Sonata walked along the riverbank, kicking stones and grumbling to herself, wings hung limply at her sides. There was nothing to do today! She was so bored she could just flop over and die. Even that would be more entertaining than doing absolutely nothing. She didn't even feel like flying today either, or singing. Normally she was more than happy to spend a lazy afternoon soaring on the winds and singing songs... but not today. The little foal heaved a sigh. Surely there was something she could do, something new and exciting, like an adventure! But adventures were no fun without someone to go on an adventure with. Absentmindedly she kicked stones for another minute or two, thinking to herself.

Not watching where she was going Sonata had walked up onto a high bank that bordered the river, and proceeded to fall right off of it. "Aaahh!" She screamed as she fell into the water. The stream was only a few feet deep here, so she scrambled up onto her feet and galloped onto dry land, spashing and sending water everywhere. She plopped down on the sand and felt like wailing. Now she was bored AND wet. "Think think think..." she told herself. "There HAS to be something to do!"

Dhanny was racing along a new stretch of land, a river he hadn't explored yet. He was training, always training, so that he would be strong enough to fly one day. Having inherited his father's wings, he knew that someday he would be expected to join his dad in the big blue sky, and he was both excited and somewhat terrified about the coming of that day.

As he raced along, he wondered if he would meet anyone new. So far, he'd met only a few Soquili outside his immediate family, though he knew there were many others out in the big world. His family was large too, according to his parents, with lots of cousins and aunts and uncles. His mother had smiled and told him that he was an uncle as well, but he didn't really believe her. After all, how could he be an uncle to those older than him? It just didn't work that way. Or so he thought.

As he ran along the bank of the river, he spotted a very wet, slightly unhappy filly. She was very blue, more so than he was. He slowed his pace to a gentle trot, and slid to a stop as he neared her. "Um...hi there! Why are you so wet? Did you...fall in? I hope not, that water looks cold!" Finally, he met another foal like him! He might find a playmate in this filly, and the prospect made his hooves dance with excitement.

"I'm Dhanuraja, but you can call me Dhanny. My name's a bit of a mouthful. What's your name?"

Sonata looked up as she heard someone talking to her, and suddenly the day seemed a whole lot better. The other foal had wings and was blue! Just like her! He looked smaller than her, probably a bit younger. She wondered if he could fly yet, she had only just started a few weeks ago. She almost belted out a song in excitement, but she figured that might scare away her potential new playmate. She made a face, "I'm wet 'cause I fell in the river, I wasn't looking where I was going and I walked off that ridge." She grinned, it sounded so funny now that she was saying it out loud.

"Dhanja, Dhuranaja?" Sonata frowned, and said, "Yeah, lets just stick with Dhanny. You're real name is more than a mouthful, its like, two mouthfuls! And I'm Sonata!" She trilled her name, she liked to add a bit of flair to it when she introduced herself. "I'm from a family of singers, well, except my Da, his name is Nirvana." She chuckled, "He couldn't carry a tune if his life depended on it. My Mom has always tried to teach him, but after the first few notes she gives up cause she says he hurts her ears."

"You fell off a ridge? Are you alright?" Dhanny asked, a concerned expression on his face. Perhaps she couldn't fly yet, either, if she was falling off of ridges. Then again...maybe she could fly, just didn't think to.

He laughed softly when she struggled with his name. "It's okay. That's why I have a nickname! Daddy says that I'm named like him, although his name is a LOT easier to say. His name is Karma, which is nothing like my name." Dhanny shrugged. "But who am I to say how our names are related?"

"Singers, huh? That's pretty impressive! But your dad's not a singer. You know, his name sounds a lot like my dad's! I wonder if they know each other?"

