The light of the early morning sun warmed the navy blue stallion’s coat as he emerged from the cave. As usual he stopped just outside the entrance and looked around for anything that was out of place in the area and just like every other day he found nothing amiss. He shook his head lightly and moved further out from the shelter that he and Fox had been staying in for nearly a week now.
His mentor and friend had been in pretty bad shape when they had first arrived but with each passing day she recovered a bit more. It had gotten to the point where he didn’t need to worry about her every second of every day. For some reason, the lack of need had not stopped him from doing just that however. He found his thoughts wandering back to the mare even during investigation. Why he didn’t know but part of him suspected that it had something to do with that isle. She never told him what she had been talking about and his ever curious mind wanted to know.
He turned his gaze back to the stony entrance of the cave. It was beginning to bother him that he couldn’t understand what was going on. Just what was it about all this that made all his logical reasoning useless?

Fox had woken before Lamb that morning, but had feigned sleep for a while longer, until she heard the stallion get up and move towards the cave entrance. What was once an easy silence between them had become fraught with tension..on her side for sure. The feelings, and the emotions she'd shown when she'd gotten injured had not gone away with time, in fact every time she looked at Lamb it was with affection.
There had been exactly one time in her life she'd felt this way, that had ended badly and taught her to rely mostly on herself. This shouldn't have happened. At all. She should have taught him to fight, to take care of himself and parted ways again. What would she even say to him, would he understand, reciprocate even? She raised her head off her front legs, looking at the cave entrance, standing slowly. There was a certain tightness still in her muscles, and the cuts to her face had started to itch as they healed more and more each day.
She walked outside, up to Lamb. Now all she had to do was face a larger challenge. Give me a gruelling training session any day.. she thought to herself as she looked up at the sky, seeing how the weather looked, sniffing at the air.
'Morning..' she said, well it was a start!

He watched as his mentor emerged and approached him. A smile lit up his dark features to see her. She still looked pretty bad with healing wounds dotting her body but it was better then when they had been open and bleeding. Much better.
"Morning Fox." He replied easily. There had once been a time when getting him to say just that would have been incredibly difficult. The time they had spent together had led him to speak more then what he would to others. Of course it still wasn't much and most moments were still filled with his silence.
"Alright?" His eyes wandered over her a few tmes. This question had started to become routine for him. If anything was wrong with her he wanted to know sooner rather then later. The faster he knew something the quicker he could find a solution.

She moved to his side; feeling exposed, small and raw against the larger stallion. He had come to her rescue after all, got her here and looked after her as she was healing. She should be trying to regain her footing, step back and tell him in no uncertain terms that just because she'd gotten injured it meant nothing. That was the big hurdle, the large stumbling block. She could not say or do anything towards that end because she didn't feel that way.
'Good morning Lamb.' she answered, a tight smile of her own on her face. She could blame her injuries for that at least, it was still sore to make expressions.
'You ask that every day you know.' she reminded him, but she didn't sound angry as she said it, nor weary for hearing the words. It meant, she hoped, that he cared for her. It would be easier to say something if that were the case.

He nodded his head firmly. He knew very well what he was doing and how frequently he did it. After all, he was the one asking. It would be a problem if he wasn't aware that he was asking something.
"Need to check." There was truth behind his words. While the need wasn't a physical one like food and drink it was one all the same. Checking on her physical state helped keep his mental state in order. He had no reason why her physical health weighed so heavily on his mind but it did. Perhaps one day he would find the reason for it.
This, however, he imagined to be wishful thinking. If there were a logical reason he was certain that he would have stumbled across it by now.

'Why? Does it matter to you greatly if I'm not? Do you care for me?' Fox faced him, the words bursting from her suddenly as if they could no longer be contained. She turned skywards before speaking again.
'You know, this, I never meant this to happen.' she shook her head. 'I was meant to be your mentor, that's all I wanted. Then I found myself wanting to see you again, to know how you were doing, if you'd grown. And you had, and grown well.' she looked at him again.
'I shouldn't have developed feelings for you. I do. I should have...I don't know.' she let out a noise of frustration.
'I think I love you, and it freaks me out because I don't even know if you're capable of understanding what that means beyond family love.'

