Sitting still next to a empty wicker basket the pale colt sat cloudy-eyed in the lush grass. His mother had wandered only a short distance in order to try and find food and in the mean time left his delicate but rather bulky body hidden snug among the forest's towering undergrowth. Icy blue eyes shot a glance at the nearby set of baskets, his mother had called them 'siblings', although he had no use for the term, he took it to mean they were supposed to matter to him, more than most others would. The colt took in a deep breath and attempted to take to his feet. Once, twice, even three times and still, managing to fall back on his spade tail each time. Huffing a quick, short burst of frustration he yet again took to his hooves, this time without fail.
Smiling at his accomplishment he carefully placed one set of hooves in front of the others and began slowly moving away from the baskets. Minutes later he stood in a shorter patch of grass in between fair sized trees that gave a nice view of the sky above. His gaze wandered from left to right, taking in all that was around him. It was so different to see things instead of just using his hearing like he had whilst in his basket, the whole world was alive, much more than he could have imagined.

A young, unikalona mare looked around slowly, her pupiless eyes had an eerie glow to them. Blood stained her lips from her previous meal. She shuffled her wings, which were tattered by a harsh stallion that had helped give her life. Morana trained to be a killer, but disappointed her teacher, her father, on various occassions. Her thoughts were quickly pushed aside when she caught the scent of another creature. Would it be her dessert? A blood soaked lip curled up slight, revealing her blood stained fangs. Her tail lashed behind her quickly as she walked in the direction the scent came from.
Morana noticed a figure in the distance and smirked slightly. It was a young kalona foal, yes he would make a fine desert. Suddenly, something changed in the mare's appearance. Her eyes dulled slightly as she approached the young looking foal. His legs were awkwardly long and Morana couldn't help but wonder where his mother was. 'Kill him! He is weak and an easy kill,' A voice inside her head told Morana. He was only a foal, how could she kill him? As she approached the foal, she looked down at his small body and smiled softly, revealing her blood stained fangs once again. "Hello, little one." Her unicorn blood would not let herself kill this helpless foal.

The colt, slightly stunned by the sudden appearance of someone other than his own mother, took a step back on his feeble legs and then regained what sturdiness he'd previously held onto. Taking a once over glance at the large female in front of him as her words reached his tiny ears he flicked his spade tail as his mother did hers when she listened to him speak. This strange female was oddly familiar, perhaps it was her tail or her wings, similar to his in all their design but it sparked his foal-like interest none the less. Taking a second he realized that she seemed to be more like him than his own mother, after all, his mother didn't have his tail...or his wings...she didn't have wings at all. Pondering this he quickly reverted back to the current situation and tried his best to sound, well, more grown up than his childish voice would allow.
"H-ello..."
He was not too good with words yet, while he could think them, it was hard to do much but mimic others just yet. Her teeth, he noted, were two-toned, how odd. Perhaps, when his mother returned he could ask her all about these questions that now so deeply engulfed his thoughts. Stretching his wings once he stood still, allowing his awkward legs to almost appear sturdy.
"I-"
Oh bother, what was that his mother spoke to him as he first arrived from that wicker basket. Her soft words said something, a gesture of teaching, a beginning to his own being, what was that...oh yes!
"I- S-s-aint Aug-august-ine."

Her huge wings folded at her side as she looked down at the little colt. When she noticed the basket near him, Morana smiled softly. He obviously wasn't that old and seemed a little fearful of her at first. She scanned the foal quickly to make sure that so far nothing bad had happened to him. He didn't deserve to be hurt at such a young age. Morana allowed her head to lower slightly, but not low enough to where she would accidentally hit the foal with her horn if she got too close to him. Her tail lazily hung by her side as she let her pupiless eyes look to the colt's blue eyes.
She smiled when he spoke. He either knew to respect older kalona or wasn't as cruel as other kalona foals were. Why didn't he act like other kalona foals? This puzzled her and made her want to know more about the little white colt.
Morana couldn't help but smile when he spoke and then told her his name. Her tail lashed a bit when she heard his name then nodded her head gently. "I'm Morana." Was she speaking too fast for the colt? She would soon find out. 'He would make a delicious desert.'

"M-M-"
This talking business, it was definitely a tricky thing to master but he'd get it down eventually, of this Saint was sure. For the time at hand however, the colt's words were anything but steady and witty. It dawned on him then, the word his own mother had used just a short while before this female had arrived, the word that described what each of them had spoken to each other. 'Name,' He thought to himself. A way to put individualize a face than just it's physical features. Smiling his lips paused, again trying to form her name from his own tongue.
"M-Mor-Morana. It's...N-n-nice."
There. While not perfect he was quickly gaining headway on speech, perhaps by the time his mother came back he would be filling her ears with his voice. Saint smiled at his accomplishment, obviously proud he had done something correct, personal satisfaction at it's finest. He looked at the female again; up, down, and up once more, focusing on how some of her features were distinct and then others were a match to his own. He couldn't quite understand why Morana appeared more like himself than his own mother, but it didn't phase him, just interest him more to know how this world worked.
Mirroring her ability to fold her wings to her side Saint almost seemed to be swatting his tail back and forth as though it were made of hair instead of muscle. His mother did that with her own, flicking it and swaying it from side to side, it seemed the correct action. He cocked his small head to the left as his gaze met her horn, stationed in the middle of her forehead, a strange addition to one's body. Mom didn't have one, and he certainly didn't either. Wondering just quite where it came from he shifted to look back into her empty eyes.
"Wa-Whas-What's at...What's that?"

