Normally Bachi didn't get very excited over things. It was important to keep a calm, and astoute demeanor that spoke of power, toughness, and ability to whoop a** in a fight. Especially that last one.

However, when news of a lake on Ista Weyr came to his knowledge (mainly on the fly in) coupled with the wonderful, stifling weather, Bachi couldn't resist skipping finding where his living quarters were entirely and practically sprinted down towards the lake.

It was a very interesting venture, and he got lost quite a few times. He did not however, ask for any directions, and fate was proving to him that he needed no directions by . . .

Okay. So, he was still lost.

At least he knew where the kitchen was now, and probably half of the weyrs in his opinion. This sucked, but he refused to admit defeat. He'd just have to wait until someone came around that was also going to the lake and just accompany them.

Coming in, Sen hadn't realized living here was so much work. She hadn't expected a free ride--minus the one that had brought her here (haha, pun!)-- but she also hadn't predicted it would be an almost non-stop schedule of labor. Never was she deprived of people to do tell her 'do this' or 'do that'. Their numbers yielded only to how much there was to do. So much, there wasn't even enough people to assign them! On one hand, it was a proven tactic in hindering her from doing nothing more than drifting around, moping Nasu still wasn't here and wondering if she ever would be. On the other, it contrasted with her lazy side. Which, she'd admit, dominated as the more convincing half.

In addition to forcing some work ethic upon her, it made her appreciate the free time she did have and learn not to waste it. Things were slow that day, compared to the others at least, and she'd been working so hard for so long it was about time she had a break. Thankful for the immunity from more chores, she scurried to her room and threw on whatever she could find.

This ended up being her favored wear: baggy clothes that, combined with her hair and face, made her resemble a man rather than a woman. Chances were not even a man would walk out clad in an attire like that, let alone flee from the room in it, throwing his arms up and crying out in joy like she did.

--Who was that?

"Hey, kid! Are you lost?" she called out. Didn't look like he had the slightest idea where he was going!

Bachi paused in his wandering and turned around to face the voice.

Was that a chick or a dude? He squinted, and finally decided it had to be the former, because the idea of the latter just made him shudder.

"No, I'm not lost," he said as he crossed his arms and looked at the. . . well, what would you call it? Her would do, he supposed. Why'd she have to dress like that anyway? It hurt his brain to think about.

"Why would I be lost?" Then he paused, and tactfully added. "Where are you going?"

Wow, he really was lost.

Usually, she'd have felt too compelled to point out how obvious it was to resist, but in her surge of joy in the face of freedom, this usually dominating quirk lay dormant in favor of anticipation. Her imagination ran as wild as she had been seconds ago. Maybe the water would be cool--no, freezing!--and there would be more flitt eggs on the sand! Gold ones! Yes, this trip was going to be awesome.

"Alright, if you say so." If the kid wasn't gonna admit it, he could wander around some until he finally got tired and owned up to whoever ran into him after that. What's the worst that could happen to him here? Maybe learning a sense of direction on his own would do him some good! That in mind, she moved to dart off, but stopped when he spoke again.

"The lake. Do you wanna come?" It'd be more fun with more than one person. Providing he didn't steal her gold eggs.

He nodded matter-of-factly. He definitely was not lost with the exception of the fact that he had no idea where the place he wanted to go was. That certainly wasn't lost, it was taking a very long detour.

Of course, when she went on with the lake, his eyes brightened. Perhaps he seemed a little to excited about the idea that she was going to the lake.

"Absolutely!" he answered, and then realized how ridiculous it made him sound.

"I was planning on going to the lake in any case, and I wouldn't mind accompanying someone." There. That sounded much, much better. Then of course, he had to ruin it again by jogging to catch up with her.

At this point, however, his joy was not going to let him have the 'cool' battle. He really wanted to go to the lake.

"Race ya!" he said to make it a challenge, and realized his mistake before he'd even started. He'd have to loose if only because he had absolutely no idea where he was going. Whoops.

