We just got our music for next marching show, and it stinks! It is too easy on 1st clarinet part, though kind of high. I hate it! I like a challenge. Not much of a challenge really. And theres five of them. It is a real downer compared to our last show, which was not only challenging to the sections who seem to like challenges more but it also featured every secction in some way. This one doesn't feature clarinets at all, and we only play background(odd enough, even for a marching band) and is too easy. Our last show was a rock show with guns n roses, billy idol, bon jovi and acdc. This year it is music of Aaron Copland...

Now, two questions:
Do you like your show?
And:

Do you think I should suggest this show to my BD?:
It is a Journey show, and my song ideas are from a Journey: Greatest Hits CD. They are some of my fav songs.
Opener: Open Arms(or delete and instead Wheel in the sky or Lights)
Lights
Faithfully
Whell in the sky
Closer:Keep on Believin
I think KoB would be a good closerXD

Sorry, I lied. 3 questions if you answer yes to #2
How should I suggest it to him?

give me classical pieces any day. i hate when bands do rock and roll music. Copland has some amazing pieces out there.

Our show music seems okay...it's kind of boring, but it sounds good. We still have two more movements to be given, though. Saxes rest a lot, except playing almost constantly in the ballad, but that probably means that we'll be given a lot of visual work, which is fun. =D

I don't know how your band works, but there's no way that we would ever be able to get our director to change it, mainly because she's not actually in charge. We have a guy writing the music, and a guy writing AMAZING drill and visuals. Ideas for music usually start in the winter, so if we tried to get them to change it...they'd be pissed. xd

I don't really like rock or modern shows or anything, so I'm not to excited about our 80's theme...but they changed up a lot of the music, so it's growing on me. I'd prefer a Copland theme compared to your idea for a show, but that's just me. We played a piece by him for concert band and I liked it.

Hey, you have to remember, the band's not all about clarinets. Times like this you really have to trust your BD's judgement - if the music doesn't challenge you, it probably challenges someone else. I'm sure they're trying their best to put together a show that sounds awesome all around.

If your show ends up stinking up the place at contest, THEN you can rub it in their face. But for now just go with it, you might end up liking it eventually.
You COULD suggest another show, but personally, I doubt it's gonna happen; it might be too late to change, and it might be hard to find music to go with all those songs.

Our band tends to go with pop/rock themes at marching too. This year we're doing a Billy Joel show, I think it'll turn out well. There's even a classical piece he wrote in there.
:3

So no hatin' on rock shows. We're one of the few that does well with them.

Hm, it seems I've been a bit misunderstood on some things.
First of all, I love classsical music with a passion, and have nothing agaisnt Aaron Copland and persoanlly love his music. I just hate the 1st clarinet part for the songs we are playing.
Next, I know not everything is about clarinets, but we need a bit of love now and again. This is one fo the first shows I have seen without even a measure of melody or sub-melody in it. We are almost at the bass part the whole time, even on the chorale and ballad.
Third, I wouldn't be suggesting the Journey theme for this coming ear, as a switch from the one we are going to do. I'm talking about next year, after the Copland theme.
Lastly, I think rock shows are amazing if done corectly. They can be really fun, however the band has to be able to play it or they will hate it and so will the audience. My band is definately capable of rock shows. We got straight excellents right from the getgo with our show last year, and had a lot of fun during rehearsals working on it. The only reason we didn't get superiors was because there were a select few who neve rpracticed, and in a band of only 75 people, just one person not knowing their part or marching flatfooted can bring the whole banddown a number of points. Luckily, most of those few were kicked out of band, graduated, or are ineligible for this next season and will therefore be alternates if they are lucky.

We never had alternates in my band. But sorry it's boring for you. But your BD chose this and this is his decision.

Ah, that's understandable. For the parts of our show so far, saxes do a lot of resting, except for the ballad. The only comfort I take in it is that it means that we'll be doing a lot of visual work...maybe it's the same with your band?

To be honest, I've never seen a rock show that I've really been impressed with at a competition, but maybe the bands that I live around suck at them? xd I've seen a couple I liked on youtube, though. I'm just extremely picky.

If you looka t the "Your shows on youtube?" Thread, you can find my show there I think. I should have put it up.

Main problem is, clarinets aren't resting almost at all on our show. We are playing almost the whole time, but what we are playing is at the hardest eighth notes...

OMG!!! i so wanted to do Journey!!!!!
i love that band. DO IT!!!!

as for your other question....
Do you like your show?

well, last year was my last in marching band (i graduated) and we played a Chicago show.
it was
all that jazz
cell block tango
and Roxie
it was fun.....for the first month. then everyone was so sick of it we got together and wrote alternate lyrics for the songs and it was fairly hilarious.
(also somewhat obscene due to high school boy mentalitys so i cant share them with you.)

My director lets us have a swaying opinion on what show he picks for us.

This year he was dead-set on a classical show (past two rock shows, the judges hated them, so...), so he let us listen to a few and decide which one we liked more.

Maybe suggest doing something like the above for next year?
And not every song has hard parts for every instrument. Just...deal with it. :<

For example: our second song is really easy but our third one is ridiculously hard. The opener doesn't sound like it's that bad but idk yet.

I can understand wanting a Journey show, though. xd Our whole band is obsessed with them. We're actually playing a part of Don't Stop Believin' in our show, and the pit has a warm-up from a Journey song.

Yeah, I is a huge journey fan. They are having a concert in my town on sunday, but I don't have a ticket. My dad was trying to win us some on a radio thing. Oh well. I'm not fond of the new singer though. I like the old one, and we have a Journey: greatest hits cd from when the old one was still there.

At least you have your show. Band camp starts the 12th for us, and we still have no idea what our show is. Although I heard it's been picked now, as my roomie is the drum major. He's just not really allowed to tell me.

Eh classical rock songs are too common with marching bands though, suggest something classical or from a unknown movie.
