I read The Good Earth earlier this year and adored how Mrs. Buck wrote this wonderful novel. I took my time reading it so that I could savor it and make it last. I did not want it to end. This book is definitely one of my favorites.

I saw a few more of her books on the shelves at my public library during one of my excursions there for more reading material. Hehe, once I finish the Lord Meren mysteries by Lynda Robinson I started over the summer, I'll be tackling more work by her. The sequel to The Good Earth was in that small selection. whee

Yay! One of my very most favorite writers ever. xd
The Good Earth became one of my favorite books before I finished reading it. O-Lan is such a powerful character, and the kind you don't meet often (if ever) in real life. I found the book itself so true to life that it astounded me. True, many of the details of the culture were different, but the characters are so genuine that it's easy for me to forget that they aren't people I knew in some past life. wink

Love it, and love all of Ms. Buck's work that I've read. In fact, I re-read The Big Wave last year when evacuating for a hurricane (I live in Florida). I suggest that book to you all as well. smile

There is so much reading for this one to catch up on! whee I can't believe I never thought to look up more of her books until recently. I could have been reading more wonderful stories over the summer instead of trying to find something good to read that would occupy my attention for longer than a chapter.

I once did a large paper on three of Pearl S. Buck's books. The Good Earth was one of them, and I enjoyed it greatly. Kinfolk is one of the other novels. It has a bit of character study which was wonderful to read. It's centered around a family, but by the last page I felt as though I knew and loved them well enough to be my own siblings.

*sighs* Although I left off not very far into Sons the story isn't doing a thing for me... It's just not the same without O-lan. I'd be perfectly fine with my favorite characters dying in books if there were not sequels to torment me! sweatdrop I don't know if what I wrote makes any sense though.

(Little spoiler warning for The Good Earth...)

I'm really interested in what happens with Pear Blossom and Wang Lung's fool daughter. Every time one of the brothers mentions them, I'm afraid the family is going to cut them off or something. And I've come to like them both so much, especially the daughter. sad
To me, his eldest daughter (who's brain damaged from -for those of you who don't know- probably from being starved as a child) was one of his few redeeming points in The Good Earth. The daughter was one of the few people he seemed to have a sincere love for.

I read the Good Earth and I really enjoyed it. *Possible Spoiler* I was angry when he ignored his wife and stopped treating her well just because he had Pear Blossom (who also angered me. lol). Given the time period, however, I think that this was realistic. I liked the book alot.

Did you mean Pear Blossom (second concubine at the end of the book) or Lotus Blossom (gold-digging first concubine)?

I know what you mean about the time period, though. It's such a good look into China at that time, and from an outside perspective, no less.

Oh ya, Lotus Blossom is what I meant, sorry. She made me angry because then O-Lan was just kicked to the curb, so to speak.

::nods vehemently::

And O-Lan was so much more than Wang Lung even deserved, I think. I see her as the greatest force behind his success. She was so frugal when they had hardly anthing (and even when they grew rich), she was the most rational during the famine, and she was the one who found the jewels that Wang Lung used to buy the land. She kept Wang Lung's pride from letting them starve and never once complained about anything. And the only things she ever asked for were the two pearls. And what's Wang Lung do? Takes them from her and gives them to his whore. evil

I think the reason I love this book so much is because I felt so strongly toward the characters in it. It's not every book that can do that for me.

I liked the ending passage of the novel. Didn't it just give you chills of pleasure to read it? Then again I am the type to like a novel that ends on a cliff-hanger, or at the very least not the stereotypical happily-ever-after. I would mention another novel as a good example, but it has no bearings upon the current author so I shall save it for another thread.

Oh, it has been a long time since I read her books. And I did not realize that The Good Earth had a sequel!

She's good. Very, very good.

I was given the chance to receive a free book for performing a small service. Any book that I wanted. Do you know how hard it is to choose one book alone?

Anyway I had heard of Dragon Seed. Actually I seen that the movie was airing on television, and when the description said that it was based on a Pearl S. Buck novel then I decided I wanted to read the book first. During my browsing I noticed it and seen that the reviews mentioned how it surpassed The Good Earth. You know this piques my interest, right?

So hopefully I will be receiving this title soon. And I still have The Living Reed to get around to once I whittle away more of my TBR list.
