She could hear little but the sound of her thudding heartbeat, and her throat was dry. Her hoof on the left front was sore - she must have had a thorn or stepped on a shard in her frantic, panicked scramble. Her hair was matted, and her sides scratched in several places. Tangled in rope-thick vines and moss as she was at the moment, her terror of a few minutes past had ebbed into a dull anxiety as her reason came back to her slowly.
She absently began to nibble at the vines that bound her, as she tried to recall what it was that had brought her here. She remembered running, stumbling, scrambling through the woods, in between trees, twigs scratching.. she tried to remember why she had run, and felt a new wave of fear at the thought that whatever she had run from might still be behind her. One vine broke off at her gnawing, and she began on another one.
She remembered that she had fallen.. "fallen asleep?" her mind suggested. Yes, she had fallen asleep - and upon wakening, had seen fit to run. Where was she?
Another vine broke off, and her left hind had come free. She used it to scratch at the tangle that went around her neck, and tried to pull her head out of it. Looking around, she realised she couldn't recognise where she was. As a matter of fact, she had a feeling that this was part of the reason why she had begun to run on awakening. How had she come to be in a strange wood? Had she sleep-walked? She was anxious to know.

With a start, she realised she could remember nothing before the waking.

After a visit to his father and sister, Kanobi once again left feeling something close to inadiquacy. The opposite personalities between the male and his father, along with the elder's pointed words and criticisms, seemed to sharpen as the days went on.
He was on a quiet walk when, much to his suprise, he stumbled upon a brightly colored female in a tangle of vines. She looked a down right mess. "Excuse me," he asked in his soft voice, "would you care for some help with that?"

Sheila's head snapped up at the voice, and she saw a male. She couldn't see him very well except through the corner of her eye, and her hind hoof was still stuck in the moss about her neck. She was wary because she was so helpless, but his voice was gentle.. and she was in no position to refuse his help.
"If you please," she replied, and cringed at her voice. She had run herself hoarse, it would seem. She cleared her throat and continued.
"I'd be grateful if you could help me get some of this off," she said.

Bowing his head respectfully, and shyly, he walked forward and became biting down on the vines until the female was free. "Are you hurt?" He asked once the finale vine was broken, backing away from the skittish female slightly.

She was free! Sheila stretched her neck out and found it stiff, but unhurt. She turned to the male and noticed that he was some distance off.
"Thank you," she said sincerely. "My sides are scratched up and my muscles are stiff, but I seem to be fine otherwise," she nodded. She was not entirely sure she wanted to talk about her loss of memory yet - perhaps it would be temporary...
"My name is Sheila," she said, and frowned very slightly. How had she remembered that?
She turned around to face him, and her left hoof sent her a reminder. "Oh!" she exclaimed, looking down at it in annoyance. "Except for that."

Kanobi nodded. She looked all right from his view. The scratches looked superficial. How had she gotten herself in that mess in the first place?
"Shiela. It is an honor. I am Kanobi." His already bowed head went lower, snapping up when he heard her acknowledge a wound. "What is it?" He asked, walking forward again in desire to help.

"It's not much, I have something in my hoof.." she trailed off, watching Kanobi step forward. She fought a reaction to bolt, leaning her body slightly away from him.

She told herself to take another look at him. "See how gentle his voice and manner are. He doesn't look dangerous, does he?" said a voice in her head. "I don't know, it could all be an act. Who knows what I was running from? And why's he being so helpful anyway?" she thought in reply. The voice in her head responded with a chuckle. "Why don't you ask him and find out?".

Sheila puffed a sigh. Realizing that Kanobi was still waiting for her, she lifted her left front foot off the ground and extended it towards him.

"So.." she began uncomfortably. "Do you make it a habit, helping out damsels in distress?" she asked, her hoof still in mid-air.

Kanobi paused when Sheila leaned away, hanging his head when she stopped talking. He was terribly shy around females, except around those who needed help, but with this female's skittishness, he hung back.
Sighing in relief when she held her hoof back out, he quickly came forward to inspect it, ears perking at the question. "Actually, yes, but it depends on the stress, and it's not only damsels I help." He smiled bashfully. "I'm rather what you would call a healer. I help others when they get hurt or sick."

"A healer?" This was intriguing, somehow. For the moment, she decided to put her wariness aside. She was curious, and he didn't seem to pose a threat at the moment. She watched him as he inspected her hoof.
"So you.. know what to do when someone is hurt - which leaves to eat and thins of that nature? Or does it go deeper?"
"Mind and memory is what you're getting at, hmm?" went the voice.

Kanobi shrugged. "Something like that. Certain foods are helpful when ingested. If it's your skin, chewing a plant and placing it on a wound can help too." He cringed slightly when he found what was bothering her leg. A small twig had lodged itself in the groove of her hoof, jamming up into the skin. He bit down on the small piece sticking out and gave a swift yank, standing to show Sheila what it was.

"That's interesting," she ventured, in response to his description of a healer's job. She saw him cringe at her hoof, and began, "What is-- oof!" she bit down on her teeth to keep from squealing as he yanked it out, but her hoof seemed to feel a little better.
She looked up at Kanobi, and gave a single snort of laughter. If it hadn't been for the fact that he'd helped ease her pain so much, the sight of an adult male with a tiny twig in his mouth, looking at her with the peaceful, calm expression that seemed to occupy Kanobi's face most of the time, would have set her rolling on the forest floor with laughter.
"Thank you," she managed to say.

Kanobi smiled gently. With a toss of his head, he threw the stick away. "My pleasure." He wondered why her lips were still pressed together. It shouldn't be painful anymore. She was probably laughing at him wanting to be a healer. His head sunk slightly, eyes casting to the side. He spoke to cover his awkwardness. "Your leg should feel better soon. The wound is shallow, just in a sensitive spot."

Oops, he'd noticed. Sheila ducked her head down to hide her expression and focused on testing her hoof again. "It does feel better," she remarked. Her eyes flicked up briefly, and noticed that his were avoiding her. Had she offended him? Perhaps she had, by showing mistrust. She was sorry, but felt it inevitable - she couldn't have done otherwise. She flicked her eyes back up and tilted her head, observing him.
"I'm sorry if untangling me interrupted you on some task..." she said, breaking the silence.

Nodding slightly, his gaze went no higher than Sheila's chest. Even she, though he'd been able to help her, thought he was silly for being a healer.
"Task? Not at all." He said reather gloomily. "I was just visiting someone." He cocked his head slightly to glance up at Sheila, looking quickly back down again. "If I may, how did you get yourself in such a tangle anyway?"

It was Sheila's turn to avert her eyes. She focused on a hanging leaf somewhere beyond Kanobi's flank. Her eyes wandered absently over the striking patterns on his coat.
"I.." she hesitated, unsure of what she wanted to say. She could not come to accept that she could not remember anything.
"I got lost," she said finally. "I must have blacked out.. when I came around, I didn't know where I was.. I ran.." her heart beat faster and her eyes widened slightly at the memory. Her head twitched to and fro as she relived it in her mind.
"I don't know what I was running from.." she blurted. "There's something in the forest.. I don't know what it is.. or there was something..." she trailed off, her breath catching.
Fire... what was it? Crimson? Red? No, it wasn't fire, it was.. the brief flash of a memory fizzled out, and left her lost. She couldn't stand the bleakness, she couldn't stand the unnamed fear.
"Kanobi.." she said, finally. "Help me, please.."
