Yeahyeah, I haven't posted in this guild in a long time, but this idea has been floating around my head for quite a while, so I thought I'd share it with fellow FF7 fans.
Scroll down to the bottom for a cheap summary if you don't want to read all this crap.
For the longest time, I was anticipating the remake of the renowned game of FF7 for the PS1 -- one with crisp graphics, voices, and a better translation as compared to the older version. But lately, I've been thinking, and really thinking.
Square Enix doesn't have the same appeal to me nowadays as it did before. Ever since Advent Children, I've been greatly disappointed. Sure, Advent Children has amazing graphics, and there were a few chosen moments where I felt nostalgia, but come on. They totally raped the characterization of everyone, especially Cloud. Not to mention everyone's character design.
In the game, Cloud talked. Cloud talked a lot. I mean he was, of course, the usual stoic main character of an RPG, but at least he had a personality and character, even after he realized who he truly was and stopped acting like Zack. In FF7, he snowboarded, crossdressed (although unwillingly), played that God-forsaken Moogle game in Gold Saucer, and climbed up a never-ending staircase in the Shinra building with some comedic asides.
Now, with Advent Children Cloud, can you see him doing any of those things?
If they ever were to make a remake, they'd probably edit it to death. If they took out the crossdressing part, I'd be really upset. They'll downplay the characters, the game...they'd just plain destroy it if they go the same way they've been going with Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children.
However, Crisis Core, in some aspects, gave me hope. The added characters, however, still daunt me. That probably means that if they remake the game, there will be hints of Cissnei, Lazard, Angeal, and possibly all the other added characters that I don't really give a flip about in Dirge of Cerberus. It's like Square Enix is finding badly written fanfictions of FF7 because they're too lazy to write their own plots.
I'm not sure, I may just be being a bit cynical, but a remake sounds daunting to me now, unless they actually keep to Cloud's original character -- and everyone else's -- and keep all the zany comedy. It's like they made FF7 so serious and full of DARKNESS that it makes me want to go cry in a corner and cut myself.
Cheap summary: Advent Children and other spin-offs have totally changed the image of the actual, original game.
Do you think this will reflect in the remake? If so, will you still be awaiting it? Do you prefer the classic outlook on the game or the new, serious one?
...yeah, don't ask, I felt like ranting.

It makes me a sad modpanda that well written and thought out topics like this get no attention whilst 'whoz da hottest charaktur in ff7 lawlz' gets fawned over.
In short, yes I want a remake like an addict needs a hit, in the long term when I think over the subject my desire for one hovers on the fine line of maybe. Mostly because of the smaller things you've mentioned, like how they're changed the characters and increased the cast by a rediculous amount.
When I watch AC I feel a particular twang of disappointment with the characters like Cid and Barret who's angry and foul-mouthed demeanour failed to make themselves present in the movie, which as far as I was concerned was one of the main elements of their character. Barret was just a guy with a gun arm who shouted, and Cid was a guy who flew an airship. That was about the depth of their characters in the movie, and especially as Cid was one of my favourites from the FF7 cast I can't help but wonder how true they'd stay to his character if they did remake the game. I thought the characters had pretty much been downplayed in order to make AC accessible to larger audiences, which is something that worries me in terms of a remake where I wonder if they would re-write the lines in order to make characters like Barret and Cid more suitable to younger players.
And also the issue of retcon. In Crisis Core, they completely redid the scene in which Sephiroth realises that he may be a monster himself, outside the JENOVA room in the Nibleheim reactor. Genesis appears out of nowhere and apparently sows the seeds of doubt. So what does that mean for a remake? They're going to edit and streamline events in the game so they fall into accordance with other games in the compliation? I wonder to what extent prospect editing to the game would go, and as a result if the game would even be a shadow of what it was in the original.
I don't know, I loaded up the original FF7 only two days ago and started playing through it again and remember why I loved it to death and want a remake. Then think about the consequences the elaboration on the story has had and wonder how different it could be, and if it would even be the same game anymore.
And on another note, if they replace the turn based system with that active battle stuff that they did in FF12 onwards I will ******** punch something.
tl;dr: If they do anything except fix glitches, improve graphics, add voice acting, and fix translation errors I will be out for blood. Otherwise give me my damn remake already.