This was a new learning experience for Morana. She had never had a run in with a foal so young before. Why did his mother leave him here alone? The unikalona mare raised her head slowly and watched the foal's movements. His movements were awkward and strange, but that was expected from someone that had been trapped in a basket for so long. Soon he would forget what it was like to be in that basket and would be running by like the rest of the older foals did.
Her pure white ears quickly twisted towards him to pick up whatever he said. "Your name is nice also." She said as she glanced around quickly to make sure this foal's mother or father didn't come to fetch him and find her talking to him. It seemed some mothers and fathers were more protective of their foals than others were. They must not be too protective if they just left him alone like this.
When he spoke again, her eyes drifted towards him. She noticed his bright blue eyes looking up at her horn. "It is a horn. I use it to protect myself." Of course, she used it for a few other things, but she didn't like to think about that at the moment. The voice that was telling her to kill the foal had almost disappeared completely. Her unicorn blood was taking control for the moment, but sooner or later the kalona blood would take control once again.

A horn. He thought about the concept of needing something other than mere strength, intelligence and of course your teeth to keep oneself from injury. It was a smart move, although he assumed she used her rather large teeth and other common items to fend away attackers, a horn would certainly do the trick. Saint swatted his tail onto the ground again in a somewhat playful manner before slowly trotting once around Morana, all in good jest. She was nice, just like mom, kind. After coming back to her front the colt glanced up at her again.
"Can...Wh-where can I f-fi-find a horn?"
Still a colt in most respects besides just physically he didn't quite know this wasn't something acquired through travel or won in some game. His white ears perked up, listening for any sounds of his mother. She'd left only a short while before he had met this female, but he half wondered if somewhere she was watching. Mom didn't seem the type to not watch, to not pro-protect her children from the unknown, but he knew Morana now...maybe mom did too. Being so young to the world had few advantages when left alone, but innocence kept his natural Kalona traits at bay, at least for the time at hand. Never had his mother brought him meat, nor had he even gone far enough to see a dead animal to which he might recognize the scent of blood. No, for now he was as pure as his Cerynei mother.

Morana watched as the colt circled her. If he were older she would've found this as a threat, but obviously he meant no harm at the moment. Her tail lashed once when he returned in front of her. She lowered her head and sniffed the foal, taking in his scent and making a mental note, then lifted her head up again. Morana liked the colt and how innocent he seemed to be, innocent and naive.
The unikalona mare couldn't help but giggle a little at his words. "I was born with my horn. You have two horns, Saint." He was obviously a pure kalona, unlike herself. She hoped he wouldn't turn out like some of the others that thought they were better than everyone simply because they were pure kalona. Morana pushed the thought aside and looked around once more, not only to make sure that the foal was safe but to make sure she was safe as well. Something about this foal wanted to make her stay around a bit. The only problem was that she couldn't stay around much longer in case his mother came back.

"Two horns."
He parroted only part of her words whilst taking a moment to turn his eyes just far enough to see the ends of his curved golden horns. They weren't like hers was, he had two. Was it better to have two? He left it to the future to give him that answer, for now, he'd keep focused on the present. Saint's blue eyes caught on to her movement, she was studying her surroundings, this was a smart move...he had watched his own mother do it quite a few times so far. The colt wondered for a moment what the adults knew to watch for, but it probably wasn't anything they'd explain to him anyways. He had asked his mother about her constant surveillance and she merely turned the conversation to another one, obviously avoiding telling him about the bad parts of life just yet.
"Do you know my mom?"
First sentence that he had managed to get out in full form all day, a nice feat for himself. Morana didn't seem much like his mother, her coat was different, she had wings and a tail and her teeth were strangely sharper in appearance...but it didn't mean that she didn't at least know his mother. Not everyone, as he was learning, was related that knew each other. Some were simply, friends.

For the moment, she found it her duty to keep an eye for this foal. He was obviously just learning things and didn't seem to know to fear kalonas like they were. Lucky for the foal she had unicorn blood in her, if she hadn't he would probably no longer be living. Instead of making herself comfortable, she stayed sharp and aware of her surroundings. Every sound made, her ear twitched in its direction and if it was close enough, she would glance in the noise's direction. When he spoke, one ear turned towards him as another flicked towards a noise and her tail lashed behind her. It was a warning sign to whatever was making the noise.
"I don't think I do," Morana said simply as her large tail lashed a bit more then hit the ground roughly. She was new to these lands and didn't know anyone around here, besides this little foal. It was a bit sad when one could say their only acquaintance from a place was a new born colt. This colt only seemed to talk about his mother... where was his father? Maybe it was best that she didn't ask.

