Aphismet and Rivener
and
Ebony Shade

Location: Ebony's house
Time: Early morning
Weather: Warm and sunny

"She's not gonna be terribly happy to see us at first, you know."

Aphismet sighed, rolling his eyes. Rivener had been saying the same thing every five minutes since they'd left their house. "Riv, if you're going to be such a downer, I'd rather you had stayed at home. Why are you coming along, anyway?! I thought you didn't like her at all!"

Riv frowned and crossed his arms, looking out the car window. "I want to say thank you for the present she got me," he replied.

"And email could have-"

"NO, I have to say thank you in person."

Tense silence reigned again. This conversation had happened over and over on the ride from Durem Caves North to Gambino. There was this one, and also the conversation about "while we're in Gambino, can we go see Alex and Zul?" that Rivener was always so eager to bring up, too. It had been a looooong drive, and much more tense and annoying than it should have been.

The Delaran's car left the main city area, and Aphismet glanced at street names, recalling a few from the map they'd looked up. "Ah, I think we're close. Can you give me directions, Riv?"

"Okay, but she's not gonna be terribly happy to-"

"RIVENER."

"Alright, alright, jeesh." The Scorpion threw up his hands in defense, glaring at his guardian for an instant before picking up the map they'd printed off the internet. Comparing street names, Rivener quickly found where they were and expertly navigated them towards the quaint, out-of-the-way two-storey house listed on the Guardian's contact sheet. "That should be it!" the Sigel declared, folding the print-out.

The car pulled into the driveway and stopped. The two males exited, Rivener with fists at his hips, red eyes appraising the home appreciatively, Aphismet with a covered dish of food as a gift. "Nice place," Riv announced, giving his stamp of approval as a future-Raevan-home even if it was completely meaningless for him to do so. It's not like Rivener was the Raevan Police, responsible to make sure all his kin was properly taken care of... Hmm, he'd started doing that quite a lot lately, hadn't he? Pondering this, the Sigel followed Aphismet up the steps absent-mindedly.

Aphi paid his charge no attention, figuring the Sigel was more than able to follow. Clearing his throat, Aphi pushed the doorbell.

"You know, she's not gonna be terribly-"

"RIVENER, oh my god, if you say that again I will leave you here, so help me."

Once again Rivener threw up his hands defensively, glaring at his guardian. It's not Riv's fault the stars had said Ebony didn't know Guardians knew where her house was!

Idly flipping through pages of news, the violet haired woman was enjoying a nice, leisurely morning curled up with the paper and a warm cup of coffee. Although still a bit groggy, the sleep melting slow from her eyes, Ebony was amazed at how much more relaxed she felt after a night of effortless sleep. A few nights actually. Ever since she'd gone on her one woman shopping spree she'd felt as if the weight on her was gone. Well maybe not gone, that was too much to hope for, but there was definitely less pressing upon her now than prior.

"Shop therapy..." the woman mused as she sipped from her cup, the idea tickling her so. She'd heard of it before, yet Ebony had never bought into it, thinking it to be just an excuse for women to spend tons of money they didn't have. That was until now. Now she knew the power of shopping! Or perhaps it was more of the power of shopping for others?

A soft, musical tune filled the silence then and interrupted her thoughts. 'Who could that be?' she wondered, laying her paper and mug down on the living room table. No family and few friends to speak of, the only one that was ever regularly seen on the lace white porch was the mail man. In fact that was whom she'd assumed was there now, possibly with a package of highly anticipated plants she'd ordered some time ago for the greenhouse. It was to her great shock and surprise to find something entirely different when she opened the door.

"Rivener? Aphismet?" asked Ebony as she looked between the two arguing males with a clearly confused expression. Was she dreaming? Hallucinating? "How...w-what are you doing here?!" She hadn't meant for it to sound as awful as her voice had conveyed then, it was that she just realized how unprepared she was for such an event. Standing there in her white tank and grey sweats, her hair down and untamed as of yet. Oh how she wanted to just slam the door, run upstairs and slap some makeup on!

