Throngs of people milled about on the streets of Ikebukero in the mid-morning rush of things, watched carefully by the smoldering amber eyes of a lone tom cat. Perched high in a tree along the sidewalk, the Somali sat in the joint of a limb and the trunk with a steaming bowl in his paws. He watched the despised two-legged creatures wander about, unaware of his presence, as he scooped rice, beef, and various veggies up with his chopsticks and popped it all into his mouth. He was especially irritated this morning for some reason, and his tail relayed that sour mood with it's violent lashing below him. The scar, hidden beneath the fabric on his back, burned with his memories as he watched them. They were troublesome and numerous, and the tom had decided long ago that he would never again find company with one of them, but he had to admit that certain humans prepared food quite well. Scooping up more of his nikudon, the Somali growled to himself at the admittance.

Just keep going East... you can't miss it.

Lluven hadn't minded taking directions from an alley cat. While he was still technically under the ownership of a human, the past few weeks spent in the streets had radically changed his outlook on life. Soon, he was sure, he would start being more aware of shelter, of safety, of food. Soon, he would need to survive on his own.

Right now, though, he wandered freely, confident in a warm home that awaited him at any time of day.

It was true that changed the way he looked at some strays. Speaking to Sol had made him realize that not all cats respected humans the way he did; In fact, most of them probably despised the two-legged creatures. After all, how does one become a stray, if not abandoned in some way or another?

He hadn't been abandoned. But he had been special, hadn't he? And soon, that was all going to change. Flicking his tail deftly, he walked alongside the humans, every once in a while hearing the charmed cry of an animal enthusiast. It made him a little less lonely in the new world he had been pushed into.

Just keep going East. There are woods there, and a lake.

That was what he had intended to do, but the scent of human food had drifted down to him. He paused in his walk, padded over to a tree by the side of the street. His ears flicked back and forth excitedly as he looked up, a curious grin on his face.

From his vantage point, the Somali tom was able to keep a good watch on everything around him, so he noticed the brown dappled cat that made it's way through the crowds of humans and paused beneath his perch. Amber eyes peered down at the tom over his bowl of nikudon as he took another bite, and his own ears tilted back slightly as the other cat grinned back up at him.

Swallowing his mouthful, Dhiren set the bowl in his lap and flicked his hanging tail again. "...Yes?" He meowed flatly, finally, when it became apparent that the spotted cat wasn't going to leave, "Is there something you need here?" He began to grow slightly irritated with the look in the other male's eyes and with the fact that his direct interest in Dhiren would draw attention to him by the stupid two-legged creatures wandering about.

Ah, nikudon...

The slightly intoxicating smell of the Japanese dish wafted down to him, and Lluven let out a sigh of contentment. Anne-lise stuck with her weird western food faithfully, so it had been a long time since he had last seen a proper asian dish. It brought back memories.

Matters, however, had to be dealt with. For the other cat seemed a little older than he was, and collar-less. And the flat, cold tone that he addressed Lluven with told him quite clearly that he wasn't welcome.

Immediately, he wiped the stupid grin off his face.

"I was just passing by and I happened to smell your meal, is all," he responded politely, fixing his gaze on the older cat. "It looks very good."

He considered apologizing for a second, but quickly batted it from his mind. Why would he apologize? Besides, he had been taught that apologies were only good if you meant them.

The crook of the tree looked low and inviting. He felt his legs itch with the thought of jumping, and without his realizing it he lept onto it with a sort of domestic grace, though he made sure to keep from this new stranger.

Dhiren was not amused with this guy at all, especially when he took an express interest in his meal. "Well, the shop that sells it is just down the road, don't bother me with your be--" What began as a tone of dismissal, got abruptly cut off as the tree trembled with the weight of another ascending its branches, "Oi! What the hell do you think you're doing?" With both paws clutching the bowl that nearly tumbled out of his lap with the sudden tremor, Dhiren's ears were fully pinned back now. Whipping the air beneath him, the tom's fury at nearly losing his meal was quite visible. "What do you want?" He growled, eying the other with burning amber eyes, "There's no way I'm going to give you any of this, so don't get your hopes up."

