M'al

Name: M'al
Age: 22
Sex: Male
Orientation: Homosexual
Craft: Dragonrider
Rank: Junior Weyrling

Physical Description: Standing at the grand height of 5’3’’, M'al is far from the most… well… physically imposing person around. It’s possible that he could be muscular someday, but he tends to avoid actual physical labor. He has wavy dark brown hair, cut just below his earlobes; a bit longer than what is fashionable, he admits, but… eh. He likes it, and that’s what’s important. He’s built more for speed rather than stamina or pure strength. His eyes are gray. His teeth are, by far, his worst feature, being all crooked and stained.

Well, after a Turn of living in the Weyr, M'al has actually developed some muscle. Hurray! He can no longer qualify as 'skinny' and instead could be aptly described as 'lean', with a nice layer of muscle.

Personality: He’s… err… well, he’s a flake in many ways. He doesn’t take very much seriously and, what he does take seriously, isn’t generally very serious. Dodging responsibility and avoiding blame are two things he lives for. Well, there’s also booze, but we don’t talk about that. That'll come up more in the future. Being a relatively clever young man, he has figured out that the best way to be clever is to pretend to be about as intelligent as your average rock. And the best way to do that is to pretend to be completely open about everything. No one looks for secrets if they don’t realize that those secrets exist, yes? Not to mention, by being so open and all that, other people tend to trust him a good deal more than they should.

He’s rather manipulative, using whatever he can to get other people to do his work for him. Well, some of it, anyway. Like heavy lifting and whatnot. He delights in ridiculously circuitous plans and plots. Mostly, he delights in proving how clever he is. When his ‘plots’ fail (which is often, because he has the attention span of a concussed duckling), he generally sneaks off somewhere to sulk and complain and possibly nurse a bottle of booze.

In a rare dichotomy, he is happy in a group or on his own. When in a group, he prefers to be the center of attention. He does not, however, make a particularly good leader, since leadership comes with responsibilities. Honestly, he’s much better at a supporting role, one where he gets the joy of being important, but not so much that he’s too frightened by the responsibility of it all.

Other/Talents: He has a good singing voice. Not OMG amazing, but it has potential. He’s also intelligent, even if he doesn’t seem to have much common sense. He’s a bit like a terrier with OCD; if he sees something that doesn’t fit, he’ll keep pulling and pulling at it, regardless of the outcome. He is, however, quite good at acting.

On a sidenote, he is red-green colorblind, a fact that occasionally comes back to haunt him. It is not severe (the exact form is green-weak, deuteranomaly); it's not as if he'll mistake, say, a Green for a Blue or something. He also possesses all the writing skills of a drunken beluga on a trampoline during an earthquake. Reading and writing are both very difficult for him.

History

What hasn’t he been? If you listen to Mal’s stories, he’s been an orphan, a b*****d, a motherless child, the only son of a secret Lord Holder, one son among many of farmers… he’s a liar, plain and simple, rewriting his history so often that it’s possible that even he doesn’t remember the truth. He’s gotten so used to telling the lies that the truth hardly even matters. The truth is a good deal less… glamorous.

He’s not sure who is father is, in all honesty. It doesn’t matter much either. His mother was a woman of… questionable character and even more questionable morality. In the manner of mothers everywhere, she insisted that her son was special and worked hard to secure a future for him. Eventually she managed to catch attention of a Harper and ranted about how great her son was going to be. The Harper listened politely, possibly only because he was unable to think of a good way to get this insane woman out of his way. Still, he had to admit, the boy had talent and he eventually agreed to take him in. This was when Mal was twelve.

At first, Mal was quite content with this new Harper life of singing and attempting to play instruments. (Ironically enough, he’d never gotten the hang of the harp or any other instruments; mostly, other Harpers would eventually take the poor instrument away from him in pity). But, after a while, he began to grow… well… bored of it all. Sure, it was hilarious the first time to put salt in the klah, but that sort of thing got boring eventually. Besides, the amount of attention he was starting to attract was rather disquieting… Eventually, he got to thinking about what a Harper really did.

