Am I a "modernist," or pagan poser, just because I'm pro disection? This queery has been plaguing me for some time now. If you would be so kind as to give at the very least a brief reason behind you response it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think so. Dissection allows humans to know more about animal anatomy. I think most pagans would support knowing more about our animal cousins. But I could be wrong. *shrug*

I'm all for dicing up little animals in science class. ^_^ People that are for carving up animals could fall into just about every catagory except PETA.

So, no pro dissection doesn't make you a pagan poser. Not unless you start talking about ritualist mutilation whilst driving scapel into teh skull of the poor froggy.

I would assume it would all be your view on it. I personally don't want to disect anything for biology until university, but you could.

I don't see anything wrong with being pro-disection and pagan.
Every pagan I've met has always been someone who enjoyed aquiring new knowledge, and some knowledge is best learned through such methods.
Some may say the knowledge is especifically directed to paganism, but in order to really value anything you read that applies to it and any spiritual nature for that matter you need to be willing to grasp and understand the workings of the things around you. They are what helped set up what our beliefes are and why the are the way they are.
So no, there's nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

What's wrong with dissection in the first place? As long as the subject is dead of course. sweatdrop I'm a Christian. Does dissection really have to do with pagan beliefs?

I don't have anything against dissection. I can;t physically hurt another living thing. It just makes me so unbelievably sad. I nearly threw up in my science room when we had to dissect a frog. I just bear the thought of another living thing in pain or having its remains disrespected. I know I'm weird. But I don't see how disection contradicts Pagan beliefs.... unless by pagan you mean the wiccan/witchcraft kind of paganism as opposed to actual paganism.

I don't know much about paganism, but I don't see why you can't. As long as you're treating the animal with respect instead of doing stuff to it like stab it's eyes out and make it dance or break it's legs or whatever (this happened once in my Middle school science class - the boy I was working with did that to the frog we were supposed to be disecting for laughs). And if it can help advance medicine, I'm all for it.

I choose not to disect because I'm a vegetarian (have been for almost 2 years now) and I know I'm not going into a science related field.

My mother once went to a Wiccan celebration where they had lobster. They each took their live lobster, put it in the pot, and watched it cook. (The point was to recognize the life lost, not to torture the lobsters.) As long as you recognize that the animal you dissect died to increase your knowledge, and respect that, I don't think you're a poser. Knowledge helps improve the world.
