There was not going to be a Touching this time. Sharding fool who touched the Eggs several sevendays ahead of time. Simply ridiculous. Jessan shook his head as he bit into a citrus. He was sitting in the lower caverns, having a light mid-day meal, observing those coming and going. Most were Candidates, what a surprise, though many were also dragon riders and crafters. After being at the Weyr for almost two Turns, he realized that his time to Impress would soon be ending.
Jessan had gone through several moods before coming to terms with this. If he really wanted, he could always wander off to bug his cousin if he wasn't in lessons. Or he could go find work to do. He snickered at this... Or, just because they were not allowed to Touch the eggs, doesn't mean that they couldn't look at them. In his many explorations, Jessan had come across a very narrow crack in the Weyr walls that looked in on the Eggs. Just then, his merry blue eyes caught another lad his age walking up. The boy's hair was copperish in nature and his body quite appealing. He couldn't help it, it was in his nature to give everyone at least one good look over. Must be the herder in him. "'Lo there!"

He was a bit more subdue then usual. His cousin had not only hunted down his teacher for an all but forced a private meeting between then. Rom had got his teacher to push him till he finally broke. Two confessions in just a few days and the knowledge that his Great gran was doing fine; she was recovering from the nasty illness bout, had left him more then cheery. Kind of tired and run down.
He blinked twice, tilting his head over, pausing in mid step which caused a little stumble. Ungraceful. Blah. “Hey.” ‘Rish paused trying to remember if he had seen the face before in his class. No, no…almost but the other young man was to pale. Most of his fellow apprentices tended to be sunburned or darkly tanned from hauling sand. Not to mention a flickering of burns from accidents with glass. “…Do I know you?”

Jessan laughed. It was a light laugh meant to be welcoming and teasing all at the same time. Munching on his citrus and taking a swig of water, he shook his head. The boy had seemed a little zoned out when he called to him. Hopefully, Jessan hadn't startled him out of anything important.
"No, no. I don't think so. Not with so many crowded in like a bunch of trundlebug babies on a mother's back. I am Jessan. You seemed a little dazed. Just wanted to make sure things were okay."
Citrus finished, Jessan reached for a redfruit and politely offered it to the other boy. "Welcome to Ista if you have just arrived."

'Rish gave a lazy off centered smile, running a broad hand though his tangled curls. "Either I seen you...Ahh!" He snapped his fingers. "You look a little bit like the heart trob of a boy my cuz was cooing about when we where fifteen. It's the cheekbones." Dark curls as well…which really was why his sister quickly got over the nameless boy he could just barely remember.
“Mm, my cousin should up in person after three years of just receiving messages.” He sat down taking the fruit with quite thanks. “Been here three years, basically live down by the beaches and the glass smith’s forges though. So you might say that.” He shrugged running fingers over the fruit before taking a bite.
He swallowed. “Nearly forgot! You can call me ‘Rish. Been going by that for so long its almost become my actual name.”

Taking another redfruit, Jessan was enjoying his meal. The heat of Ista did not allowed for heavy meals. Food tended to sit on one's stomach like a stone. Munching happily, trying not to let the juice dribble down his chin. "Three turns, huh? I have been here about two turns. At least, in the Weyr. Before that I was a herder with my family. Born and raised on the island. Name's Jessan."
He thought about taking some of the cold soup but decided against it. As far as he was concerned, soups and stews should be warm. This strange cold soup was not something that had caught his appetite. "Well, Rish. Since I don't know you... I doubt I know your cousin."

'Rish munched on the fruit, listening politely and licking up stray juice that threaten to leave streaks down his chin. "Yeah, down at Ista hold not the Wery mind you." Having finished his fruit he worked on cleaning all the juices off his fingers with his tongue. Waste not, want not.
“Be surprised if you did. We are both from Southern Boll hold. Rami was at Keroon to learn her trade, just made journeywoman and decided to visit home and kin. Last I heard her master allowing her to work in Ista till after the hatching then she’s going to who know where.” He shrugged, then paused eyes widening slightly. “Ahh, you must be a candidate yes? To be living in the Wery for the last two turns.”

"Ah yes. I am. I am in my last Turn. Well, I just turned 20 and so have one or two more Clutches to stand for... After that, I will probably go back to Herding. Maybe go to Keroon to work on my Journeymanship." Jessan looked rather thoughtful at this. He tapped his fingers against the table. There were so many possibilities for him.
"What does your cousin do if you are the Glass Smith? And what is Southern Boll like?" Jessan was excited about visiting another hold. Some people never got that chance, staying in the same big or small hold all their lives. Jessan just didn't want to be content, he wanted to be happy. "Have any chores or tasks for the day?"