Sen couldn't help but grin widely. This kid was cute. Haughty though he may be, it was probably a stage he'd grow out of by time he reached her age. She noted the resemblance to that grumpy guy, Balin, in both features and attitude. Was this the brother she'd heard he was complaining about? What a weird family.

Not to be distracted much longer, she was preparing to advance in their venture when Bachi beat her to it. And, never having been swayed to believe he had a clue where the lake was, she realized his mistake before he did. It was some amusing, ironic and soon-to-be troublesome kind of joker's karma that, when the awareness of this blunder dawned on her, she made her own.

Somehow, in the short while she'd lived in the Weyr, Sen had always been assigned to the same areas. Do this, do this again, do this again over and over. Rarely had she seen a place that wasn't one she'd seen before, and while this made exploring in her free time more exciting, it made the impending prank that seemed like an oh-so-good idea at the time... not a good idea. At all.

Sen ran, and ran fast, to get ahead of Bachi. She'd just lead him in a wrong direction and pretend to be lost. Just for kicks. Sure, the prior warning she'd been told not to run around was ringing loud and clear, but, psh. Who really cared about such silly rules?

The candidate stopped and took a dramatic look around. "Oh, no! I guess we're lost. You'll have to lead us there from here!"

Only upon second glance did she grasp that, now, she was lost.

Well, s**t.

Had he been a dog, Bachi would have been one of those that let its tongue hang out as it ran. The kind that looked stupid and dumbly happy at the same time. That was exactly how Bachi ran - with a dumb sort of happiness that no one could take away from him.

That was, until Senra came to a screeching halt and Bachi was left looking confused. He folded his arms over his chest in a very 'manly' fashion and eyed her before she started talking.

Well great. Now he was even more lost than before! He knew he shouldn't have trusted a her-thing!

"Uh. . ." he stated brilliantly as he took a look around. "Right. This way." And it was in this fashion that he sunk himself a bigger and deeper hole.

He went off with his head raised high down some corridoor and got a little overexcited when he saw light pouring down. It turned out to be a vantage point cut in the rock, and upon peering over the ledge, Bachi found it was a very long way down.

"Look, there's the lake," he said, pointing out across the great expanse of the bowl to the shimmering body of water. Now. . . to get there. His brother would probably say something mean and awful like, 'Great. You found it. Who's jumping first?'

He chewed on his lower lip and thought about it for a second, and then stormed down the path with added determination. "It's not far now!"

. . . there was the stupid kitchen again.

When she really thought about, Sen knew she deserved this. They were going to look mighty stupid if they had to ask someone for directions. For now, she wasn't worried about it. There was no way her luck was bad enough the eggs would hatch while they were going around in circles.

The ledge was close, but not quite what she'd been hoping for. The kitchen, though, was more of a welcomed sight than it would usually be. And, usually, it was very welcomed. If there was one place she knew how to get, and one place she knew how to get back from, it was here.

Maybe she could offer a subtle out so that neither of them would have to admit their lack of direction?

"So, I'm kind of hungry now that I think about it. Maybe we should grab something to eat while we're here."

She'd figure out what to do from there.

Bachi caught the scapegoat by the horns, so to speak.

Pausing to look at the kitchen and then back at Sen, he nodded. "Yeah, I'm starved." Not waiting for her to agree or disagree, he made his way into the kitchens.

He had yet to find out the situation of the bad food at the Weyr.

"Maybe we'll find someone else to join us on the way to the lake," he offered as well.

The kitchens were something new and interesting. He didn't know of any massive cooking areas like this around where he lived. Maybe getting lost was more interesting than he had previously assumed.

"What kind of food do they have here?" he asked after a while, wrinkling his nose as a particularly distasteful smell reached it.

'No running' was lost on Sen, but not everything was. She could hear Elae's warning about the woman who roamed this kitchen as if she was standing beside her repeating it at that very moment. Her voice lowered, posture became cautious. "Shh. There's a crazy lady who works here. We need to hurry and get something and get out."

Sen scanned the kitchen residents, realizing it wouldn't help her much since she'd never actually seen the woman. Only heard of her. No one looked insane, so they must be in the clear. For now.