Digging his chopsticks into the rice and meat bowl again, the Somali stuffed a good bit of it into his mouth as if making a point, his eyes warily staying fixated on the other tom, just in case he decided to do something else unexpected. Something seemed off with this one, if only slightly so.

That. Was probably to be expected.

Still, Lluven couldn't help himself from flinching a little, a little surprised at how this new cat was treating him. He admitted it was probably his fault- he had disturbed his meal and was now nimbly traipsing his territory with what looked like no qualms, but it still wasn't grounds for the fury that was now aimed at him.

"Hey, look, I'm not here to fight you," he breathed, even lifting both paws to raise his belly rather comically towards the other. "I'm just..."

What was he doing? He had learned over time that he wasn't a morning person, but this was an all-time low. So he had gotten lost, again, but that didn't give him any right to go push some stranger's buttons like he owned the place.

Well... now it had been done. He certainly couldn't go back now.

Luckily, though, he didn't have to offer an excuse as the other stray unwittingly gave him one. He flashed the other a grin- not the same, dopey grin as earlier, but an accepting, anything-goes expression.

"Okay," he affirmed, leaping nimbly into another crook of the tree, a little further away from his moody companion. "That's a pity. Don't mind me, then, I'll just be nibbling my leaves over here."

Which meant, sub rosa, I'll be thinking of an excuse for me to stay here. Because despite himself, he was a little interested in this new alley cat.

Dhiren watched him shift to another branch, his expression falling a little flat as he continued to be unimpressed with this cat. "Do what you like," He growled, working on finishing off his meal, "don't expect me to take any pity on you though. You're up the wrong tree."

As he finished his nikudon, both russet-tipped ears tilted back, listening to whatever the other tom was doing on his side of the tree. "Well, I'm going now." Leaving his bowl in the crook of the tree with the chopsticks neatly laid over the top of it, the Somali dropped from the tree and stuck his hands in the pockets of his slacks. With his tail slowly flicking from one side to another, he strolled off down the sidewalk. What to do now...?

As Dhiren got up abruptly and left, Lluven felt the tiniest pang of heroism stirring in the folds of his heart. It was true that this stingy tom was moody and quite rude, but what was the saying? Those who are the hardest to love need it the most.

Anyway, that was what he told himself. Really, he was just interested in any dark persona that he came across. Sent flying from the pleasant domestic world where the worst cats were just bratty or overly flamboyant, he certainly didn't have much experience under his collar.

He didn't let it bother him, though, as he watched the other male drop smoothly from the tree and walk off the scene, leaving the bowl behind like some arrogant litter-machine. The Savannah frowned and retrieved the bowl and chopsticks, careful not to drop them as he pattered up to the Somali.

"You were just going to leave these behind?" he asked calmly, more curious than chiding. He peered carefully at the man, then fell into a natural step beside him. He would worry about where they were going later.

"I'll return them for you if you show me which store it belongs to."

Ears perking up and then laying back again when he realized his unwanted company was following him, Dhiren's tail fell into a low curl, the tip flicking rapidly. With a grunt, he closed his eyes and jerked his thumb in the direction of a small shop as they passed it. "It came from that place; although, I'm not sure why you're worried about returning it..." He growled with irritation, "I'm also not sure why you're following me. I don't recall yowling an invitation to anyone..."

Opening his eyes again, he glared down at the smaller tom while he matched the Somali's pace. What the hell was he supposed to do with a tag-along? "Is there something in particular you need?" He asked, lacking any trace of real concern or interest, "I'm not a very helpful sort of guy, you should know." Dhiren took notice of the collar clinging to the other male's neck still and let his shoulders slump slightly. This was turning out to be one great afternoon, he was being followed by another who had recently left the care of humans. "Oi... Don't tell me you're lost or something, Spot." He grumbled quietly, staring straight ahead into the crowds of people, "Were you just dumped a few days ago or something? Look, I don't run a shelter or anything, you know." Reaching up with one hand, Dhiren tugged the collar of his brown undershirt down before looping a finger through the collar left with him by his previous owner and giving it a light tug. Glancing down at the other tom, as if to prove a point, he growled, "See? I'm in the same boat as you are... well, sort of. At least I know where I'm going to be sleeping tonight."

