=] This lesson will give you some useful sentences concerning family!

Mother 어머니
Mom 엄마
Father 아버지
Dad 아빠

Grandmother 할머니
Grandfather 할아버지

(Older) brother (when u r younger sister) 오빠
(Older) brother (when u r younger brother) 형
(Older) sister (when u r younger sister) 언니
(Older sister (when u r younger brother) 누나
(Younger) brother 남동생
(Younger) sister 여동생

Those were some family words xp
_______________

I am older than you.

나는 너보다 나이가 많다.
[I (am)] (than you) (older)

okay, there is more simpler word to describe (older) and it is 더 늙었다. (더 means more. just 늙었다 means "got old")
However, saying this in a conversation is extremely rude. If you say 너는 더 늙었다 (You are old) to a Korean female, you will get a bitchslap biggrin
So! 나이가 많다 is more useful. hehe

보다 means "than".
_______________

She is younger than him.

그녀는 그보다 어리다.
(she is) (than him) (young).

Expressing "younger" is sooo much easier! 어리다 basically means... younger xp just 어리다 means young.
However, because there is 그보다, it becomes "younger".
_______________

My older brother is shorter than me.

우리 오빠는 나보다 작다.
(My) (brother is) (than me) (short).

When you are talking about older family member, "my" becomes..."our" in english. 우리 means our. 내 means my.

작다 means short.
if you add 키가 infront of 작다 -> 우리 오빠는 나보다 키가 작다. , the sentence becomes more specific, because 작다 can mean "small" as well.
키가 literally means "height is".

when you want to say "tall", 크다 can be used smile
우리 오빠는 나보다 (키가) 크다.
Keep in mind that 크다 can also be big.
__________________

My younger sister is slimmer than my older sister

내 여동생은 우리 누나보다 날씬하다.
(my) (younger sister is) (my) (older sister than) (slim).

Notice how 내 is used for younger sister. 우리 is used for older sister smile

날씬하다 means slim. 뚱뚱하다 means fat.

For example, My dad is fatter than my mom.

우리 아빠는 우리 엄마보다 뚱뚱하다.

Next lesson will be on talking to elders....Ugh it will be a difficult one to make -_-

You're doing a good job. =D
I have a question, do you use 'my' if the sibling is younger than you and 'our' for someone who is older than you?

Also I have another Korean question, it has nothing to do with this lesson though. How do you know when to use 내/네?

And for your questions; yes, that is correct. '내' in front of youngers, '우리' in front of elders.
It is grammatically correct if you put 'our' (우리) in front of grandmother, mother, father, etc. but the word just sounds..awkward.
However, sometimes in poems or very formal or old Korean writings, 'my' (나의) in front of elders - 나의 is used, not 내 in this case.
However, since most of us are just learning informal Korean, the lesson only covered conversational Korean.

내/네...you mean you want to know about my/your? 내 means my, 네 means your, but is sort of formal way of saying it. If this wasn't what you meant, plz ask once more biggrin
Thank you sooo much for commenting!!!! I was wondering if I'm the only one active in this guild crying

Thank you~

oh, for '내' and '네' I was asking how you when to use? Is it just a polite way of speaking, or is it wrong to use it instead of 나의/너의 in sentences?
I originally learned 나의/너의, but when I receive e-mails from my friend she uses 내/네 in some of her sentences and 나의/너의 in others.
I tried asking her, but I did not understand the sentence where she was explaining it to me. :'(
oh how I wish I were born fluent in every language. emo

ohh 내/네 is just another way for saying 나의/너의, and it is absolutely okay to use 내/네. hmm but since 내 and 네 sounds extremely similar, most people use 내/네 only in writings =]

I only know the languages enough to create a decent conversation. I do not know enough to be even close to fluency. crying
Is grade 12 is the last year of high school?