I agree that if a remake were to be released that there would be hints of some of the new character introduced in Crisis Core, but at the same time, that may not be entirely bad. I mean, look at Cissnei, by the end of Crisis Core we still don't know that much about her. She even comments that she hasn't even told Zack her real name yet. It's kind of stupid, but I'm actually curious as to what happened to her, I mean the end of the game doesn't really tell you anything about her fate and she obviously wasn't even a thought in the original, so it leaves a loose end there. But all in all I agree. If they are going to remake FFVII they only need to update the graphics, add voice acting, and fix translation errors; however if it did happen, political correctness would ruin it like it has everything else in America so the cross-dressing scene with cloud would probably be gone and probably every hell and goddammit would be censored out, thus not making the game worth buying

Yeahhhh, according to me, all the new characters don't exist. Genesis? Yeah, ******** you, that's just Gackt as a video game character. Who cares? The only new characters I've gotten used to have been Denzel and Kadaj. They actually have substantial character that makes me happy. The rest? Lol no. Go away.

Amen!
I would like a remake ONLY if it was just to improve the graphics, upgrade the music where possible, complete/correct the script, and add in some voice acting or improve/add the videos.
If they change the characters' personalities to fit AC, then I'd be pissed. If they add in the 900 extraneous, added characters not heard of in the original FF7, I'd be pissed.
The only additions I'd like would be more sidequests, or utility stuff like a Bestiary or a Video watching section (to view cutscenes).
I'm also annoyed how they really changed around everyone's personalities. FF7 was a pretty silly game at times, and there was some crazy stuff. AC is a big mope fest starring Cloud and the rest of the crew basically gets an extended cameo.

Pretty much what you guys have already said sums it up.But I'd still like one, as long as-like you guys said- they don't go around and start changing the story and characters. Cloud's personality was SUCH a letdown in FFAC. I was seriously asking myself why Cloud was acting like that....totally different from the Cloud in FF7. I mean in FFAC they make it look as though Cloud is all emo and antisocial, but in FF7 even after "the events of disc 1" lol-he was making speeches and trying to inspire everyone else to go on.Not to mention the "let's mosey!"xD But yea I'd love a remake!I think they should add new little extras like minigames or even some new scenes, just not mess anything up=)

Hoorah to Spoony-Chan for saying something!
And ditto with Vincent and Smaddy. 3nodding I get bothered sometimes with debates when people use the later FFVII products than arguing with what it originally was.
And sometimes I wanna scream "That wasn't part of the orginal dang it! It's a change!!!! D8<"
Also my friend always comments on Cloud's "emo-ness", when honestly, I liked him more than Seph and didn't view him in that way 'til AC came out. Before that he was slightly aloof, a little full of himself, spunky, and determined.

I don't doubt that they're gonna tweak some things about the game. It's been a while since I've had my hopes satisfied, lol. The good thing is, is that if I don't like it, I still have the original version on the side.
The dumb thing is, is that now a days, those who haven't played FFVII but have thought about it, complain about the graphics (which I'd like to say for many of us here probably have grown quite fond to) are unbearable for them and they suddenly lose will in playing. (Which labels them under my FAIL list, but eh). So if a new version comes out and is not in sync with the original.. It's almost like changing the past... -Words of Blasphemy- DB
INteresting news: PSP Go is said to be offering the original FFVII game for $10.

This offer has actually been around for a while with the PSN, offered through the PS3 so you buy the game and transfer it to the PSP. Now with PSP Go you cut out the middleman. Personally I think that, although some stuff would be changed (making Zack's story match CC). The game will prob come out with an T rating, even if they keep everything that was in it, so no need to censor. They'll still be more acceptable than the borderline-AO GTA series. The music and graphics can do with a modern update, and a retranslation of the script would be nice, so I have high hopes for this if it comes out, but I don't know how far I can trust Squeenix anymore.

I voted "Of course I would be pleased," and here's why.
The original game already exists, and nothing new that comes out can change it. If the new version is the same except better, then great! If they make lamentable changes, then I still have my old copy.

@Bob: True, though I wonder if even buying the GO itself is worth it, since I already have the original for the PSX.
@SB: Indeed for you this is true, but thinking about future generations and how it would be viewed then is different. How Different is the Joker today compared to back then? How many fans does this new Joker have? How awesome was the Wolverine Origins movie to so many people, despite its inaccuracy?
Unless they grow to be full on fanatics and have a hungering need to connect with and learn the base of their obsession, what we know that has changed... to others was(/will) never a change at all.