Sonata sighed, she felt so silly falling off cliffs and things. "Yes, I'm alright." She grinned, and added, "Only my pride is hurt." Sonata thought for a moment as Dhanny talked about his dads name and his name, and said, "You know, I think your names are related. Your real name is a sort of buddhist name, I know that 'cause my older sister has a name like yours. We just call her Bodhi. And karma is sort of like divine luck, and its also sorta buddhist in origin. I think..." She shrugged, she was by no means an expert on how names related to each other.

She was more than happy to steer the conversation away from falling and thinking about names, "Yes! I love singing, its so much fun!" She grinned. "Yeah, the rest of my family can sing, but not my Da. And you know, I think they do know each other!" The realization hit her like a load of bricks. "I think I met Karma once! He's my Da's da! Which means..." She tried to get her brain wrapped around the idea, "You're my uncle?!"

Shock raced across Dhanny's features. "I'm your UNCLE?! That can't be right. You're older than me!" He rustled his wings, suddenly jittery. "But...I dunno, maybe you are right. Dad does talk about his "other kids" sometimes...Momma gets all weird when that happens, like she wants them to be hers, too."

He peered at Sonata more closely. "You know what? I think your blue is a lot like my blue. A little paler, maybe, but I think it's close enough. But...it's so weird! I can't be an uncle. I'm just a foal!"

Sonata's feathers ruffled at the chill that ran down her spine. This was all so strange. She had never met her Da's da, but this was close as she had ever gotten. She grinned and said, "Yeah, our blues are pretty close. I love blue, just like the sky." She pondered the 'uncle' thing. "I don't think you're my uncle in terms of being a role model and comforter, more just in terms of how we are related."

She hummed a short ditty to herself, then said, "I'm bored, do you want to go do something?" She made a face. There wasn't anything to do. She hated just sitting idle twiddling her feathers.

"Still...it's weird." Dhanny frowned, trying to get a grasp on the concept. He was her uncle, but only by relation. In reality they were more like...friends? He shook his head. It was a complicated notion, and he was only a few months old. He'd figure it out later, when he was a bit bigger.

"OOOOH! Can you fly yet? I can't, but I love to watch others fly!" He jumped up and down in eagerness, his rainbow-tipped mane bouncing with each toss of his small head. "I tried to fly earlier, but I just fell over. My teacher says my wings aren't big enough yet," he said, suddenly contemplative and calm, his bouncing ceased and a quiet reflectiveness in his eyes. "But I don't know about that. They might have grown between this morning and now."

Sonata gave Dhanny's wings a once over. She couldn't really judge how big they should be before he should fly, because his wings were different from hers. The only other soquili she had met besides Dhanny this morning had wings like hers, upright wings that didn't fold in like others did. His wings were still a bit small for his body, but if he had enough muscle he might be able to get off the ground. She said, "I've been flying for about a month now, but thats just cause I'm older than you."

She walked a circle around him, to get a better look at his wings, then shrugged and said, "I'm no expert, but I don't see why you can't try. Just do it like this." She demonstrated, beads of sweat on her forehead from the physical exertion. She pumped twice, hard, and lifted herself off the ground. From there the thermals in the valley where they stood took her up. She said, "Its really hard to do it from a stand still, why don't you try a running start, or even running and jumping off a ledge? Obviously not really high, but high enough. That way if you can't get enough momentum to fly just stick out your wings and you're landing won't be rough."

Dhanny watched with rapt attention as she rose from the ground. "Wow! I wonder if I'll ever be able to do that..." He perked up when she mentioned jumping from a ledge. "I can glide off of one! I just..haven't tried flapping off of one yet."

To demonstrate, he went up to a fairly large rock, but not too high, because he was still afraid of falling and getting hurt. "This looks about right!" he said, jumping from the ledge, extending his wings and gliding down towards the ground. He flapped once, twice, but instead of rising in the wind, he only sunk down towards the ground, foiling his landing and tumbling head over heels onto the soft grass.

"Ow...that wasn't fun," he said with a grin, shaking the grass from his mane. "Maybe I should wait a bit before trying that again," he laughed, "it made me really dizzy!"
