The pen stopped it motion as the breeze tugged on her skirt, a refreshing little breath. Ramaha turned back to the papers, lips pursed as she worked on deciphering the water damage list of running beast studs and offspring. She shifted, working out the kinks in her shoulder. Two hours of copying out papers and she was mentally fatigued and bored.

Really, this was apprentice work. On top of that it was breeding records nothing to do with her sub-class of healing. “Of all things I had to agree to do.” She grumbled out, licking her lips. “Back to work…only ten more pages to do.”

‘Great.’ Rami continued to write, pen stratching away. Still, it was rather nice to be back in Keeron.

The skies above Keroon were blue and clear until a dragon popped in from Between. Shouts rang within the Hold, announcing the arrival of a dragon and its rider. The Blue dragon spiraled down lazily, eventually landing outside the front of the Hold. The Blue’s rider slipped off of him, a small bag clutched in her hand. The slender rider, a woman named Mella, took a moment to listen to the disturbance her arrival had caused.

‘ Just delivering a message, but I admit, this arrival is more interesting the what I’m used to.’

‘ Because you have me now.’ Replied the Blue, his voice faintly smug.

Mella rolled her eyes and strode towards the Hold entrance, where someone was waiting. She introduced herself briskly. “ Mella and Blue Cresth of Ista Weyr, delivering a message from Ista Hold for your Lord.”

Originally Mella had simply planned to give the message to one of the Lord Holder’s men and be done with it, mainly because Cresth had yet to feed; a hungry Cresth was a grumpy Cresth. She was surprised, therefore, at what Cresth said next. ‘ Take your time, deliver the message. These people interest me.’

Mella arched an eyebrow at that. She suspected that was dragon-speak for feeling that a possible Candidate was lurking in the Hold, an idea that Mella didn’t relish. Ista Weyr was overrun as it was, and she was not on an official Search, but as Ista was not yet at the point of turning away Candidates Mella would be obliged to return with whomever Cresth picked out.

‘ Very well. Play nice.’

A rumble of protest was Cresth’s response – ‘ I do not play!’ – just as Mella intended; that would draw the more curious from their hiding holes. In the meanwhile…

“ If you please, escort me to you Lord Holder. I shall only take a moment of his time.”

'Nearly...' Ramaha took a deep breath writing down the last line before looking upwards at the shouts. "What...ahh, a dragon." Her eyes crinkled, watching the blue lazy spirals, such graceful things for creatures so large. She turned back to her work, shuffling the papers back into order. "There finished." Which meet she could get a look at the newest arrival.

She stood, smoothing her skirt and brushing away a bit of invisible dust. ‘First thing first, deliver the papers.’ She set off at a brisk but dignified walk to the archives for the most part ignoring the sudden gossip and chattering of what the rider, a woman it seemed, wanted with Keroon hold.

“If anything it could be food,” she muttered.

Mella endured the unfortunate formalities associated with meeting with a Lord Holder without giving away her impatience. When at last the introductions were done, pleasantries exchanged, and letter delivered, the blue rider was finally able to speak what was on her mind.

“ Cresth has taken an interest in your Hold. We are not on official Search, and Cresth has never Searched before, but after the last Hatching…” Mella trailed off briefly, recalling the little Blue that had gone Between.

The Lord Holder had obviously heard the sad news for he merely nodded an asked, “ What would you like to do?”

“ Word of mouth should be enough to draw out the interested. Ring the bell if you wish, but I’d hate to get people’s hopes up.”

Taking her leave of the Lord Holder, she had not gotten far when she heard the bell ring to announce a Search, though it was not rung as often as normal. Mella’s pace slackened slightly as she watched people emerge and head out the Hold to where Cresth waited. From her vantage point she could see him shifting and eyeing the growing crowd uncomfortably.

‘ I though you said these people interested you?’

‘ They do, but they don’t.’

Mella had an inkling of what Cresth meant, but only the Blue fully understood his thoughts.

The bell? She paused, brow wrinkling slightly. Ista weyr was crowded-not that any hold or weyr boasted space- but this was most unexpected. Rom left the papers for an apprentice to handle, walking down to the hold. It would be interesting at least to watch. Being chosen was minuscule at best; she was just a few turns away from reaching the peak of the age limit…

Still, ‘Rish was at Ista hold and with the little blue ill fated jump, well, she was worried about her cousin’s health. The glass smith just recently had learned of her cousin’s
‘I’ll fix it/I can handle it’ policy even when he was quite over his head.

‘Well isn’t he pretty,’ she thought, looking up at the blue. ‘Does this mean the weyr is healing a bit after the tragic misfortune?’

‘ Boys.’ Hissed Cresth, rustling his wings irritably. ‘ Why are there boys? I am not interested in the boys. Make them go away so I can see the girls!’

Shaking her head, Mella wove through the crowd and made her way to Cresth’s side. She gave him a brief, calming touch before turning to face the crowd. Taking a breath, she made certain to speak clearly and loud enough so that all could hear. “ I am Mella, this is Cresth, and we come from Ista Weyr. Cresth seems to think there’s a Candidate amongst you, however, he’s only interested in the girls. That being said, I’d like the boys to step back or leave and the girls to step forward and form a semi-circle so I can see you all.”

