well hello
again
i have two pregant cherry barbs and one laid her eggs
apparantly they all died except one and it hatched
sometime ago
he is very small but my gourami and betta seem to want to eat him
as he is the only one left
i and making a tank jsut for him until he gets bigger
then i will re-introduce him to the tank
so i am curious on the temptature he shoud be at
i found that cherry barbs should be kept 72-75
is this the same for the baby
and hmmm if he eats the flakes
is that ok?
and oh does anyone know when he might get bigger?
thanks everyone smile

the same water temp should be fine
and of course its ok if he eats flakes! hes eating. always a good sign. i dont know how long he will take to grow. seems to me egg laying fry grow a bit slow.

ok i lookeit up on some websites
and most of them are saying that he is roughly 5 weeks old
so should i put him back in the tank or not?
PostPosted: Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:59 pm

well i really couldnt tell you when to put him back.
only you would know. is he big enough that he wont get eaten? his age really means nothing
its his size

oh ok that makes sense
hmmmm he will fit in almost everyones mouth
but he has survived all this time until i found him today
but i want to raise him
so i guess keeping him in his own tank for a while would be best. correct?
PostPosted: Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:18 pm

if you want him to live then yes raise him on his own.

he may have survived till you found him but im sure he would have gotten eaten eventually in the main tank. fish eat anything that they can fit in their mouth...and if he fits...he would have ended up a snack.

Lucky find! Generally the only reason people feed fry different food is because it can be tricky to get them to eat since they're so small and some fry need moving food. That's why it's okay to feed him flakes. As long as he'll eat it and it's fish safe, it's perfectly fine for him. Same with temp, whatever the adults are good with, he should be fine with. Times to raise the temps are when you have a sick fish on your hands usually.

yeh i know
tell me about it
but i was curious when the other two barbs lay their eggs should i move the eggs into the other tank or leave them

and how will i find them
i know they will lay them in the plants
but idk what to look for
will they guard them?
or should i just look for the eggs?

i dont know how barbs breed.
im assuming they drop them and forget

you should do some research into that

Well, do you know what the eggs look like? Probably little jelly blobs like most other fish eggs. Keep an eye out for them! Or they could be livebearers, so you'll just get babies and no eggs. It's worth researching if you wanna collect the babies.

UPDATE

ok he is doing really good
still in the 5 galleon all a lone
he is eating bigger food so i am happy
and his strip is fully noticable now
i think he might be a boy but i have to wait for his to mature (males are red where-as females are brownish)
he is slowly getting bigger
so now its a waitinggame

as for the other pregant barbs goes
i cant find a pic of their eggs to save my life so i am going to guess they are like the other ones and i am keeping my eyes open
cuz i want to save them and raise them
then just give them to my local pet store, its family owned so they take fish

Congratulations on everything going so well!

Though if you are really serious about breeding I'd advise you to set up a special breeding tank, since breeding egglayers in a community tank really is hell. Not many survive then, and transferring eggs is also pretty hard.
