Hayden stood at the top of the wooden play structure, surveying his realm with a keen eye and a twitching tail. The play enclosure was surrounded by pea gravel which was, presumably, so that when children fell off the monkey bars they would fall into a pile of tiny rocks instead of onto one or two big ones. The lolcat didn't see the pea gravel, though. All he saw was lava. A roiling mess of lava surrounding the play structure.
He chewed on his squeaky rubber cheeseburger and looked for some method of escape. His parents were sitting placidly at a picnic table with Warren. Big brother Darsh was off on his own. There was nobody close enough to call for help. Not that someone as daring as Hayden needed help.
"C'mon, fud." He said to the squeak toy. "We haz to find princess."

"CAPDEEEEEEN!"
Teary eyed Kentucky was in a pristine white sailor dress, pulling at the hair of one Captain William Jones, who was currently wishing that he had never agreed to take her to the park while Marney was off being gainfully employed. He had recently lost a ship, mostly due to the aye aye that the girl on his shoulders was, if Marney was to be believed, the product of. And though he had survived shipwreck, his job hadn't so in the meantime he crashed at Marney's house and was an impromptu babysitter.
"For your information, I AM a captain." he informed the girl testily, and was gratified with a brief pause in the assault being staged on any part of his head Kentucky could reach.
However, it was only brief, the Hiccup reached a conclusion all too quickly. "Not MY capden!" she screeched, beginning her attacks again.
"Ouch, hey, ow!" Quickly, he set her down and she seemed gratified, if not a tad weepy still. "Look, just... Just go play or something. Be safe, have fun, don't go too far." Kentucky ran off in the direction of the play structure and he went to massage his aching head.

It was impossible to tell how Hayden had gained his knowledge of video games, considering that the Peace family owned no consoles whatsoever. Max and Emma did not believe in television, let alone video games. Their set was black and white.
So how it was that the lolcat came to the decision that Captain William Jones could be nothing but a bad guy who was holding the Princess against her will, it was impossible to tell. Especially since words like Wario and Peach were flitting through his furry little head.
Nimbly, Hayden leapt down to where Kentucky was approaching. "Careful!" He warned, eyes big as saucers. "Teh gravel. It is lavas!" Then he narrowed his eyes. "Is you teh princess? Was that Koopa hurtings you? Is you in the right castles nao?" The barrage of quite probably nonsensical sentences didn't seem likely to end any time soon.

Kentucky had to find Captain.
This was the thought prominent in her upset mind, and she sniffled as she ran through the playground. Why did Captain always have to leave like this? Didn't she know that First Mate could mutiny at any moment? It was a very real danger, and he had already claimed to be a captain. What other sinister evils could he get up to? Clearly, she had to find and warn Captain before it was too late, and then maybe they could make First Mate swab the deck or something, something that would teach him not to kidnap her again, because she didn't want to mutiny at all, no!
Her thoughts were interrupted when she found herself the subject of a stare that rivaled even her own ocular powers. Big yellow eyes opening wide, she returned it with one of the like as the boy in front of her began talking in a language she didn't understand.
Like any good sailor, she decided speaking loudly and slowly would bridge the language barrier. Who needed French when saying 'BAAAAATHROOOOOOM' repeatedly would get the point across just as well?
"Goooootttaaaaaa fiiiiiiind Caaaaaaapden!" she explained, miming a Captain's hat on her head. Some of the words the boy was saying were familiar though and she bit her lip. Did he speak English after all? "Lavas?" she looked at the gravel worriedly. Clearly the land the first mate had brought her to was not your average park. It was uncharted territory. "No prinsuss, Capden! 'V you seen Capden? Firs' mate's causin' a mut-nee!"

Clearly, they were operating under a language barrier. That was alright with Hayden, however. He was used to people almost-but-not-quite understanding him, though as far as he was concerned he spoke as clearly as everyone else. His parents called it an "impediment" whatever that was.
Miraculously well-versed in pirates as well as ninjas and princes and video games (miraculous because all they had at home was an old black and white tv that only worked a quarter of the time) Hayden realized that this person was making a new game for him. He grinned.
"Capden." He narrowed his eyes and looked around. "I dont think so... but what is mutnee? Is you a pirates? I can be pirate-cat too!" He was starting to get excited about the prospect of being a pirate.

"No, no no!" Kentucky exclaimed somewhat indignantly.
"Pirates'r bad! Bad, bad, 'n illeg'l." Captain and First Mate had both been very clear on this point, and Kentucky clung to their combined wisdom like a barnacle to a hull. Pirates weren't good news, and being called one was a pretty serious insult. "'M a le-gull sailor, thankyou." She wasn't quite sure what 'illegal' and 'legal' meant but she suspected it had something to do with birds. Eyeing the cat, she bit her lip. Were cats bad luck? Would he eat the le-gull by accident? Maybe a cat like him would be okay, she didn't fancy looking for Captain all alone. "But you c'n be a sailor too, s'long as you get a le-gull." She stuck out a spindly hand. "Deal?"
"Mut-nee... Mut-nee is when Firs' Mate decides to take over th' ship n' betray Capden." She regarded him solemnly with round yellow eyes. "'S very bad, I don't want my Capden being mut-need at so I gotta find her and tell her b'fore Firs' Mate does it."

Hayden had to consider the offer for a long moment. She seemed very vehement and serious, and he wasn't sure he wanted a vehemently serious game. Then again, it was clear she took playing seriously. And people who played seriously often played better, because they didn't get bored as fast. (Not that it usually mattered, Hayden's attention span approximated that of a goldfish).
"Lee-gull?" The feline peered around the sky, then back at Kentucky. Finally, his little brain had a lightbulb moment. She wasn't so much suggesting a whole new game, she was just changing the names of the game he'd been playing before! The princess was called capden and the Koopah was call first mate. Finally, it made sense.
"Okayz!" Furry paw grasped spindly hand and shook. "We rescue Capden from furst mate!" He eyed the girl warily. "But the gravel is still lavas." He added. In Hayden's opinion the lava game should be worked into every situation possible. "So's you can't touches the gravels or you'll burn up."
