A question that has been lurking in my mind for a while is,"How long does it take you to memorize your marching band music?"

For me, personally, it take around maybe two weeks at the most... Especially this year since they didn't really give the Baritones/Trombones a difficult part. It's gonna be weird actually having so many rests in my music this year.. -sigh-

ALSO, what would be some tips for memorizing music?

Depends how hard the music is but like it take me about 4 days to memorize the rhythms to my school's marching music.

Less than a day. Once I can play it well, I play it in my head over and over and over and over...memorization is just a natural habit for me. I still remember some stuff I played in fourth grade... xd It's helpful, but it can get pretty annoying.

It depends a lot on if I like my part. With things I really enjoy playing it takes me a day or two, but if I don't like it as much (because I still love playing =P), then it takes a few more days or so, depending on how hard it is.

About a week for 3 pieces of music(half pages),except this year i have to memorize 3 pieces(full pages) of music and about 50 pages of drill,so it's going to take longer. It is going to a long and tough season, considering how the band director switched schools after a year, and the band is director-less.

It depends on how often I practice, and how hard the song is.
Our second song this year took me a few days.
Our closer is taking FOREVER though because I had camp and that took away from my time for practicing it.

Now it takes maybe about a week if I acutally practice everyday for like 15 minutes.

A tip I find that helps me memorise is I get a copy of the music on my Ipod so I can listen to it and get it into my head.

My freshman year is a different story, I still dont have it all memorized and Im going to be a junior...>.<

I can get a general concept of it but I memorize through rehearsal, I learn better when I hear the other parts around me. I also listen to the music a lot and learn where my part fits in.

This year it has taken me three days to memorize the music, three movements. I missed the first day of band camp and I still got it memorized.

It usually takes me about two weeks to memorize all of the music, assuming we've gotten all the music by that point. I memorize by repetition, so after I've played the music so many times, it just sort of sticks. Plus I play mallets, so I want to memorize the music as quickly as possible so I can concentrate on looking at the instrument to make sure I'm hitting all of the right notes, and then move on to being able to play without looking at the marimba or what have you.

My advice for memorizing music is repetition, repetition, repetition. Also, our section did an activity once where we went through and covered up a few measures here and there and then tried to play the entire piece/show. After each rep, we'd hide a few more measures and try again. If we screwed up, we could take a glance at the measure(s) we missed. We'd keep doing this until everyone could play at least the majority of the show without looking at the music. It's also a good thing to try if you're by yourself, too, so long as you've got your instrument handy.

Well for me, I can't memorize it if I play so before I play it I just view for a couple of days and then I get it, it also helps me when the whole band is together it makes me remember better and helps me with the long rest :3

I don't actually know how long it takes me. I just know that whenever I decide to try playing it from memory, it's there. I memorize really quickly. I was always first in my section at college to have things memorized. My poor section leader...

ill switch with you we have like at least one part in each song where the low brass is the main part and since we only have 6 low brass in a band of like 27 (not including colorgaurd) we sound sorta bad
