Maki was wandering, the bright green lioness had left Nifu’s side to be on her own. She wasn’t sure why the older blue male hadn’t left yet, he kept saying that he’d be gone when she woke up but then he was always there in the mornings. She shook her head, his reasons didn’t matter and worrying over them wouldn’t help any. Twitching her tail she lifted her blue eyes and scanned the Savannah, she wondered where exactly she was. They had been traveling for weeks and she had lost track of their position.
Spotting a sparkle a few yards away she perked up, the glint was the sun reflecting off water and she wouldn’t mind stopping by the water hole. The lioness picked up her pace not bothering to check if anyone else was nearby as she approached. She stopped at the water’s edge and dipped her muzzle to the water’s surface before she lapped at the water greedily. She stood there a bright green dot against the dirt surrounding the waterhole.

Al-Hattal had recently enjoyed a bath - an occasional necessity for a handsome lion such as himself - and had been sunning himself dry for the last hour or so. Drying his mane always took forever, and left him a little fluffy besides, but maintaining his attractiveness was well worth the minor annoyance.
He was dozing a little ways off in the grass when the soft sounds of movement caught his ears, and something very brightly colored caught his half-lidded gaze.
...well. A lioness! Now all he had to do was get up.

After drinking her fill Maki lifted her head, ears twitching. She didn't hear anything but now that she had paused she caught the scent of another lion on the air. Breathing deeply she looked in the direction the wind was coming from and spotted a dark mound. The lioness tilted her head and peered harder at the mound, and after a moment she realized the mound was breathing. Oh, it must be another lion, I should go and say hello.
Smiling she padded towards him stopping a safe distance away. It didn't enter her mind that he might be dangerous, but she didn't want to startle him. "Hello there!" Even as she called out her voice wasn't all that loud. She was a quiet lioness, she couldn't even remember a time when she had ever roared.

...and before he could manage to rouse himself, she noticed him! And she seemed to be friendly, which was important. Even with all his charm, there were some ladies that were just a lost cause. Some just weren't receptive, to say the least.
Pretending to have woken when he heard her soft call, he lifted his head, casting his ears forward with interest and smiling. After a moment, he rose into a sit. "Good afternoon, Miss!"

When he awoke she smiled, tilting her head slightly. She was happy that he didn't seem upset by her intrusion. She padded forwards stopping close enough so that she didn't have to call out to him. The green lioness lowered herself onto her haunches, curling her tail around herself.
"Good afternoon to you as well!" Her smile widened, he was so polite, not like Nifu who was gruff and short with her. "I'm Makini'mnong'ono, but just Maki is fine."

Goodness! She was quite a bright shade of green, wasn't she? And with quite the name to go with it. He often wondered at the appeal of such long names, although he didn't really have any room to talk that one. He'd given his son - the only one he'd ever had anything to do with, anyway - a bit of a mouthful as well.
"That's a beautiful name you have, Maki," he said. "I am Al-Hattal - or Al-Ha, if you wish."

Maki had never really stopped to think about how long her name was, it was the one her mother had given her and she'd had it all her life. She had become accustomed to it's length herself, but knowing others tended to consider it a mouthful she usually gave her nickname along with her full name. Her ears flickered, turning towards him to catch his words.
"Thank you, Al-Ha." She smiled, most said her name was confusing not beautiful, but she wasn't going to pass up a compliment. Her eyes glanced around the Savannah checking for anyone that could be sneaking up on them, seeing no one they settled back on the black lion. "It's a pleasure to meet you, especially on such a nice day as this." It truly was a nice day, the sun was shining and there was a mild breeze that kept her from getting too hot.

It was quite the mouthful, that was for certain, but that didn't really make it a bad name. The only annoyance would have been if she insisted on being called by the whole thing, rather than a shortened form. Either way, compliments never really went amiss.
"It is a lovely day, isn't it?" He gave only a cursory look at his surroundings to go with that statement, before settling his gaze back on the bright lioness. "All the more lovely for the company, truly."

Maki nodded, it was very nice, and it was nice being with someone who wasn't Nifu. Her tail flicked from side to side and she tilted her head slightly trying to come up with something to keep the conversation alive. She had become a bad conversationalist after traveling with Nifu so long, all the blue lion did was sleep and grunt out a couple of words, she didn't understand why she cared for him, but she supposed she couldn't help it.
"Yes, but company is almost always pleasant." She paused and then smiled. "Would you like to go for a walk?"

"Whatever the lady would like," he said by way of agreement, and rose to a stand. Going for a walk could have all sorts of pleasant endings, by his way of thinking. And he could do with a good stretch after his nap, anyway.

Maki smiled widely, she liked this black lion, he was polite and generally seemed to like her. She began to walk, looking over at him as she did. "So, Al-Ha, tell me about yourself" She had to admit she was curious about the lion, she wasn't used to this kind of treatment after all.

"There isn't terribly much to tell, really," he said with a chuckle, keeping pace beside the bright lioness. "I'm just a wanderer who can never quite seem to stop."

Maki couldn't help but laugh softly herself, she happened to be a wander as well. "That's funny, me and my..." She trailed off a moment unsure of what to call Nifu, finally she settled on "friend are the same, I've been wandering all my life and he joined me a couple seasons ago. He keeps asking me where were going and I have to keep telling him that I have no idea." She smiled softly, Nifu was hard headed like that.

The hesitation was impossible to miss, and it wasn't hard to guess what it meant. She'd said 'friend,' sure, but that kind of pause led him to believe it might be more. Or that she wanted it to be more, or something along those lines. In that moment of pause, he was made aware that he probably didn't have much of a chance.
Still, Al-Hattal laughed. "It's really not about where you're going - who says you have to have a destination?"

Maki couldn't stop the hesitation when she spoke of Nifu, the old lion was just so confusing! He said he wanted to leave almost everyday, but then in the mornings he was always there. Shaking her head she brought herself back to the male at hand.
She smiled at his words, "That's true, and at least traveling is fun...settling down somewhere would be boring." She wondered what else they could talk about to fill the silence. "So, do you travel alone or have a companion?"