As soon as the door opened, Aphismet lifted up the covered dish as a greeting, only getting about half-way up before the smile fell off his face and he blinked at his martial arts tutor with wide, confused eyes. In the next instant the chef glance over balefully at Rivener, who was staring right back at him with very smug-looking red eyes, smirking and motioning towards Ebony in a See? Told you so! way.

Sighing and rolling his eyes, Aphismet plastered his smile back on and cleared his throat. "Uhm, g-good morning, Ebony. I hadn't seen or heard from you in a while so I decided to pay you a visit. I b-brought food! You will like this, I hope: Chicken-broccoli casserole. It keeps well in the fridge and you can heat up portions as you like..."

"I think her question really meant How did you know where I live, Aphi." Riv's voice held that edge of superiority still, having been proven right. Ahhh, it felt good to be able to lord things over his guardian!

Aphi frowned over at the Sigel and sighed before turning his gaze back to the purple-haired woman. "Y-yes, well about that, your address was on the guardian contact sheet. We're all listed on there... S-so I figured it would be okay to, ah... d-drop by. Isn't it?" Fearing he had somehow crossed an impossible line, Aphi clutched the covered dish closer and furrowed up his brows. "We could go, if now's a bad time. I wouldn't want to impose or anything..."

Rivener hadn't yet found the opportunity to thank Ebony for his gift, much too busy basking in how RIGHT he'd been. Crossing his arms and looking as smug as anything, the Scorpion simply looked at Ebony Shade. He knew what she was going to say next. Maybe not word for word, but the gist of it. He was getting the hang of this star-listening thing!

The Brit was slightly dumbfounded still by the unexpected visit, her mouth slackened open and silent in her inability to push words through it. Words that were still lost as grey eyes followed towards the offered dish of chicken and broccoli. And although the crimson black Sigel was correct in his presumption of her question, it also arose more questions. Like why was Riv here? Last she knew, the Scorpion wasn't her biggest fan.

"That's not it at all Rivener! I, ah, I just wasn't expecting anyone today and I'm just surprised to see you both and well...what I mean is..." Heavens above what did she mean? It wasn't like the woman to be at a lost for explanations nor was she easy to catch off guard, yet these two had REALLY caught her off guard now and it totally threw her for a loop.

With the coveting of the dish and the look of departure in his actions, Ebony instantly felt incredibly shamed in her unintended rudeness. Immediately she opened the front door wide to allow them entrance as she desperately clawed at her messy violet strands. "No no! I'm terribly sorry! Please do come in!"

"Umm..." There was a few moments of contemplation after she'd shut the door once the two were in. With a quick little bow, "Please excuse me for a few moments. I'll be right back. Make yourselves comfortable." And with that the woman was a flash of purple running upstairs. Make-up might not be an option at this moment, but Ebony would be damned if she'd play the role of host in her sleepwear!

Aphismet smiled sheepishly as he stepped inside, still somehow thinking that he shouldn't have come. Ebony seemed so unprepared, startled... disbelieving that someone could even BE here, it looked like! The chef cleared his throat and looked around for a moment, searching for a place to deposit the casserole. He finally settled on an end table near a couch, and turned back to Ebony-

...Just in time to see her rush upstairs, telling them to be patient for a little while. "Ah, o-okay." Running a hand through his chalk-colored hair, Aphi walked over to the sofa and sat, glancing around the room. Rather neat, and well furnished... A cute place.

"Hn," Rivener sounded, smirking smugly, sitting on the same sofa with his arms crossed, looking like he'd won something. His red eyes glanced sideways at his guardian expectantly.

Aphismet caught sight of his ward and sighed, rolling his eyes. "Alright, fine, Rivener, you were right. There. Are you happy now?"

The Scorpion let out a breathy chuckle and nodded, relaxing in the seat and uncrossing his arms. Finally he let his own gaze wander as Aphi's was doing, although Rivener noticed other things instead. It smelled of coffee. That flower vase was empty: why? The TV was dusty. The pattern on these sofas was the kind that draws you in, makes you stare...

"Is it really ok for us to be here?" Aphi asked, breaking the silence and pulling Riv out of the zoning-out he was starting to slip into.

"Yeah, it is. She was just startled, I'm sure. Relax, man."