(We'll just pretend that Lluven couldn't see Dhiren's collar earlier... since he's still actually collared and I don't think I'm okay to be playing him as anything but right now. XD)

As Dhiren pointed out the shop, Lluven bounded off for a second to place the bowl rather innocuously outside the door. He laid the chopsticks over it as neatly as the Somali had prior and then rejoined his cheerless companion. He returned in time to catch the last notes of irritation trembling in his tone.

At the sudden question, Lluven looked up, quirking a brow. It was true the man had asked rather apathetically, but it proved to him that he wasn't cold-blooded. He answered frankly,

"No."

There was nothing in particular that he needed. There were things he wanted, but no necessity existed for them. After all, he would probably find East Ikebukuro eventually. It wasn't half as interesting as this stranger he was sure he'd never meet again, if he lost sight of him now.

The next statement, however, was dead on. Lluven winced inwardly and peered up at his companion, deftly avoiding a staggering human that was obviously inebriated.

"Lluven is my name," he stated quietly, not offended. As the other man reached up to reveal his collar, he relaxed visibly, "I'm lost, but I'm not seeking refuge. In that manner, too, we do seem to be in the same boat."

The cheerful, noodle-happy cat from before had somehow disappeared, melted into a laid-back character that was truer, somehow real.

"Besides, what's the good in knowing where you'll sleep tonight if you don't really belong anywhere?"

His tone was gently teasing, but he looked up at the Somali with a hint of warmness in his eyes. Whatever came, he would take it with no complaints.

Dhiren blinked at the other Tom when he agreed about their boat situation; what exactly was that supposed to mean? He continued walking, sighing to himself as his paws unconsciously took him towards the east side of town. "What makes you think I don't belong, Lluven?" He growled softly after a while, "I'm certain that we established you as the lost kitten." When he looked at him again, Dhiren was surprised at the serious, yet warm expression on the other's face and felt his own warm up very slightly. "A-anyway," He coughed, lowering his ears a little in embarrassment, "How do you figure that you can find a place to belong without first finding a place to call 'home?'" Although his tone was always rumbling, an edge of interest was beginning to make itself known. They were stuck together now anyway, it seemed, so Dhiren wanted to at least hear what the cat had to say before ditching him.

Lluven took in the tom's sighs, his gait. Though he spoke with confidence and menace he felt that they weren't true to his heart. After all, would a truly inimical persona ask if there was something that he needed? He had a feeling that, had he spoke of something he did need, he would have been assisted, however begrudgingly.

For this reason, and a few others, he walked alongside him with no hesitation. He wasn't afraid of becoming lost even further; rather, in his opinion, once one was lost, it wasn't a matter of severity. One was either lost or not, and he simply happened to be the former.

When the other did not give his name in return, he was a little surprised, but he didn't hold it against him. After all, he saw that the giving of a name was an acceptance of the other person, a show of respect. Seeing as he had been treated rather gruffly the entire conversation, it wouldn't quite make sense for the Somali to offer a name. If he did, eventually, that'd be a step forward.

At the strange question, he simply shrugged and gave his honest answer, flicking his ears forward in earnestness,

"I figure once you become a stray, you can't really belong anywhere. After that, nothing is for sure. And when someone says 'forever' you know that it could just be a moment."

He reached up and fingered his collar thoughtfully, then flashed a sudden grin at the other cat.

"I didn't say I belonged somewhere, did I? I think I'm fine with wandering for the rest of my life- it rather suits me."

Somehow, he sensed his companion slowly warming up to him. He felt lucky for loving nikudon, for Anne-lise never having it and for having been Anne-lise's cat in the first place. But then again, perhaps it was true that nothing was circumstance, after all.

While there was truth to be had in 'forever' being just a word, Dhiren couldn't get himself to think in the mindset of the spotted cat. As a stray, he was no longer bound and controlled by the whim of the humans, he was free. "You've still got a lot to learn then." He growled simply, leaving the sidewalk to jump onto a high stone wall and follow it's path for a bit. Very loosely, the somali had an idea of where they were going. He knew the town, but he didn't have a destination in mind for their stroll. "I belong where I choose to belong. I make my own certainties, and I decide when and where I will eat, sleep, and wander. I also decide who I allow to get close to me. Being a stray is about your own personal control over your life, rather than blindly being pushed around by those humans." His tone was quiet and a dark hint lied under the rumbling, "While I see nothing wrong with exploring your territory, it still seems to me that, coming from you, it's just an excuse for your poor sense of direction."

