know how thick the clouds were, and she was reluctant to ask. He had yet to comment on her blindness, which was strange, but she would rather keep it out of their present conversation. When she felt the sudden spray of cold wetness, she tensed up and gasped, shivering visible. It took her a moment to realize that he had shaken himself off, and was now apologizing for it. She shook her head, and smiled again.

"It's alright," she said softly.
She was not going to scold him for something she would have done, herself.

Jet frowned, eyes flickering anxiously. Her voice was unexpectedly soft -- not the sharp, reprimanding exclamation he had anticipated -- and he wondered if she was mad at him. It was hard to tell from voice alone, but the dimness of the den made it hard for him to see her clearly.

"I... I really am sorry." he repeated tentatively, fiddling his muddied paws nervously, despite the fact that she was smaller than he. He disliked it when others were mad at him, and was prone to get angry and defensive himself.

(Sorry for ze small reply. OTL Just wanted to get something in so I could stop worrying about it. xD; OTL)
