A lot of people have told me that a petticoat should not be worn on its own no matter what the circumstances are. I am having trouble believing this after seeing my favorite singer and lolita, Nana Kitade wear many outfits that just have her petticoat for a skirt. If anyone can give me any advice on this or find proof that I am wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you have to keep in mind that she is a singer and stage performer, and not every lolita wears lolita 24/7. Not even her. What she wears for photoshoots and for her gigs often doesn't fly elsewhere even when it is lolita, because it's being used as a costume and is so over the top.

Also, a lot of her outfits aren't lolita at all. The ones in particular with the petticoats lean more heavily towards a punked out fairy kei/spank! style than lolita. The two styles share aesthetics in the sense that they're cute and feminine, but they aren't the same thing by a long shot. The coordination and the way the clothing is treated is the major difference.

Thank you for your insight. One of the pictures I saw was definitely a gothic lolita style but she had her petticoat on with no overskirt. It looked really good and I am wondering why is it such taboo if it looks so good and forms like a regular skirt.

Can you show me the image in question? The only ones I've seen where she had on petticoats without skirts were definitely not lolita coordinates.

I personally think that while it is acceptable to wear petticoats on their own, it is not lolita. It may only be my opinion, but it puts to mind the eighties and scene kids; and while those are unquestionably adorable, they aren't lolita. If you feel like dressing a little scene one day and a little loli the next, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I will try to find the images again they were on her myspace.
