Last night I had the great pleasure of seeing this years production of the Phantom of the Opera in Denver. Our dear Erik was played by Gary Mauer, Marie Danvers was casted as Christine and John Cudia played Raoul. They were all fantastic singers with amazing voices...however, 90% of the notes were sung in a pure, ear piercing vibrato. Like this! "aLl i wANt iS FReEdom, a wOrLD wiTH No mORe nIGhT!" neutral ......I know they're suppose to sing it like that, for the sake of Opera, but I couldn't enjoy the show as much as I thought I would. Even when I saw it five years ago they didn't sing it with so much vibrato! Mauer was indeed the best singer in the cast, but he was so harsh during MoTN that it made me groan....I don't know if it was suppose to be that way....oh well sweatdrop . Did anyone else see Gary Mauer? And if so, what did you think of his performance?

I love John Cudia's Raoul. I only wish that the tour would come near where I live so I could spoil myself -- but, alas. He truly is one of the better Raouls out there.
I saw Gary Mauer only a few months after he joined the tour and I wasn't much impressed. I saw him three times, but he did get at least a little better each time I saw him. Acting-wise, he wasn't half-bad and his voice was actually rather lovely, except for the one, sorely irritating fact that he used so much vibratto. That was what ruined it for me. Oddly enough, the last night I saw him, he cut most of it and the performance was fantastic.
I'd be interested in seeing how he's developed now that he's had a couple years under his belt.

Gary Mauer will probably become better as time goes on as you said. I did really like John Cudia's performance of Raoul.....but I still can't stand Marie Danvers for Christine. My friend Kelsey gushed over Gary Mauer the rest of the night after we saw it, but yes, way to much virbrato....why do they use so much virbrato?

Personally, I think because it's supposed to make them sound "operatic."
Also, there are people that like a lot of vibratto -- something about it being natural human beauty or something along those lines.

It does sound beautiful if they use a little virbrato. Several other musicans I talked to in my band all cried "Why can't they just hold one note?" *shrugs* It did make it sound very operatic, but I can't remember, isn't POTO in a "rock opera" style?

My guess would be that they use so much vibratto because it's easier to sing that way when you have to really belt it out, as is frequently required in POTO. It takes more muscle control and attention to projection to sing without vibratto.
I saw Gary Mauer when he first joined the tour and I'm not sorry to say I laughed myself silly the entire time. His voice isn't bad, but he had this weird habit of shouting every other word. I think I actually fell out of my seat and into the aisle from the effort to contain my hysterics when he did that pervy, "TOUCH MEE! Truuuust mee... *leer*"
*snrks* Ah, good times... Good times...

Yeah, you're totally right about MoTN....when I heard him sing I wanted to cry....he totally ruined in for me. In PoNR it was funny because he kept looking at Christine and then looking away and clunching his fists, not as perverted as him feeling her up but pretty bad. whee
I still think it wouldv'e been much better if he did have the muscle control you mentioned and just hold the note once in a while.

I saw it in Denver too! What night did you see it?
I HATED Marie Danvers as Christine, but otherwise I liked it. Carlotta was my favorite....what was her name? *roots around for program*
Also, I wasn't a huge fan of Meg, because her voice didn't have the sweet innocent quality it needs.
As for Gary Mauer, I too noticed that he shouted every other word. That bugged me, but other than that I thought he was great.

That's what bootlegs are for, Bakatulip. *coughs* I've acquired some clips of Mauer and he's not that bad on them, so I don't know... It'd be kinda neat to see Mauer perform with Elizabeth Southard, though. I've heard they have great chemistry, being married and all. Quote: In PoNR it was funny because he kept looking at Christine and then looking away and clunching his fists, not as perverted as him feeling her up but pretty bad. Mauer: " sweatdrop Must... not... grope..."There are so many different interpretations of that bench scene. Personally, I'm a phan of Brad Little's, but that's just me.

Epp! sorry I haven't been here for awhile, my computer broke
Anyway...I saw it on November 15, what night did you see it?
I really hated that woman as Christine too. But my favorite Phantoms I've seen so far go as: 1. Michael Crawford (of course) 2. Gerard Butler (I though he did good *shrugs*) 3, Brad Little (I love him!) 4. Gary Mauer (hated it, amazing voice..if he used it.)
"Must not...grope." So very true, you hit it on the nail!

Random thought... I wonder if Mauer's wife gets at all jealous if he feels up the other actresses in PONR? Maybe that's why he doesn't do it.
Michael Crawford is awesome. I have a bootleg of him that's my pride and joy. The man did things with that role that have never been equalled.
Brad Little is my favorite american Phantom. (I've noticed that, on average, the america casts are worse than those of any other country.) He's just so expressive with his hands and body... It makes him great fun to watch.
Mauer... hmm.. Well, at least he didn't drool.

Well, at least he didn't drool. True about the American casts. I just think you can't beat out the orignal. Michael Crawford is the Angel of Music...or at least my Angel of Music. I watched that "High School Musical" on the DisneyChannel (don't ask why) but one of the character Mom's saw the orignal Phantom 37 times and taped a picture of Michae Crawford inside her fridge. I thought that was humoress. Agrre with you again on Brad Little, he is nothing short of amazing either. I thought his performance was very convincing...I wish I could see him do it again crying Agreed with you Morbid Dreams....why did it have to end? cry