The pair sat quietly, until Riv grabbed the remote and flicked on the television, exploring the channels leisurely.

And while the previously surprised host was busy ripping a hurricane like storm in her closet, the two guests might also note the other unusual things in the Shade home. Like how the tv was not the focus of the room, all the furniture situated in a manner to have the fireplace (which was obviously not in use now due to the weather) as it's center. Or how a big, black grand piano was nestled next to the kitchen bar making it impossible for stools to be placed there for people to eat like it would have been in a normal home.

They might have also noticed the lack of personal photographs showcasing friends and family. If there was anything in the room with a frame it merely held a painting of some unknown artist as Ebony was not quite the artistic type when it came to paints and such. The room in whole held an aura as if it were fighting with itself, nothing really matching and yet feeling as if it should. Like two people playing mix and match with their possessions when first moving in together. It was an odd feeling to get especially when the visitors knew this woman lived alone.

It wasn't long before Ebony came dashing back down the stairs, hair pulled up in that signature ponytail and wearing simple jeans and a black tank top replacing her previous white one. Stepping off the last step, she tried to compose herself as best she could before addressing the two again. "I'm terribly sorry about that, but I felt it inappropriate to be wearing my pajamas while you were here. Ah..." She'd noticed the Scorpion was channel flipping. Slightly amused, "...I see you found the tellie all right Rivener. No cable I'm afraid, since I don't watch much." Turning to face Aphismet as well, "Can I get you two anything? I have some freshly brewed coffee. Oh, didn't you say something about a casserole?" She felt like she was babbling, but she was still trying to get use to the fact that both Aphismet and Rivener were there.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:34 pm

Rivener had indeed noticed the television was in a strange place: he was now half-draped over the arm of the chair, looking out at the screen and flicking through the few channels, waiting for something interesting to come on.

Aphismet, on the other hand, had ended up on the piano, wondering if the purple-haired resident actually played it at all.

Both males' train of thought were interrupted as Ebony showed up dressed in a more everyday fashion, the kind both were more used to seeing on the brit. Riv sat up straight and turned off the TV, throwing the remote back onto the coffee table. She didn't have many channels, as she said, so the Scorpion figured he'd find more entertainment actually participating in whatever conversation was forthcoming.

Aphismet smiled at his tutor, getting to his feet as she approached. "Ah, coffee would be nice, yes please. And yeah, I brought that casserole, where did I-... oh, there it is. It's cold now, but ah, you can warm up as much as you like by just scooping some into a plate and using the microwave... oh, sorry, you DO have a microwave, right?" The chef picked up the ceramic bowl, intent on bringing it to the kitchen.

"...I'll try some coffee too," Riv said, rather intrigued by the strong, rich, almost woodsy smell of the dark drink. Aphismet turned a stunned eye to his Raevan, at which Rivener only shrugged. "I just want to try!"

With a simple laugh, Ebony took the dish from the chef's hands and headed into the kitchen. "Of course I have a microwave! No cable does not constitute one living in the stone age you know." The Brit carefully transferred the casserole from Aphismet's dish to one of her own microwave friendly ones before placing it into the device. Apparently she thought it prudent to heat it up now since she did have company over.

While the meal was busy reheating, Ebony grabbed two mugs and poured her guests some of the aromatic beverage. "Well I hope you like this Rivener. It's an Arabian blend. Bittersweet chocolate and mocha." It was when she was passing the cups to the two that the violet haired woman remembered Rivener's gift. She really wanted to know whether he liked it or not, but...for some reason she felt shy about asking. What if he didn't like it at all? What if he thought it a bribe of sorts? Then again...he was being pleasantly friendly right now. That had to mean he did like the gift on some level, right?

Biting her bottom lip, Ebony went to rinse Aphismet's dish out so she could give it back to him. And just to keep herself from trying to seem like a gloat and ask about the gift, "So Aphismet, do you play? I see the way you're eyeing my father's piano."
PostPosted: Sat Jul 25, 2009 1:16 pm

Aphismet nearly protested the casserole being taken from him, but he clamped his mouth shut by telling himself that it WAS her gift, she should be able to take it, of course. Aphi still followed into the kitchen, remaining near the door and looking inside. As strangely incoherent as the rest of the place, in a homey, comfortable, lived-in kind of way.