He glanced back at Lluven briefly, for even though the other hadn't openly admitted it, his aimless decision to follow Dhiren, coupled with his carefree sense of life made it somewhat obvious that the spotted tomcat had little to no clue of where he was going. He was also unusually trusting; although, quite a few cats around here seemed to be so.

The Somali's orange ears flicked in recognition of the area they were heading in, and he vaguely remembered there being a large set of buildings nearby; a university thing for humans. Even though the idea of multiple people being around upset him, he also knew that it sat on a large bit of land and that there were open fields and gardens away from the building that few students ever wandered around. An afternoon nap in one of those fields was a very tempting idea, and so he decided to make his way over there; not doubting that his companion would follow without question.

"For you to be following me so willingly, I guess it's safe to assume that you didn't have any destination in mind for today," Dhiren called back to him, diving off the wall again to follow the less-crowded sidewalks into the college campus, "Was this just a day of wandering for you? You should be making notes to yourself about what your pass; it's a pain to have someone who doesn't know where they're going follow you around, you know." True to the nature of cats, the somali tom was beginning to grow curious about Lluven. The small spotted cat really didn't seem to have any destination set for today or for his own future. Dhiren wondered just how new to the streets the other cat really was; perhaps he was actually loved by his owner and wasn't used to being on his own yet. What a strange contradiction that would make for him.

A lot to learn.

Lluven hadn't expected that, but coming from the cat that had just successfully growled something unmannerly every second sentence, perhaps he shouldn't have been so surprised. As the other jumped onto a high wall, the Savannah considered following suit in case he planned to drop to the other side, but promptly decided it'd be too much. He had also learned, over time, that it was easier to speak to someone's side than their backside, and leaping onto the narrow wall would force him to do just that.

At what just seemed like a prideful outburst to him, Lluven chuckled a little. He noticed that there was a bit of an insult pointed in his direction, but he paid it no mind.

"I was always under the impression that the world was bigger than oneself," he mused aloud, almost as if talking to himself. "You can have full control over your life, but ultimately it's others who dictate whether or not you belong. There are those in charge of territories, and those who decide whether or not they like you. Those kinds of things are always out of our control, am I wrong?"

He said nothing about humans. He could tell that the other had a lack of respect for them, and their clashing ideals would do nothing to remedy the current situation. If it ever came up again, perhaps, though he doubted the Somali would ever understand.

As the cat dived off the other side of the wall, Lluven took his time and lept after him with a sort of street grace, his tail flicking after him. The big buildings rose above them like monsters reaching up to pierce the skies, and as he puttered up to catch up they reflected the sun's glare painfully into his eyes. He blinked to recover as he spoke in reply, his jesting tone gracelessly contrasting with the other's darker speech patterns.

"I wouldn't be following you if I knew where I was going," he laughed, though he seemed to swallow the comment carefully. "Worry not, though, Sir Captain, I have been taking notes."

Dhiren paused a bit, waiting for the smaller tom to climb over the wall and catch up. Of course, he didn't look for Lluven, and instead disguised the waiting stop as if he were looking for something in the distance. He scoffed at the other Tom's words though and turned to continue walking again when he heard the other approach. "Those things are no completely out of your control," He growled, tilting his ears back and glancing at Lluven again, "in the end, I decide whether I'll be submitted to such rules. By choosing not to hold company with other, I don't have to worry whether other cats like me or not; whether they feel I belong."

Keeping himself low to the ground, the Somali prowled across an open courtyard and up a hill, finally coming to rest beneath the branches of a tall tree. From this position, he could keep an eye on the activity around the university and enjoy a nice, cool nap in the shade. Plopping down against the trunk, amber eyes rose to meet Lluven's gaze again and he flicked his ears at the teasing nickname sent his way. "Living your life worrying about how others perceive you is a waste of time." Folding his hands behind his head, Dhiren tilted back a bit and closed his eyes, "Anyway, seems like this is the end of the road for you. I plan to spend the afternoon here." Laid out across the ground beside him, the tom's fluffy tail curled up a few times before laying still in the grass again.
