Jevasi sat staring that the pot in front of her for some time after the flighty girl had left. She hadn't recognized her, nor the name she'd announced the gift was from. She just sat there, dumbfounded. In fact, she was so stunned, Meridoth woke from her nap and raised her head inquiringly.
Mine?
She still just sat there, staring at the pot. Was... that what she thought it was? Was that... a flit egg pot?? She didn't move to check it.
Mine? What are you staring at? Sensing that there was no reason for alarm, but eyes still whirling anxiously, she soon had her head stuck in where she could see. Of course, it all made sense then, and Meridoth's anxiety changed to disdain. Oh, that. Why is it here. The emphasis on the word "here" indicated she meant directly in front of her human.

Jevasi blinked. "Actually, I'm not sure why," she answered truthfully, finally moving. She edged forward, but still didn't touch it. "Um... is that what I think it is, Meri?"
Her question had not been properly answered. Having the spawn of those horrid little harassers in her weyr and not being told why it was here made her grouchy. Depends on what you think it is, she replied as near to waspishly as she was likely to get with her Rider. There was something fishy here, and she did not like where this appeared to be going.
The sour attitude of her dragon gave her pause and snapped her out of the very odd occurance. Relenting, she moved away from the pot and went to cradle Meridoth's head. "I'm sorry dear. I really don't know why it is here. Some girl I haven't seen before rushed in, babbled something about it being from someone, and rushed out again." She stroked the green's eyeridges and glanced back towards the pot. "It is what I think it is, isn't it?"
Mollified by her Rider's attention and sensitivity to her feelings, Meridoth felt less like blaming her for the presence of that Offending Article. Even so, she still didn't like it being here. She gave a disdainful snort. Yes, it is an egg. She didn't even bother to say what kind of egg, considering that it was well implied what kind. After all, it wasn't likely to be a wherry egg, and it most certainly wasn't a dragon egg. Can you get rid of it now, Mine? Her entire attitude about the thing roiled about her words, plaintive but also demanding. She did not want that thing in here. Not at all.

"I... don't think I can," she answered slowly. "I do believe that belongs to us now." She could sense Meridoth's deep disgust at the idea. "I know, it isn't something we wanted, but what can we do? It was a gift, and I don't even know who from!" It was hard to give a gift back when it came from a mysterious benefactor. She gave a sigh and picked up the pot.
"I suppose we have to keep it warm now," she muttered. The truth was, despite her shocked and resigned manner, she actually kinda felt vaguely flattered. Even assuming that youngster was acting on the behalf of another candidate, it still was a rather sweet gesture. In fact, Jevasi wasn't sure she'd ever been given a gift like this before. The sensation was so girly and fluttery that it was completely alien to the rough-and-tumble woman.
She set the pot on the hearth in her room and then sat back, still staring at it. She ran a hand through her thick hair, sending it into no more disarray than usual. So. She was to have a firelizard now? Her mind went to the other examples of flits that she'd heard of or known. Some were aggressive and waspish. Others were mischevious and disobedient.
Clearly she'd have to take steps to ensure that this flit was nothing like those bad examples. "We will simply have to teach it to behave," she said aloud to Meri. Her response was a snort and a swift withdrawl of the dragon's head from her room. The grumpy silence on the other end of her mental connection with the green told her that she might have to endure some sour treatment for a while before Meridoth forgave her for this infraction.
With a heavy sigh she sat back and watched the pot sitting next to the flickering fire. This was gonna be a long summer.

It was some weeks later when a rather irritated Meridoth was wakened from her nap. She wasn't usually this grouchy, but the knowledge of that... that... thing being in her weyr just chafed at her. But this afternoon, it was different. Something was changing.
Mine, you really should come here, if you want to keep that abomination of yours, she called sourly to her rider. Now was when the real trhills began. The green was not amused.
Jevasi was finishing off a rather questionable dessert from mid-day meal when Meri's voice in her head called her attention away from the rather soggy sweetbread. Just as happy to leave it, she jumped up from the table with an apologetic wave to the Candidate in charge of clearing tables that afternoon. She poked her nose into the kitchen to request some scraps, quickly explaining the need. With bowl in hand, she strode off towards her weyr with rising excitement.
Admittedly she'd been highly dubious about it at the beginning. However, the more time passed during which she handled the egg daily and took pains to keep it warm. Such interaction could only lead to attatchment. Her dragon, however, had made her point of view on the subject of the flit very clear, and it had not changed the entire time the egg had had residence on their hearth. This didn't hamper Jevasi's heart from beating faster in anticipation, however!
Sure enough, when she got there, the lid had slid off the pot and the egg had rocked loose of most of the sand. Setting the bowl aside, she scrambled to the floor to steady the pot and assess it's state. It was rocking harder by the moment, making her eyes go wide. She tended not to attend the Hatchings (especially with how bloodied and chaotic they'd been lately), so she hadn't seen an egg of any sort hatching in a long while. She'd forgotten the press of excitement. What would it be? Green? Blue?
How about red? Meridoth put in sarcastically, slurring the mental word of 'red' so that it also had inflections of 'dead'.
Jevasi cast a glare at the doorway between her room and Meri's ledge. This egg had turned out to be quite a bone of contention between them, and she was not at all happy about it. But there was nothing to be done about it now. There was no turning back once the egg... cracked! it was cracking!
Meri's attitude forgotten, she waited with inheld breath as the egg's sides crackled and broke away. The little body inside stretched, shattering what was left of the egg and leaving it to plop almost out of the cup. Jevasi gazed down in wonder at the little green. She was beautiful! With swirls of darker green and fadings to softer, paler green, Jevasi couldn't help but coo in delight. (What was it about this egg that brought out her feminine side??)
The little eyes opened, swirling blue and red with hunger. A sweet and questioning meep informed her new owner that she was hungry, and hungry now, and where was the food?
Blindly her human grabbed for the scraps, coming up with three in her hand. Despite the newborn's ravening hunger, she waited to be given one specific piece before she greedily gulped it down. No snappy, snatching biter here. She was a lady, and clearly felt there were certain rules to be followed to show herself as such.