Lamb blinked several times at the sudden storm of questions and other words from Fox. For once he was speechless because any words that good have come out had been lost somewhere between his vocal cords and his mouth. He had no clue as to what should be said, there was too much information to give a concise answer.
Standing statue still he did his best to repeat everything his mentor had just said in his head. The best course of action, he had decided, was to answer everything in the series that it had been presented to him. It took him a while to compile his answer in his mind but once it was settled his tail twitched and he looked Fox directly in the eye.
"It matters. Do care for Fox." He took a breath and offered a slightly nervous smile. "Don't understand...but...Fox is special to me...can't explain it, it's not rational...Fox just is..." That was all there was to it for him. He went quite again awaiting her response while reflecting a bit on what he had said.
He hoped she wouldn't be angry with him. What she seemed to be speaking of was all so emotional and Lamb simply could not understand those. He just hoped that Fox understood that.

Fox expected..she wasn't sure what. Maybe silence from him, which would have been usual. Or just a one word answer. Which would have frustrated her immensely right then because she needed more than that.
'You care..you know it's hard for me to know that? Outside of your family I'm sure I'm the one you've spent most time with, and I still don't know all that you're thinking.' she stared up at him, pale blue eyes searching into his.
'You're right Lamb..feelings aren't rational, it isn't logical for me to like you. I'm meant to be your tutor after all. I should have taught you and left you, gone travelling again. But I didn't, and I can't. You really have no idea what it means, for me to be saying all this to you.' she pressed her nose against his.
'If I am something to you, and you can't tell me in words, know that actions speak louder than those.'

Again he blinked. Was he being scolded, for being quiet? His mentor was right. She was the person he spent the most time with apart from his family. Of course, even his family didn't know what he was thinking all the time.
He was confused. He couldn't figure out why she was speaking in such a way. Very little of what she said made sense to him but what he did understand was that she seemed to know his confusion. He watched as she pressed her nose to his and listened carefully to what she said.
Lamb could not name the reason for it but something about the action just felt right. That in itself was difficult for him to accept but he tried not to question it. Slowly he pulled his head away only to move the side of his cheek down the side of her neck. Nothing about it seemed logical, so the only sensible realization would be that it was not meant to make sense. Keeping that in mind he rested his head at the base of her neck. It was just something he had to feel instead of thinking on.

Fox wasn't really scolding him, just letting the stallion know that sometimes it was hard to be his mentor, let alone his friend..let alone something more because of how little he communicated verbally. Most of the time she'd appreciated it, but matters of the heart were rarely implicit.
She closed her eyes as he moved his head, travelling, his hide warm against hers. Fox let out the tiniest of shivers, bottled feelings and emotions surfacing more as he continued to touch her, to stay right with her.
'Lamb..' she whispered his name, sliding her head along his neck, so that were locked in what could be called an embrace. She felt desire for him, a slowly warming heat but she kept it contained, not wanting to ask too much of him, and also not knowing what exactly he knew of male-female relations.

Now what?
Fox seemed pleased with the course of action he had taken but where did he go from there? This was all too knew for him. His mind was telling him that he should do something but nothing was giving him a clue as to what that something was. He felt warm but he couldn't figure out why and it was strange.
"...Fox?" He said leaving his head where it was. His eyebrows came together and his ears had gone back slightly in confusion. "What...do I do...?" He imagined that she would know and this didn't seem to be something that he was going to be able to examine from a distance. It didn't seem to be a tangible thing anyway.

Fox pulled back slowly, looking up and into his eyes.
'Well now..what do you want to do? The answer depends on what you actually know..' she nudged him again with her nose, a very playful look on her face, one he wouldn't have seen yet on her. She hoped she wasn't setting herself up for a fall, allowing herself to feel, and be open again only to have him walk away.
'What exactly did your parents impart on you about female-male relationships?' she smiled, her thudding a little. She really did feel a lot for him..but was wary of asking too much, going too fast.

He smiled at her as he gazed into her eyes. He didn't look away from them even as he thought out his answer. What did he want to do? He wasn't sure, just something. All he could tell was it was something that he had likely never experienced before since he had never felt like this before.
"Be nice to sisters...girls are different..." He answered finally. He had no idea what answer she was looking for but that was the only one he really had. What he didn't know was that the day he had left his father had been planning on telling him some very important information on the subject. It was too late, however, to go back now.

Fox gaped at him, then burst out laughing. When she'd composed herself she looked at Lamb, and gave a brief shake of her head.
'Nothing beyond that, really? Not even when you left me to go home, and then grew? Your mother, your father didn't pull you to one side and talk about relationships, nothing?'
She could maybe understand a young Soquili not knowing these things if they had not grown up with a family but he had...this meant she would have to speak about it. Which would be uncomfortable, as she would be speaking of things she expected them to one day..do.
