Terisa tried to readjust the pot she was carrying to a more comfortable position, but the reality was that no matter how she carried the pot of stew, it was always going to poke into some part of her uncomfortably. Not to mention that it was sharding heavy! What had made the headwoman think that the young girl could possibly carry this up to the sick dragonrider's quarters was beyond Terisa. But she had been far too nervous to tell the headwoman no, so she had simply taken an exceedingly long time pushing it up several staircases.... The other trouble was that the pot was so round that it was pretty much impossible for the black-haired girl to see what was at her feet, and she was just so worried that she would tr- "Ah!

To put it shortly, and to make matters much worse, Uuni had just gotten out of a shower. Clean and happy and loving the cool air of the deep inner-Weyr, Uuni was thankful she had only indoor chores left to last her the day. She'd gotten a short span of time off with the excuse she had smelled awful before and she'd be beet red if she continued to work outside.

She'd been walking down the hall with wet hair when it happened. In hindsight, she should have seen it coming. A tiny little thing with a large pot and her luck? Yes, it was bound to spill on her.

Still, when the hot soup splashed down and the girl stumbled, Uuni couldn't help but to shriek, "Shards!" and leap out of the way. It didn't do much good. There were no heroic saves, and no, 'are you okay?'s.

Instead, she stood there, wide-eyed with Faranth-knows what kind of soup gettig her feet and legs sticky and a young, clumsy girl who had managed to hit the floor the same of the pot. (fin)

Despite the pain in her knees and elbows from hitting the stone, one thing that Terisa could be positive about was that no one had seen her trip. No embarrassing explanations, and maybe she could sneak in and get more stew without the headwoman noticing.... Yeah, that would be a great idea! Then this whole thing would have just never happened.... Smiling a bit to herself with this master plan in her mind, the girl set the pot on the ground and pulled herself up to her feet, and find a rather soupy looking woman standing in front of her. Shards!

Opening her mouth for a moment, the candidate tried to think of something to say, but nothing but shock was going through her mind. She closed her mouth again, and then knew that she needed to say something, and so once again she opened it, looking much like a fish, she was sure. Finally being able to stutter out something, the girl said, "I-I-I'm soooooo sorry, ma'am. I-I didn't m-m-mean to!" The girl's dark eyes could do nothing but stare at the woman's legs covered in probably still fairly hot stew.... Oh by Faranth's shell, she was going to be in so much trouble! (c)
Finally being able to get her mind functioning at a pace faster than a groundbug, Terisa looked about herself for something to wipe up the mess, but she had absolutely nothing on her except her clothes. And even then, it was rather a hot day and so she had nothing on but a long work tunic. Realizing that she had to do something, she finally raised her eyes up to the woman's and said, "I-I'll g-go g-g-et a cloth...." But just as Terisa turned to run off back to the closest washing room, she realized that she had somehow moved in front of the stewpot, and now it connected harshly with her shins and she tumbled over it onto the ground on the other side. "Oof!" That was stupid.... (f)

Had she not been too busy hissing between her teeth from the pain, she might have been a little more helpful. After a few seconds, however, it started to subside, leaving only the numb feeling of having been touched by something hot.

She didn't think she had any severe burns, but it was certainly uncomfortable. When the girl was about to go get a cloth, Uuni mouthed a few words. "I don't think. . . " before the girl made another clumsy move.

Was this natural? "Uh. . . " It was probably the most inspiring thing she'd said all day, and all she could really do was watch. What did you do in a situation like this?

"Do you need some help?" she asked after a while. Actually, that was kind of a stupid question. Casting the girl a slightly unsure look, she took the pot and slid it out of harms way. This was going to be a mess to clean up if she ever saw anything. "Kind of clumsy, aren't you?" she asked with a grin, hoping it would lighten the mood. (fin)

As Terisa sat on the ground, trying to clear the stinging pain from her mind to think clearly, the words that the woman had spoken registered with her, and she felt even more foolish that she had been going to rush off when the woman didn't want her too. Looking at her knees, which were stinging the worst now, the tanned girl was relieved to find that it was only some scuffing that was causing the stinging. She would still be able to stand at the Hatching, and still be able to get her chores done. Well, the second part wasn't such a relief, but it was part of what being a candidate was.... (c)
Her attention moved away from her own wounds when the woman spoke again, and Terisa once again stared open-mouthed, unable to think of what to say, "Uh...." Not wanting to be more of a trouble than she already had been, the girl scrambled to her feet, wincing a bit when she bumped her right knee in her haste to stand. "N-no, thank you, I-I'll be fine...." Terisa's dark eyes remained on the ground, but her cheeks visibly reddened at the woman's remark about her clumsiness. Looking up briefly to survey the mess she had made, the black haired girl nodded and mumbled, "Yes ma'am, I-I'm very sorry.... I-I should get something to clean this up...." The headwoman was going to have a fit, that she was.... The real question was, was it more important to get stew to the rider or clean up this mess first. The truth was though, that the possibly burned woman in front of her still needed to be taken care of, and then maybe she wouldn't get into as much trouble.... "I-I should really get something for your legs ma'am...." (fin)

With all her stuttering and the eyes that darted around, Uuni was having a hard time thinking that the clumsy girl would be fine. She cast her a skeptical look and an even more confused frown when the girl blushed. Had she said something that upsetting?

Kids were so sharding strange. She didn't understand how they functioned at all. "Yeah, that might be good," she answered when the girl suggested getting something to clean up the mess, but then she went off again.