Ah, it looked like Ebony was intending to share the chicken-broccoli penne with them right now? Aphi blushed a bit, hoping she didn't feel obliged to share; he'd made that for her, and she could do whatever she wanted with it, but to waste it on Aphi seemed... well, a waste. Again, the chef said nothing and simply smiled as he accepted the coffee, moving closer to the table so he could add a few small spoonfuls of sugar and some cream. "It smells delicious. Probably stronger than I'm used to, but I'm sure it'll be wonderful. ...Sounds like an expensive kind!" Aphi chuckled, bringing the cup to his lips and taking a sip, both dark eyebrows raising over wide brown eyes. "Mm!"

Rivener took the cup and, watching Aphismet, the Sigel floated closer to the table and put sugar and cream in to match his guardian, having no idea how to properly prepare his coffee. Lifting the cup as well, Riv gave the liquid a curious sniff, rather enjoying the dark, deep aroma. So unlike the strangely crisp, lemony flavor of stars... Although there was something familiar in the dark chocolate undertones of the scent.

The Scorpion took a sip and made a face as he tasted the liquid, not sure what to make of it just yet. "Nnh, bitter. Chocolaty, but not really..." The Sigel took another drink, bigger than a sip this time, and swallowed quickly, smiling. "It's not bad at all," came the declaration.

Aphismet glanced over at the purple-haired host as she rinsed the Delaran's casserole dish. "Oh, the piano... no, I don't play any instruments, no. I was actually wondering if YOU played! It was your Father's?"

"Is it easy to play piano?" Riv asked, looking out at the instrument in question. It looked rather daunting, all big and lacquered...

After she was finished hand washing and drying the casserole dish, Ebony placed it on the kitchen bar so no one would forget it when it was time to leave. She proceeded to move back to the living room to retrieve her own cup of coffee, now lukewarm from sitting idle for so long, but that was okay. The lilac haired female was not one to waste perfectly good food and drinks if she could help it.

Cup in hand, Ebony came back to the two. "Sometimes you just have to treat yourself. I normally just ground whatever beans I have in the freezer. Guess I was feeling a little lazy and indulgent today." The woman sipped her own coffee and nodded her agreement in it not being that bad. Good coffee always had a relaxing property that grocery store knock-offs just couldn't reproduce properly in her opinion.

To the question of playing, Ebony lovingly stroked the lacquered wood before drifting one manicured hand across the black and white keys delicately in a short up beat tempo, almost bordering on playful. She gave a light chuckle, "I play a bit. Father simply adored music and played far, far better than I can. It's both easy and hard I suppose Rivener, depending on your level and passion for it. Go ahead, give it a try if you want. It won't bite I promise." An encouraging smile to Aphismet or maybe a challenging tease. "You can try too if you want. I don't mind."

Rivener watched the piano closely. He'd seen many on tv and in movies, of course, but he'd never seen a REAL one. Not one that he could reach out and plink on, at least. Ebony demonstrated that the thing worked, drawing out a short playful tune, and Rivener smiled. He DID want to try that. "Can I leave my coffee here?" he asked, placing it on the kitchen bar before floating over to the piano and sitting.

Lifting both clawed hands, Riv tilted his head and softly caressed the keys at first, feeling them. Smooth! And kinda cold. Picking a white key at random, Riv pressed down slowly. A dim, lazy G sounded out. Grinning, the Scorpion began pressing with more assurance, the note becoming louder and clearer as the Sigel tested the instrument.

Chuckling to himself, Rivener set to playing tuneless, chaotic songs, simply pressing key after key at random.

Aphismet winced at the cacophony that ensued, turning softly accusing eyes to the purple-haired woman. "What have you started!" he asked, laughing. "If he starts asking me for a piano, you're getting the bill, missy! Oh, that reminds me: thank you for the gift you sent him. He'd been pestering me for a telescope since forever and-"

"AH! NO!" Riv cried out, turning in his seat and frowning at Aphismet. <********, you ruined it! I wanted to say thank you!!!"