The dragon seemed a bit irritated, perhaps a bit cranky almost seeming to give a glare at the rather eager young men and boys crowding about. Not surprising that the male folk where eager to be chosen. Impressions tended to be heavily male with a few females impressing smaller dragons and the queen if one was laid.

His rider, a young woman with full lips, shook her head and calmed him down before calling out quite clearly what her dragon desired. Her lips almost twitched into an amused smiled at the boy’s woebegone expression. Ramaha took her place, glazing up at the dragon. “Such a handsome creature.”

‘ There are too many.’ Cresth’s annoyance was directed at Mella now, as if were somehow her fault that so many girls remained, never mind the fact that this had been his idea.‘ Get rid of some.’

Recalling as much as she could from her lessons, Mella began to examine the girls present. It was true that the dragon played an important role in Searches, but what some seemed to have forgotten was that the dragon’s riders had a role in the Search process as well. Mella dismissed many of the younger girls, as well as all the one’s that seemed fearful of Cresth’s presence. Finally the number of remaining girls seemed low enough to satisfy the blue dragon.

‘ Better.’

With that Cresth shuffled forward, and lowered his large head in front of the nearest girl to examine girl. Apparently she didn’t pass muster because he soon snorted at shifted slightly to look at the next girl. This repeated several times, Mella dismissing each rejected girl as gently as she could. When Cresth came before a short – well, short compared to most Weyr inhabitants – and well-endowed woman, he seemed to stare at her for longer then usual. He inched closer, his gaze intent, a heavy feeling behind it as the Blue did his best to examine the girl’s mind. Finally he moved back enough so that he was out of the girl’s personal space and rumbled, catching Mella’s attention.

‘ This one will do.’

‘ Any others?’

‘ I am not interested in examining the others.’

Mella walked over to the girl that had grabbed Cresth’s interest, giving her a brief once-over before turning to the remaining girls.

“ Thank you for your time, but Cresth has made his pick. The rest of you may leave.” Turning to the girl, she added in a more normal-volume voice,“ So, are you willing to Stand at Ista Weyr?”

Mella it seemed was quite able and quick. She had cut many of the younger girls, some Rom was sure were under age and all that seemed scared of the blue. Which brought the question, why they even bother to stand when a blue, one of the smaller dragons, could intimate them?

Now the numbers had dwindled to something reasonable they got down to business. She glazed at the dragon as he examined her, taking in the fine coloring and details of the skin making up his face in professional interest. Part of her itched to run her fingers across the dragon's skin to see if it truly felt like warm soft leather as it looked. The other part itched to sketch.

This time, Rom allowed her mouth to twitch into a small smile. "If I was not, I would still be in the archives penning papers." She replied curtly. "And, this gives me an opportunity to keep an eye on my slightly younger cousin who currently lives on Ista Hold."

“ Fair enough. I assume you’ll have to pack, maybe tie up loose ends, but I’d appreciate it if you were quick about it; Cresth is hungry.”

Mella reckoned that it would be more inconvenient to deal with a grumpy Cresth then for the girl to hitch a ride back to this Hold to wrap up an unessential business. Cresth seemed to agree with this, for he let out a short, bark-like sound to emphasize his impatience.

"It will not take long, though I suggest if Cresth is hungry you might wish to speak to anyone of the Master class Beastcrafters. I'm sure they could find something for him to snack on." Rom grinned and started walking to her rooms.

"My name is Ramaha, just so you know Mella." She called out. Running was undignified and tended to hinder then to help in the crowded hold. Most of her things where still packed from the nearly month long trip spent delivering letters and helping out/ tracking down family.

Packing wise only her work clothing and a few personal grooming/hygiene articles. She penned a quick note, leaving it where her room mate could easily find it, shoulder the heavy leather pack, lifted the truck and walked back to the dragon.

‘I wonder if she asked.’ Rom toss her head, a bit more careful walking back down the halls so not to knock into someone with the trunk.

Mella had intended to ask the girl’s name eventually, but had planned to wait until the girl was up on Cresth’s back, so as to make sure that the girl didn’t change her mind at the last minute. Shrugging, she decided it didn’t really matter.

Mella motioned to a lingering girl, telling her to inquire about food for Cresth. Cresth didn’t seem particularly interested in eating at Keroon – something about gawkers and not enough time – but after Mella told him that he would eat or wait, Cresth grudgingly slunk in the direction of food.

Pursing her lips slightly, Rom made way to the pens deciding that Mella would feed Cresth when offered a meal then have the dragon wait. Certainly a hungry dragon was a cranky dragon. A inquirty brought to light that yes the dragon was being feed and where.

She continued on, keeping the diginified pace. Part of her wanted her to run like her cousin probably would, skid to a shop all red face and out of breath , hair disarranged tangles. Brishen was male though, certainly that would be expected. Dangerous. Instead she kept level headed, giving Mella a wave as the rider came in sight. "I am set."