"Maybe you should sit down or something first?" she offered instead. "You look like you're going to pass out or go into shock or something."

Looking down at her legs, she wrinkled her nose. "Cool cloth should do the trick. But, maybe you should wait here?" With the clumsy girl's seeming luck, she'd end up limbless by the time she got back. "Really. . . just sit and wait and make sure no one dies by slipping." Casting another slightly confused look back, she started down the hall. Would the child even be there by the time she got back? In some ways she hoped not, but she probably would be just to spite her. (fin)

At the woman's suggestion of sitting down, Terisa looked up to her suddenly in confusion. She was a weyrbrat as far as this woman knew and still she was being so kind. Most adults in the Weyr, in Terisa's experience at least, had just ordered her around and when she made a mess of something, she was just ordered to clean it up. Perhaps that wasn't how all the adults in the Weyr were, maybe that was just how some of them were. Or maybe it was the heat, that seemed like a possibility as well. The Ista born girl remembered how grouchy people had gotten during the hot days of the summer, so maybe that was the problem for the most part. In any case, Terisa was eager to take up the woman on the suggestion, and plopped herself down on the stone steps. (c)
She did feel a bit lazy just sitting there, but the woman's suggestion that she make sure no one tripped on the spill was a good one, and the girl happily stood guard. Even if she had already injured one person, she could at least do her best to make sure no one else fell victim to her clumsiness. And maybe if the woman was the one to get the cleaning supplies, Terisa wouldn't get in trouble for spilling! She still had the matter of the hungry rider, but she would deal with that with her master plan as soon as this mess was cleaned up. In the mean time, she would stand - well, sit - watch and do a sharding good job of it too!

Kind. . . well, indirectly maybe. If kind meant 'finding an excuse to get out of the girl's presence', then yes, she was being kind. Uuni took her sweet time when she got to a place where she could retrieve towels. The water from the inner underground lakes was cool and felt wonderful on her burned legs. She tied a few of these around the burned areas and made her way back.

When asked what had happened, she merely shrugged and answered, "Some girl spilled a vat of hot stuff everywhere."

It was probably half of a candlemark later before Uuni came back, and the hot soup was liable to have cooled enough to mop up. Taking one of the towels from her shoulder, she tossed it told the nervous child and persisted to drop the next one into the mess. She couldn't believe that the girl had stayed there all this time.

"Where were you taking this anyway?" she asked in a desperate hope to start conversation. She didn't know what else to do, and she very much disliked the feeling that silence brought. (fin)

Feeling a bit odd simply sitting there, Terisa tried to concentrate on listening for footsteps, but it seemed that she had run into the one person who felt like wandering this hallway at this time.... What luck did she have?? She also started wondering if the woman was even going to come back, and she made a deal with herself that if she didn't come back within a candlemark, the weaver girl would go brave the headwoman to clean up the mess.... Thankfully, the footsteps that suddenly came to her ears were the woman returning, and she smiled almost cheerfully at her. For some reason it seemed that committing the worst mishap she could around the woman had removed some of her nervousness. What worse could really happen? She grabbed the towel that was tossed to her, and started to quickly scoop all the stew into one area. At the woman's question, Terisa looked over quickly and the stuttered out, "Oh, I-I was taking it to a sick dragonrider up this way...." Biting her lip, she hoped that this didn't get her into more trouble, since she probably should have revealed that sooner, since the poor man was probably rather hungry by now.... (fin)

Uuni gave a heavy sigh. Why hadn't anyone come to look for the girl yet? She debated sending the girl off to go get another thing of stew to take, but she didn't really want to clean this up by herself, so she remained in the area.

"I guess we better hurry it up, then," she muttered lightly and pulled one of the wet towels she'd had around her legs to help clean an area that had more or less been removed of the worst of things. "You might want to request a different task or something when you head back; this seems a bit much for you." And they had a food shortage as it was, so they really didn't need it going all over the floor.

With two of them working, it took them a lot less time than it would have otherwise. That didn't mean it didn't take them far, far too long for her tastes. There were quite a lot of dirty towels in the pot where there had once been soup, and giving a look at it and the girl, Uuni decided on the safer course of action.

"You run ahead and tell them what happened, and I'll bring this along behind so someone can get these towels cleaned." That should have been an easy enough task for the girl to handle, right? Right. (fin)

"We had better hurry it up, then." Terisa nodded at the statement and moved her hands as quick as she could to gather up all the little bits of stew and scoop it all up into the pot. Her goal had been to clean up as much as possible so this woman, whose job was not to clean up her messes, didn't have to, but between the two of them, the stew was eventually cleaned up, much to the candidate's relief. She was a bit embarrassed at the woman's frank statement that she wasn't up to carrying stew pots, but it was true and she had known it from the beginning, "I-I know, b-but the Headwoman scares me, a-and I can't tell her th-that I'm not strong enough to carry these things...." Kicking at a pebble on the ground, Terisa's eyes were lowered and her cheeks were a lovely shade of red. (c)
Looking back up to the woman when she spoke again, the girl nodded, not all that enthusiastically, since that meant admitting her mistake to the headwoman.... Despite that, she knew that she had to own up to her mistake, and if that meant a few extra hours of dung hauling, maybe it would make her more careful next time.... Gulping once more, she started ahead of the woman, headed towards the kitchen, and trying to be careful not to trip again. (fin)