It wasn’t all singing silly songs and entertaining people. It was… well… teaching people too. And, suddenly, Mal realized that he may very well be responsible for the education of others. And the thought terrified him. He quickly disappeared to avoid that fate. That was when he was eighteen.

...

Yeaaaah... in retrospect, it probably wasn't the brightest thing to do. Traveling around as a lone teenager is pretty stupid. He figured that out---eventually---and settled down in a Hold under a fake name. Occasionally things would go missing in his presence----small things, like bubbly pies or perhaps the occasional redfruit---but he had always been a decent actor. Being Searched a huge relief, actually, since people were starting to put the pieces together.

Redhath

User Image

Blue Redhath is the finest blue you will ever lay eyes on, and don’t you forget it. Of average size, Redhath looks smaller than he actually is. Don’t you dare ever try to bring it up, though, it’s not his fault he’s built much more delicately than the others. Of course, just because he looks fragile doesn’t mean he actually is. You’ll have to take his word for it, because Redhath rarely feels the need to prove himself. He knows he’s bodily able and he assumes his word is enough for everyone else as well.

Redhath is all grace in everything he does; the way he talks, the way he moves, even the way he fights Thread has already been played out ten times in his mind. Ten steps ahead, he’s exceptionally hard to trip up. He’s also exceptionally hard to trust, even for his rider. His rider is the only person Redhath would never intentionally harm, but friends are not something that come easily to this blue. He’s usually only looking out for number one and has no issue selling someone out or throwing them under the bus.

Tripping Redhath up, while hard to do, is not impossible and will result in one of the angriest blues you have ever met. He'll be defensive and nasty, each and every quip sharp and below the belt. Just because he won’t prove how perfect he is doesn’t mean he’s not perfect. Disrespect is something that drives him up a wall (though he certainly isn’t above disrespecting others), as is general stupidity. He will require his rider to keep up with him and has little patience when his rider doesn’t.

Flights do not interest Redhath. It probably has something to do with knowing he’s the best, so why should he have to do it mentality. He’s not an insecure dragon; he’s completely sure he’d get chosen by the female should he ever chase her. He’s also completely certain that she’s not worthy of him. It’d take a lot of convincing to get this boy to fly and there would be quite a huge fuss if he wasn’t chosen, so his rider really ought to watch that minefield.

Why Me?

Redhath's "too cool for you" attitude makes him hard to get along with, but not so hard if you've got a similar mindset. This blue needs someone who is ready and willing to be his co-conspirator, and someone to take the fall whenever he slips up. Confidence and pride are key to Impressing him, both of which Mal has demonstrated again and again. Redhath has found someone who can match his wit and his tongue in Mal and he can appreciate Mal's manipulative skills. He thinks highly of himself and Redhath thinks highly of His, as well, so it only makes sense that he Impressed to someone he could hold as his equal.

Redhath seyz grrrr.

Arabian and Legend

The Arabian

The Arabian horse is a breed of horse that originated in the Middle East. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most easily recognizable horse breeds in the world. It is one of the oldest horse breeds, with archaeological evidence of horses that resemble modern Arabians dating back 4,500 years. Throughout history, Arabian horses from the Middle East spread around the world by both war and trade, used to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance, and good bone. Today, Arabian bloodlines are found in almost every modern breed of riding horse.

The Arabian developed in a desert climate and was prized by the nomadic Bedouin people, often being brought inside the family tent for shelter and protection. This close relationship with humans has created a horse breed that is good-natured, quick to learn, and willing to please. But the Arabian also developed the high spirit and alertness needed in a horse used for raiding and war. This combination of willingness and sensitivity requires modern Arabian horse owners to handle their horses with competence and respect.

Red Hare

Red Hare (traditional Chinese: 赤兔馬; simplified Chinese: 赤兔马; pinyin: Chìtù mǎ) was Lü Bu's horse during the Three Kingdoms period of China. Historical records only mention the horse when Lü Bu temporarily became a subordinate of Yuan Shao, where he charged and defeated the armies of Zhang Yan while riding the Red Hare. Additionally, the annotated Cao Cao's biography in Sanguo Zhi also contained the phrase: "Among men, Lü Bu; among horses, Red Hare" (人中呂布,馬中赤兔) when describing Lü Bu's prowess in battle.

