Jeeze.. I hate people. Just last week The American Red Cross came to my school, for those of you who don't know they prohibit males from donating blood if they have ever engaged in sexual intercourse with another male. My boyfriend found this out as he decided to go donate his blood to the needy. His name was then taken down upon answering "yes" to the question "have you ever had sex with another male?" and he is now perminately banned from giving blood. In the same week I have had to report a teacher to the schoolboard for talking negatively of my boyfriend and I to her entire second period class... I don't know about you guys but I am constantly facing discrimination and bigotry like this, if any of you have some stories to tell then this is the thread.

I'm sure there's some special safety reason for that, although I've never heard of the rule. They're just doing themselves in.
A teacher I know got fired because she was making a huge argument about gay people and discriminating not knowing a gay guy was in the class. He started crying and then someone asked if he had to see a counselor. He said yes because he's gay. Teacher was awestruck, guy went to counselor, teacher was fired days later.

I don't know does this belong here, but anyways..
When I got my first job there was a girl who started to avoid me after she heard that I'm lesbian. She didn't talk to me, she couldn't work with me, etc. I was like o.O Then I heard from my other work mate that she tought that I'm trying to hit her or transform her to lesbian and that's why she was like she was..

Yes, the Red Cross thing is very, very stupid. Straight people totally can't carry diseases in their blood. Obviously. It's not like they don't screen all the blood anyway. Grr.
Sorry, hun.

[Q] I'm sure there's some special safety reason for that, although I've never heard of the rule. They're just doing themselves in. Red Cross as an international body does it everywhere, even in Canada. Canadian Blood Services, our national blood donating organization, also asks. It's not just a safety reason. True, we're at a higher risk, but it doesn't mean they should target us specifically to screen more carefully or exclude entirely. You're perfectly right, they're just screwing themselves over, especially with such a large blood shortage and people unwilling to donate.

Becurz of COURSE all gay men have AIDS and everyone else is immune.
A better question would be whether you've got clean records for blood-transmissive STDs, without any questions about who you've slept with.
It's not like they can't just test ALL THAT BLOOD that they just sucked out of your arm and see if you've got one anyway.

What about lesbians who have sex with women? Are they still allowed to donate their blood?