"The quick answers would be beast healer, wonderfully less crowded, and no." 'Rish chuckled. "The long answer would be cousin is a journeywomen beast healer. She just got promote to that status...a few months ago at Keroon.” Hazel eyes soften slightly in thought. “Southern Boll is the best place on Pern in but I'm likely bias since great gran and mother are there. Anyhow, Southern Boll is at the end of this narrow finger of land so in three different directions we border beach. But you can travel nearly all of the northern land by runner, except Ista you need a boat or dragon to get here.”
“I just finished my chore of the day, dropped of some apprentice work vials and bottles for the trainee healers to play with.” ‘Rish snapped his fingers. “I was just going to get lunch. Still do,” his stomach growled slightly, one fruit wasn’t going to fill him though it was appreciated. “What about you? Plans or chores today?”

"A beast healer? She and I would have a lot in common. As a herder, I needed to know the basics in case one of the burden beasts received an injury. But that doesn't mean that we wouldn't have a lot in common." Jessan gave a bold wink. He was enjoying another person's company; it had been a while since he actually relaxed.
"Well, fill that belly of yours. It doesn't do good to try and work or make sense of anything on an empty stomach. Everyone knows that." Jessan finished his redfruit and took a hunk of bread. Breaking it into two, he gave Rish a piece. "I wouldn't get too full if you want to go exploring with me though."

"If you want to meet her I can 'arrange it," 'Rish said making finger quotes. "Most likely she’ll just appear out of no where and start bellowing at me to come to dinner." 'Rish stretched just catching the wink. 'Is he coming on to me?' Not that he would mind if it was the case. He was rather cute.
'Rish took the bread munching happily. “Exploring is climbing and getting filthy. I’m in.” He tore the bread apart again, giving a smile. “So, where are we going to explore at? If it’s the beach there is always a chance we can catch a fish or two and have a cook out on the beach.”

"I suppose if she tends to pop up, I will run into her sooner or later. Since I have been here a while, I really don't have to go to lessons anymore. Though I did get assigned chores. Today, I only had to feed the runners and clean their stalls out." Jessan wrinkled his nose but grinned all the same. He loved animals of any kind.
Slathering his piece with precious butter and cheese, Jessan munched happily through his meal. Since coming to the weyr, he had appreciated the fact that they were kept fed even if sometimes one couldn't go back for seconds. Sighing over that fact, he did appreciate the fact that he wasn't living off of mutton and tubers. "Not going to the beaches. We are exploring here in the Weyr. Something I discovered not too long ago. If you are game..."

"Short hair, no nonsense, very dark eyes, and busty." 'Rish replied ticking off each trait on one hand, the other holding his bread. "She goes by Rom or Rami and tends to always where long skirts." He stopped holding the piece of bread in his mouth to crack his knuckles. Wiggled them and took his simple meal back chewing. "Just incase she pops up."
"Something here in the Weyr? I'm game...anything you show me here would be an adventure." 'Rish shrugged his shoulders. "First time I been actually in the Weyr since I been on Ista."

"Well, considering the only time I see ladies around here is in the caverns or kitchens, you may have to introduce us. But she sounds interesting enough." Jessan chuckled and grabbed a sweet roll. Now if only there could be bubbly or berry pies. Sighing, he finished his mug off. He was full now. It would be a matter of waiting for his new friend to finish up.
Nodding when Rish mentioned what they would be exploring, Jessan moved a little closer. Interesting eyes, he had. Moving his head close, the older youth lowered his voice. "There is to be no Touching because of some dimglow who touched them way too early. But there is a crevice where you can see them from..."

"Mm, you might see her in the stables if you clean them often." 'Rish offered before finishing the bread. He could always grab something else on the way there way to where every they where going...
He was close...
Okay?
'Rish blinked twice, tilting his head trying to process what Jessan had said. "We are going to spy on dragon eggs?" He questioned before everything clicked. "Oooh...why would some dimglow touch them early?"

"Not really. Sometimes. Mainly I handle feeding and well... Herding. Moving them from one pen to another, birthings sometimes. If the task master is really in a mood then I have to work inside sometimes." Jessan made a face at that. He hated being inside. Most of his life and lifestyle had been spent outside and that is what he preferred most.
"Shhhh... Some people are still on edge about the subject." He almost said touchy but that would have been in bad taste. Jessan leaned down like a conspirator talking about his great plan. "I don't know why the sharding girl did it... Probably because she didn't know any better. I do know that no one is allowed on the Sands until the Hatching occurs. But, if we are careful, we can at least look at the eggs."