In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, the life of the Red Hare was fleshed out. It was originally a treasured horse of Dong Zhuo, but at Li Su's suggestion, he gave it to Lü Bu to persuade him to murder his stepfather Ding Yuan, and join Dong Zhuo. Red Hare was said to be able to run one thousand li in a day (during the Three Kingdoms period, 1000 li would have equated to roughly 415.8 km or 258.2118 miles). It was of a uniform ashen red, with not a hair of another color. It measured ten spans from head to tail (8 ft. long) and from hoof to neck eight spans (nearly 7 ft. tall).

Hatching!

Wingsecond Kem
Arabian Egg
Ever clutch has its rebel, and the Arabian Egg is no exception. Not actually outside the Kiger Mustang Egg’s reach, the dark egg is tipped on its axis, pointing away from the rest of its clutch. The egg doesn’t actually give off any strong vibes, it’s just pointing the wrong way. The Arabian Egg is a bright mahogany and with a splotch of white at each end; each splotch of white has a crisp black ring circling it.

Wingsecond Kem
The Arabian Egg was still rattling away. It trembled, no one watching. Or, perhaps that wasn't entirely correct. The new hatchling still had most of the crowd's attention, but it seemed the candidates weren't about to be taken by surprise. They were quick learners. The egg gave one final shake before a large chunk of the shell gave way and a dark nose quickly followed suit. The dragon inside gave an annoyed snort and before long, it gave a great shove, revealing a petite dragon. He was very obviously blue, and very obviously slight.

Eyes whirling orange, the dragon pulled himself free and began to wobble towards the boys, the snarl on his face quite obvious.

Wingsecond Kem
There was someone getting close.

The delicate blue whirled on Jessan, eyes whirling red as the snarl became increasingly clearer. He did not anyone close to him! He struck out blindly, claws raking across the boy and no sooner did he strike did the Arabian retreat. He did not want anyone close. He could not trust anyone! He could not anyone, not anyone but His. He could not find his! He gave a pathetic squeak and jumped, as though he was surprised he made that noise. How could he make such a noise?

Straightening himself, the blue stood in front of all the males the picture of grace as eyes orange began to size them up, one by one. Not worthy. No. No. The dragon sighed, anger fading into general irritation. Where was His? This was wasting time! Plopping himself down, he gave the crowd another unimpressed look.

Malmine, your Redhath is tired of playing this stupid game. He wants to get out of here. He wants to eat and he wants no one else to touch him. The blue gave a sniff and raised his head haughtily. Malmine? I said now.

FerretPrince

And while Cordel was busy teaching someone a lesson, Mal was getting one of his own. While the Candidate continued to entertain thoughts of simply slipping away, a very new thing slipped into his mind.

Redhath.

Malmine, your Redhath is tired of playing this stupid game. He wants to get out of here. He wants to eat and he wants no one else to touch him

It was a strange mind, one all sleek and shiny, like steel. This was a mind that clicked away, always considering the outcomes of various things. Manipulative, sneaky, and thinking ahead far beyond the average. It was a mind much like Mal’s own, only…

Redhath wants to leave!

The voice was more imperious now and M’al stood up at the command, slowly making his way back to the front of the group in a daze. The most gorgeous Blue dragonet he had ever seen sat on the Sands, hissing at everyone to keep them away. Redhath was very upset… At least they could agree on something: they both wanted out. M’al reached out and touched the Blue. Redhath merely snorted and once again pointed out that he wanted to go OUT.

They are STARING, mine. And that one tried to touch Redhath! The dragon nudged his new bonded in mild annoyance, encouraging him to move. He did not have time to sit around and wait; he wanted out NOW. And M’al listened, moving with his dragon towards the meat tables, idly wishing he had paid more attention during Candidate lessons.
