So I just recently became a vegetarian. About 3 days ago. I'm trying my hardest not to eat any meat because It's against my beliefs but my family isn't helping any..every night for dinner i have to excuse myself because theres beef, ham, etc. on the table. I'm used to eating meat and breaking the habit is hard. I'm also really sluggish because of lack of protein. Can someone help me with some tips/advice?

hi am iliana, am 16 years old
well am going to tell you little about myself first.
i became a vegetarian on april 19, 2009. and i became a vegan just 3 days ago (like you!).
ok well when i first started the first week , was really hard. because my family eats alot of meat. then i had a talk with my mom about my special diet, and why am doing it. talking about it to her helped because then we had changed our way of eating (the whole family). she then started teaching me how to cook meals with out meat, that are satisfying. and my family also stoped eating as much meat as back then, and now when ever we eat, there is always something that am able to eat, like for example: rice.
i gained lots of responsibility, by dont this.
oh and on the protein.. try to drink lots of soy milk,
i dont know if its the same way for you but, i hoped i helped.

for protein it's easy! just eat beans, they're my favorite. :3 plus there are lots of meat substitutes like seitan, tvp, tofu and tempeh!

as for the meat at the table.. if you're eating with your family, it's just something you'll have to get used to. /: blehh.

It may be hard, but it'll just make your dedication to your new lifestyle all the more sweeter and satisfying when you have to go through obstacles. It's nice to challenge ourselves every once in a while.

I had the same problem when I went vegetarian; my parents would cook steaks on the grill and since we all ate together, well, that kinda sucked for me lol. Eventually they started grilling me some portobello mushrooms along with the steak, and since the mushrooms taste sooo good when they're grilled, it was a perfect substitute. I even taught my mom a few things about vegetarian cooking, the same things she uses to this day!

As for your protein deficiency, the previous two posters are correct; soybeans are high in protein. I personally like to snack on dry-roasted edamame (soybeans), which you might be able to find in you local organic section of the supermarket. They taste way better than peanuts and are also quite filling.

well, i suggest sitting your parents down, calmly explain that you're changing your diet, & explain your reasoning in a way that it doesn't escalate to an argument(a lot of teenage veg*ns have been through that before gonk ). as for protein, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes & eggs if you're not vegan are good sources of protein. also good to note, you need to get new sources of iron now! spinach is my favorite, but most dark leafy greens will give you a good source of iron.

hope i was of some help smile

If you are eating RIGHT. You'd have plenty of protein. Vegans dont eat dairy or egg and we still get by with having enough protein.

Eat your VEGGIES. Make Vegetables your main course, not your side-dish.

Its more likely you aren't getting enough iron though.
Veggies are abundant in Iron if you eat enough of them.

Eat a big-ol plate of Edamame. One cup would have around 24 grams of Protein, which is about half of your daily value.
Eat tofu, its cheap high in protein. Eat tempeh. One serving of Tempeh has 22 grams of protein.
Boca Burgers are also amazing.

Do some research on what you should be eating. Being a vegetarian involves a lot of research. Dont be afraid to ask us questions.
I was a "pesco-ovo-lacto [fish, egg and milk] Vegetarian" from age 12-16, ovo-lacto Vegetarian from 17-18. And now age 19 and a Vegan.
I had to do so much research to get where I am, and I'm still researching and finding out what I need to be eating.

As far as your parents go, ask them to respect your compassionate decision. It will take a long time for them to get used to it.
It took years for my dad to finally give me respect.

My friends and family still eat meat in front of me.
I'd prefer they didn't but I get over it.
We dont eat together as a family, but whenever we go out to eat we do.
[I hate it when my friends are like "SORRY I'M EATING MEAT IN FRONT OF YOU [continues to eat it]" If you're sorry then stop :/ ]

Anyway,
If you need to know what you should be eating, continue to ask questions here.

But assuming you still eat dairy and egg, I suggest you consume those sparingly. Milk isn't as good for you as they say it is. Its more normal to be lactose intolerant than to be tolerant. They say if you can digest milk with no problems then you've got a mutation or something.

Veggies should be you main course. Eat beans, nuts legumes, whole grains too. Those are important.

i just became a Semi-vegetarian about a week and a half ago,
and to go years eatting meat and just stop is kinda hard
semi vegetarians eat meat on occassion, which is good for me cause i can eat it like once a week
i will become a 100% "i do not eat meat at all" vegetarian later on, but im going to work my way up there
my dad keeeps getting pissed at me cause im not eating meat but thats my choice and im sure he will get used to it.
i eat alot of veggies, and this chocolate soy stuff, that i eat as pudding, or as a fruit fondue when i melt it and i love beans like kidney or black beans
and whenever i relize that i didnt have alot of protein, i cook up a 2 egg omlette with onions and morning star veggie meat crumbles, which gives me a good source of daily protien
my aunt is very supportive of my choice right now, shes been eatting veggie meat for years even though shes not a vegetarian, she just likes eating it xD
so she doesnt mind buying me a few extra boxes of veggie meat and a few extra cans of beans every week
as for your parents, just talk to them, theyll understand, and if they dont and they still want you to eat meat, go with it for now, like if your in school just dont eat meat for lunch,

it sucks sometimes when your under your parents house and under there rules -.-.