"Well, it's not too late, and watch your language."

Sighing, more than a little annoyed that his "waiting for the perfect moment" had turned into "Aphismet blabbers it first", Rivener turned to look at Ebony. "Yeah, well... What he said, I guess. Thank you very much for the gift, I really love it. I've been using it every night. I had a book that told you how to look for certain stars and planets... The telescope isn't really particularly powerful or anything, so I can't spot any nebulas or nothing, but I can see Mars and Venus and even Saturn and Jupiter a little! So thank you very much." The Scorpion's frown at being beaten to the punch had quickly been replaced with an eager smile as he recounted how much he enjoyed the gift.

She nodded a yes even though the Raevan had already taken to placing it down and wandering eagerly towards the instrument. "Too bad you don't have any legs yet, otherwise you could try out the pedals as well." Ebony mused at seeing him play it, although with no real purpose to its rhythm, it was still nice to hear someone else playing the piano again for a change.

Throwing an incredulous grin at her student, "You'll do no such thing. Besides, it could have been far worse. Like an electric guitar or a drum set." She jumped when the night Sigel unintentionally hit the keys of the piano a bit too hard in his anger towards his guardian. At first she thought he'd gotten frustrated with playing the thing.

"Oh, so it got to you okay? That's good." replied the woman as she tried to play it cool like it wasn't making her all giddy inside just to hear this. She finished her coffee and went to rinse her mug out. "I wasn't sure whether you would like or not. But I figured it was worth a shot what with the whole night sky thing. I'm glad you're enjoying it though." She paused shorty before convincing herself it was fine to ask now that the subject had been brought up. "Did Eirdirsceol like his gift as well?"
PostPosted: Sat Jul 25, 2009 4:48 pm

Aphismet had to agree that a guitar or a drum set would indeed have been much, MUCH worse. And to be honest, a piano would look very distinguished in the Delaran house, perhaps one of those old uprights... But Aphi shouldn't be getting ahead of himself. It's not like Rivener had asked for the thing, after all, and Aphi had no intention of learning to play. Turning his attention to the room again, the chef watched his ward gush profusely over his gift, Ebony brightening up with every word but trying to look like she didn't care that much. It was endearing, and Aphi stifled a chuckle.

Rivener grinned and nodded, looking very childlike for one of the few times in his mostly-sultry existence. He was so excited over the gift and so eager to show how happy he was with it that it caused this strange metamorphosis, the Scorpion beaming brightly. "I love it! And I'll enjoy it until it breaks, I promise you! ...But, ah, Eiry? I have to say I didn't notice. I just left his package in the entrance. I assume he got it, but I don't know what he thought. What was it, anyway? I might be able to tell you if he liked it or not..." Riv turned back to the piano as he spoke, plinking away a few notes as he spoke, keeping them soft and not-too-loud.

"I haven't noticed if he liked his gift either, whatever it is. Eiry keeps to himself a lot these days." Aphi sighed sadly, as though a little upset from the minty frei's absence. "I'm sure he liked it, whatever it was."

Try as hard as she might, the happiness bubbling up in her just couldn't be contained entirely, breaking out in small smiles throughout the Raevan's gushing. "Well let's hope it doesn't break anytime soon. Though if it does act up or anything let me know and I will have it fixed up for you."

Finally removing the casserole from the micro, Ebony took out three small plates to place a portion of the meal on them. The rest would go in the fridge for later. Aphismet really was a sweetheart for bringing it over. She really ought to thank him for his kindness properly someday. "Books. Frankenstein and A Christmas Carol. I remembered hearing he liked Poe, so I figured these would be somewhat similar. If you haven't seen him lately perhaps they are keeping him occupied?" She could only hope as she knew the ghostly member of their family had a knack for getting into trouble often.

"Would you two like to eat in the dining room or out on the patio?" asked the grey eyed Brit, presenting them both with a plate and fork. She never asked whether they wanted to eat to begin with, yet that was only in fear of a refusal. Besides, it wasn't a large helping, just enough for a light meal, brunch if you would.