She motioned for Bachi to follow her, whispering the story of the crazy lady cook who would hit them with pots and pans if they didn't hurry out of there before she got back from wherever she was--or just noticed them if she was already present.

The candidate gathered a bowl of berries, careful not to take more than she knew she and Bachi needed. That way, they'd be shown mercy if anyone raged at them for taking a snack.

"Come on, let's get out of here!"

You'd have thought she was running from a fire the way Sen bolted out of that kitchen.

Bachi played the part and listened very intently at Sen's story. He made have been a stuck up 16-Turn boy, but he knew how to listen when he had to - also known as the story was interesting.

Helping her gather berries when he saw what she was up to, he barely had enough time to think when she was yelling at him that they were leaving and she'd bolted.

"Sen!" he yelped after her before he had the brilliance to dart off all the same. She was really quick for a girl.

But, he really should have been thanking her for the quick rush, because in their speed to get out of the kitchen, Bachi found himself confronted with a large amount of light. And no, he couldn't see the lake from here, but they were outside, and not a huge distance away from the flat, solid ground.

Still, there was one question. "Are we allowed to take food from the kitchen?" He knew there was porridge always on the available, but berries seemed like an intense treat. Not that it mattered now; he'd eat them anyway, but for future reference, it would be good to know. If Balin caught him stealing things away from the kitchen, well, he wasn't sure he wanted to think about it.

Should there ever be war, Sen was the last person you'd want on your side. 'Go on without me!' scenes wouldn't have had the touching loyalty they did with her. She'd have called out, 'Okay!', and been on her way to safety. Probably.

Sen would have liked to think herself more loyal in situations where the risks where more serious than peeling tubers. Didn't matter anyway! Bachi had gotten out alive and with no punishment. Better yet, they'd finally found the shore!

She didn't answer until they reached it. When they did, she was all too happy to talk between shoveling berries in her mouth, considering the question carefully. Too carefully.

"...Yes?" she spoke slowly and sounded more like she was asking than answering. Second go around was much more confident. "Yes."

So long as you don't get caught.

Bachi settled himself down and stuffed his mouth just the same. Only, he made great fun of tossing them up into the air and catching them in his mouth. If one dropped on the ground, he ate it anyway. A little dirt didn't hurt anyone.

"So," he started as he paused to toss a berry into his mouth.

"You been at the Weyr long? I just arrived a day or so ago." But he was still just as smart and knowledgeable as everyone else! Of course.

Not really, at all.

Sen shamelessly shoved handfuls of berries in her mouth at a time. The good thing about being a woman in this Weyr was the less you looked like a lady, the less ladylike behavior was expected from you. By that logic, had she been born in a different time, a different place, Sen would have spent most of her time guzzling beer, watching football and trying to get a big screen TV. That would have been the life. Like sitting on the shore, eating berries and being lazy, only without the looming threat of being summoned for more chores always there. Always.

"Hmm." How long had it been? "Not too long," she answered, sounding somewhat unsure. A week wasn't too much time by anyone's standards, was it? "It's alright. Lotta work to do. Don't get too rowdy or you'll get in trouble. That Mirelle lady, I heard she'll make you peel tubers until your hands fall off."

Sure, Elae hadn't said that exactly, but she'd implied it!

Too rowdy? He'd always had a bit of problems with that. By his brothers standards, Bachi was probably exceedingly rowdy.

Hearing about peeling tubers until his hands fell off made his jaw go agape. He made a mental note to never run into this 'Mirelle' ever. He'd find out from some poor chap what she looked like, when she was wherever she was, and steer clear as well as he could.

He would later find out that peeling tubers wasn't so bad; it was the people that he absolutely could not stand having to talk to.

At that moment, however, Bachi was learning one of his first lessons of the Weyr: You live for free days, and they rarely come. He could not know that these berries and this simple, easy conversation would end up trampled by a mountain of tasks ahead of him.

It was probably Balin's dream to have Bachi so preoccupied that he couldn't do anything, but when he gave up on the berries and decided to jump off a high rock into the lake on a full stomach, it was clear that there was still a full day before candidacy would pull Bachi to 'safety'.
