I have found out that there is going to be a comic book coming out in December. It's based off of the days in Persia that Erik went through. Its not based off of the Susan Kay version mind you, but off of the Leroux version. You HAVE to check it out. Copy and paste this in your browser.

The comic is called the Trapdoor Maker. Its pretty cool so far. Contact your local comic shop to order your copy today!

ew....No I don't think I'm, going to like this one bit, first off it's way more of a comic book look rather than manga look (so what if I have a bias? ninja ) which gives a harsher and boxier look, yeah I just hate the style in general (although that's never a reason to put down a comic in the first place...). And I already HATE the way Erik is portayed (not to mention that realistic looking cg of him...buff???) what's with the bag/rug?...okay...I guess that's his mask but what's with the getup? a vest and bare arms? Doesn't look very menacing for the "living corpse" which according Leroux was his name within that gypsy band getup. And What's with that old guy giving Erik advice? Erik would punjab the idiot on the spot for saying that (becuase he's not supposed to have friends....)

"Then I will trouble you no more sir" scream wtf?! that does not sound like something Erik would say to haughty gaurd that asked him to take his mask off...

The only thing that looked intresting was all the little killing getups in the sketchbook section....but then there was more buff Erik which made me gag gonk

Eh, I don't like the style. I looked through some of it and it didn't catch my fancy. Don't think I will be investing in the book.

Now you gotta remember tho that this is the Erik from the Leroux version. If you havent ever read the Leroux version you need to go here.

heart http://www.online-literature.com/leroux/phantom_opera/ heart

This is an online version of it. Now also you must take into account that he's around 20ish right now. And because of his harsh life he would have had to be very strong, all of that hard labour, no matter how annorexic you're suppose to look would make you have serious muscle deffinition, remember being cut dosent neccecarily mean you're buff. He's still really thin, he just has good muscle definition, I have a few RL friends that have that body type too. And with the vest and Fez.... sweatdrop Yes, I thought the fez was a little strange but he's in a new area and hey, when in rome....or persia for this matter dress like the persians do 3nodding . That was the garb for that time period. And this was BEFORE he came up with the Punjabi lasso I beleive. And he merely perfected the art with that particular weapon after he became an assassin for the Shah.

About the tan thing though, he's not suppose to be tan really. He's suppose to look a bit jaundiced, remember "like yellow parchment is his skin" I beleive that would be like a faded yellowish. A very interesting colour to be sure. But the main of it is in Black and white anyway so you wont have to worry about that domokun 3nodding

Sure, he may have gotten a bit of a tan being out in the hot sun like that. I mean even pale jaundiced skin would tan, it'd still look a bit yellowish but after he builds and inhabits the Paris Opera he's out of the sun for YEARS so his skin would fade back to pale faded parchment colour again.

I'd say to at least give it a chance, come on, its only like 5 bucks for the first comic, IF that. And the artist/author said that he is doing the style like it is because he can add more detail then if it was in colour. And hey, I didnt hear anyone complaining about Gerry Butler being a buff Erik 4laugh , heck there was more muscle on GB Erik then there was suppose to be. Not to mention in the Leroux book he mentions that Erik's usual mask was basically a black satin cloth over his face. ninja

Just because its not the usual Porcelin full or half mask that everyone is SO used to, (which might I add would also be VERY uncomfortable seeing that porcelin dosent breathe gonk ) dosent mean that its bad. I mean come on. This is Erik, if he HAS to wear a mask, or something to cover his face dont you think it'd be at least a bit more comfortable then that? Especially in the humid and heated weather of Persia?

And yes yes I know he's bald in the comic, so what, he's SUPPOSE to be basically bald in the original book. He only had hair over his ears and forelocks, those would be the bang area I'd suppose. And that's it, that's why he wore a wig. Man, to get the intricacies of Erik one must really read the original book. Though the fact that sir Andrew Lloyd Webber couldnt understand the story fully and said that it was a bit confusing, he couldnt determine if it was a mystery novel, a love story or what. Though really smart people would have gotten it right out. It only goes to show that he dosent have a very good grasp of such pieces of litterature which deals with that style of writeing. It made perfect sense to me. Then again I guess you have to have something of a high grasp of different concepts to understand the writeings of an early 20th century author.

Ok.....sorry if it sounds like I was flameing, I wasnt really sweatdrop . I was just pointing out a few issues that people need to try and accept/get over.

If you're a Webber Purist then I that's all well and good but you must remember that Webber only based his musical from the book and he took SERIOUS artistic liberty on the original writeing so its not really cannon to the original 3nodding .

And if you're a Susan Kay Purist then thats allright too, she did a good job on her book, but you must remember that she also had to make up stuff and elaborate on areas that werent covered in the GL original.

So in all essence the ALW and SK version are really just glorified Phan Phics if you think about it. And truthfully, anything that is based souly from the GL original, is acctually doable. The original book's copyright is expired and its acctually free game to authors that wish to take the story further(There's a nice tid bit for all you phickers out there that want to get your stories published). SK did it, ALW did it and about a DOZEN other authors did it. I mean for crying out loud Sam Siciliano made a Sherlock Holmes book with Erik in it. It was a good one mind you. And the fact that Holmes himself said that Erik was ingenius with his traps just goes to show that Erik IS the all time uuber genius. 3nodding 4laugh

Ok I'll shut up now. I just really had to get those off of my chest. I just hope that you give it a chance, and hey, even if you dont like it its still Erik memorabelia. And any true Phanatic collects all they can. *Snuggles Erik Plushie* mrgreen

P.s. Sorry for this being a bit long, I had alot I had to try and clear up.

The comic is what they remind me with their Erik.

Erik = Aladdin? wtf? gonk
PostPosted: Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:40 am

Yes, my first thought was, what's Aladdin doing in Persia? Then I realized it was Erik. eek

And the black cloth mask was actually formed like a human face in the book, because masks then were made out of cloth (note: not plastic!) and they were starched to hold the shape of a human face. Think about it, a shapeless black satin cloth would do no good to caver up the fact that Erik has no nose. He'd want to have a nose, so Christine wouldn't figure it out too easily.

Yes, I realize that and in the GL book when Erik HAD to go out to buy clothes, food etc, he had a false nose he would wear and a mustache as well as a flesh coloured mask that made him look somewhat semi normal. And with his wide brimmed hat pulled low enough no one would be able to tell he was deformed. Though, you know he might have been able to get away with the deformity by sayinghe was in an accident, or he had been sick. Then people would have just seen an eccentric genius and he could have been renouned for his mental capacity for advancement and acheivement in Music, science, art, architecture. Heck anything he put his mind to he can master.

But anyway, he's not gonna be wearing the fez the whole time you know...sheesh.
But with the startched cloth mask it might have been too hot for the Persian climate. And having it flow like that would have beenthe best way to go about that situation. And to keep it in place and not flap around he would have to tie it somehow.

Everyone should worship that book. And secondary should be Kay's novel.
