I was looking through Cnets top 25 tech flops (lots of Sony in here).
Number 15 the UMD.
Now I agree that the UMD music and movies never made a hit but I though that UMDs were GREAT for games. The storage was PERFECT and the quality coming out was great as well.
Now I'm sure that next generation of handhelds will have all the games downloaded but for what the UMD did they did it great.
To me in the gaming department they were not a failure.

I think the biggest issue is people decided they did not like them from the start and it has effected rating them, even now. You are right, frankly, the UMD was superior to the cartrages that the GBA or the cards the DS use. The larger storage allowed the system to have superior games, the area it lacked tended to be how lazy developers were but the blame fell on the UMD and PSP by default.

^ I agree...
almost everything negative i heard about the UMDs were about the movies. Not that they were bad or anything like that, but that people werent gonna pay an extra what...20 bux? to watch a movie on a tiny screen. Other than that, i dont remember seeing anything about the UMD games...hell i thought it was great...they were pretty much scratch resistant unless you were trying to screw them up

While UMD's served their purpose at the start, but I now would consider them obsolete seeing as memory sticks can be found in retail up to 32GB's. Also the Playstation Store has become quite a fantastic system which renders UMD pretty much useless now.
It was a short run, but I'm glad that it is seeing it's last days.