"Mom doesn't have m-ma-many friends..."
He actually hadn't seen his mother with anyone else since he'd first arrived to this world. Although he assumed this was normal, it seemed strange at first knowing he had siblings, and wondering if perhaps his mother did too. It struck him to ask her when she returned, if in fact she did have friends, or family that he had yet to meet. Tipping his head slightly the colt shivered as her tail hit the ground, the harsh noise and quick movement made his body react, frightened if only for a moment. Quickly he regained his firm stance and his ears twitched, noticing the noise that she had.
"What s'at?"
Saint had once more slurred his words, but the message came across and therefore he saw no reason to fix it. Even as a colt the small Kalona knew fear, knew passion and most importantly, knew to be alert. His white wings were still folded to his side however the slender muscles seemed to tighten, although he didn't know it...he was born capable of flight...to which also brought a slightly normal instinct to fly when frightened. The colt's mind was already in turmoil, Kalona or Cerynei? To fight was in his blood, as was to kill...but he didn't know as much, and hadn't had a reason to.

"I'm sure she has friends, she just hasn't let them meet you yet," the mare said simply as her tail lashed behind her for a moment then lazily rested at her side again. Her pupiless eyes noted when the foal seemed to shiver. Right, she needed to be a bit more gentle while around the new foal. She flicked her ears to catch whatever he was saying and she glanced over her shoulder then looked back at him. "No idea, but better safe than sorry I guess," the unikalona said softly to the colt as she looked down at him.
Morana shuffled her wings, simply to allow blood to flow through them once again. She flicked an ear every now and then as she watched the foal's movements. The young mare eyed the colt's strange markings and golden colored horns. They would be useful to him later in life. His wings would also be useful to him, once he learned how to use them and once they became strong enough for him to use. She glanced at her tattered wings, then quickly turned her head away from them to look at the colt. Memories flooding her mind from a horrid past. Hopefully this colt would never go through the same things she did. "Where did your mother go?"

"To get...
Saint paused, trying to remember the word again that his mother had used. It was food, something she said would taste good..oh right,
"To get apples. I do-don't know what they are, but she said they're good."
He hadn't a taste for blood or flesh yet, his mother didn't know he'd ever need to have such a craving fulfilled and it certainly wasn't in her power to do such a thing. Eventually, as most Kalona do, he'd be eating the meat of small game and such but until someone told him otherwise he wouldn't know it to be common. Playing with his tail the colt merely paused, thinking if perhaps his mother did have friends, he hoped so.
"I guess she has friends. I've only met my brother and sister...oh, and daddy too. He looked at me weird, I don't think he likes me."
His voice considerably lowered as the last few words rolled off his tongue, this wasn't so much a sore subject..but just the same it was odd for him to say. He didn't know much about other families, or what the norm was, but he assumed fathers were supposed to like mothers and their children. The evening he had seen his father for the first time he had been busy talking to another colt similar to himself, but he noted the way his father playfully nipped at his sister's hind quarters and kept a watchful eye on his other sister. Even his brother had gotten only pleasurable reactions, but instead of those, Saint had listened in to his mother having to defend raising him. Was there something off about him? No, mother loved him just as he was, everything about him was perfect, even mom had said so...
"...Mom says I'm perfect, but I don't think daddy thinks so."
He added in, letting only a slight hint of further thoughts in his mind slip.

Morana's mind jumbled for a moment. A kalona colt eating... apples? Wouldn't his mother want to give him meat as soon as she could so his stomach would be able to digest it? Her tail lashed behind her as she thought about this. She wouldn't be the one to tell the colt he was supposed to eat meat. What a strange family they seemed to be. Of course, she couldn't talk. Everything about her was a bit strange. Her way of acting, her father and her mother, the way she looked, everything...
He looked like a pure breed kalona, so why wouldn't his father be proud of him? Of course, her brother, or what she remembered of him, looked like a pure breed unicorn. Maybe his mother was a kalona and his father was something else, but if his father loved a kalona mare then why would his father give him a strange look? She shook her head and tried not to confuse herself anymore than she already was. "Your daddy probably just isn't used to you... You are a perfect little foal." Well, compared to her, he was perfect.

Saint smiled, obvious, even to the small colt, she was wondering some of the same questions he did. None the less she was offering a kind word, something he could use in most situations that appeared rotten. Perhaps it was that his father wasn't sure how to react to his wings, both mom and dad didn't have them...yes, that ought to be a good reason for his stand-off behavior. At least, this would suit the colt's mind for the time being. Flipping the spade part of his tail around he nodded, happy that his first encounter with anyone but his family was actually friendly.
"Yeah, t-that must be it. I think it's 'cause I h-have wings. Mom and dad don't, and neither do any of my siblings. Maybe that's i-it."
