Phase 1: Man‘s Return
The morning starts off just as it always has- the cubs are sent off to their nannies, the warriors to their chief to train, and the huntresses have set out to hunt for the pride‘s dinner. A routine hunt will turn out to be something much more than the hunting party has bargained for…

Opening:

Morning began once more with a powerful roar. Rotem, as his father before him and his grandfather before him, was always the first to wake. It was his responsibility to rouse the pride, oversee the gathering of the warriors to their assigned duties and drills. Adara would see that the cubs were efficiently gathered up out of their slumber and sent off to their respected nannies while their mothers joined up with the day’s hunting or scouting parties. It was a routine that had kept the pride safe for generations, a routine that every member of the pride could set the pace of their life to, a routine that would continue long after they had all passed on.

~

This area was legendary! Historians, scholars, and adventurers alike would give an arm and a leg to explore such a place. It had nearly cost them that. It was miserably hot, resources were used sparingly, and for those that were unfamiliar with the rough gait of the camels upon which they rode- it was murder on their bodies. Nights were spent huddled up around the fire, jumping at every cricket chirp and snapping twig in the distance while the days were spent babbling if only to keep their wits about them, sweating out whatever water they had been privileged to, and complaining about the damnable fleabags upon which they rode.

The party consisted of five guides, all having at least a year’s experience in the field. A pair of brothers had grown up just north of the site led the party while the others, more often than not, spent their nights on lookout. The English explorers, ten in total, had been hired as ‘body guards’ against the ‘wild beasts’. Each of them shared their own stories of the hunt around the campfire. One boasted three expeditions into Asia to claim a pile of tiger-pelts for himself. Another had brought down an Elephant not too long ago and had made a small fortune off the ivory tusks that he’d brought home with him. The others had similar stories, each of them sought to add another tale and, perhaps, a few trophies to accompany it by the end of the expedition. Twelve historians had funded the trip. Biblical scholars seeking the treasures of their faith, map-makers seeking to bring light to the wild lands, and archeologists seeking more clues into the past. Each of them had become the butt of at least one joke by their adventurer ‘protectors’. The small company had met and planned the trip from the safety of an English library, each of them having only ever seen the ‘wild beasts’ through bars or standing, stuffed, on tabletops and walls. Once or twice, the historians had fought off insects that had been slipped into their shoes or packs by their ‘trusted’ companions.

Ahava rolled in her den hearing the roar from Rotem meant to rouse the pride. It was something she had grown up, something she was use to. She grinned slightly sitting up and preceding with her morning bath, cleaning her face and running her tongue over the spots that needed it. The bath was much quicker than her evening bath, but she knew she needed to start her day and that she would be out hunting soon.

Ahava sighed lightly remember the conversation she had with her brother and tried to put it out of head. She rose quickly and headed out of her den, stretching in the morning light and breathing in the fresh air. She shook out her fur and headed out to meet the others.

Stretching her way out of her den, Ushara, formerly Huan'ju, greeting the dawn with a yawn. She glanced back into the den, where she knew her cub slept. A smile graced her maw, spotting Tziporah not too far away, her and her own family waking. If her sleeping daughter woke before her return, she knew, Tziporah would be there to watch her.

Stepping away from her den, Ushara looked about, ears up. Taking in a deep breath, she closed her eyes, enjoying a light breeze. This morning was like every other before it... Beautiful. Taking in another breath, she let out a call, rallying for the other huntresses to start their morning hunt.

Padding lightly out of her den, Mut'salama breathed in the morning air. It was wonderful, up here in the north, away from the crowding of the Pridelands. It was just a bit cooler here, but she didn't mind in the least. For the morning hunt, her trinkets had all be left in the den, waiting for her return. She preferred it this way, so that her bangles didn't get caught on a bush, nor did her necklace, and her earrings didn't give off a reflection. Answering the call from Ushara, she headed for the usual meeting spot of the huntresses.

Aveil had wandered a long time for home, and spying the Huntresses for the morning hunt warmed her heart, the lioness beaming as she padded towards them, giving a loud roar of greeting, padding towards them.

Yes, today felt good.

At the roar Asenath shot up with her ears raised. This was it! Today would be her first real hunt without her father hovering over her from a ledge somewhere. She bounded out to greet the other lionesses, buffing a hello toward them. The only one she really recognized was her aunt.

"Aunt Ahava!" She called as she made her way toward the older lioness. She let out a slight grin. "Are you ready to hunt?" She was going to do her best this morning. With her Aunt's help she'd surely do great on the hunt. Maybe they'd get a zebra or maybe even a waterbuck. Whatever it was she'd be sure to hold her own and no slow everyone down.

"Buggar... we any closer, doc?" A large man, by the name of Andrew, groaned. It had been the third time that day he'd announced his impatience with the trip through the desert. The landscape was certainly a trial in and of itself. There hadn't been a patch of vegetation for miles. The only wildlife to be seen for the last two days had been small reptiles, unfit to eat, and the vultures overhead.

William, one of the historians, glanced up from his map. It was a welcome distraction from the sway and bounce of the bloody beast under him. "Soon enough." He groaned, "We did warn you that it would be a difficult hike."

"I think I see something." Trevor, another one of the hunters, squinted his already narrowed eyes. The small party glanced up from their bickering, groaning, and charts. Sure enough, just on the horizonline glittered a large body of water.

"Good heavens!" William rolled up his previous map and unrolled another to replace it. "That's it! That's the Dead Sea! We must not be far"

"You expect to find Sodom out here? We've not seen so much as a boulder forged by human hands since we left the last village."

"Any ruin would be a step in the right direction."

"Whatever." Andrew grunted, "Dead Sea's not drinkable, I don't know why we're getting excited... it's called 'dead' for a reason."

"No...but there should be a fresh spring nearby." William held up his map, rough as it was. Much of it was unexplored. "According to scriptures and old rumors- there's a small oasis out here."

"Right." Andrew drove his heels into the camel's side, earning a grunt from the large beast, "Then we'll shoot for that."

"Good morning Asenath," called Ahava as her niece bounded over. Ahava smiled at her excitement. "I am always ready for a hunt. And I see you are as well. Keep that energy for the hunt Ase. I am sure you will be a great addition."

Ahava watched as the others gathered together smiling at the group, "Good morning everyone." She gave them a moment to settle in for they needed to make sure the hunting plan was together before they went out. She wondered if it was okay for her to be the one to start off, but pushed the thought aside as they had no head huntress, nor was the queen in attendance and they were all in the hunt together.

"Before we leave we will need to decide on where we will hunt. I believe our scouts have reported the herds have moved a short distance south from the oasis. Also everyone will need a position for the hunt."

Don't actually know who is leading but Ahava does aim to be head huntress so thats why she is starting lol

Looking up at the sky, Ushara smelled the air. "But that report was yesterday, wasn't it? They might have moved... Not far, but they might have." She looked at Asenath, head tilting. "Perhaps we could check by the spring. This early in the morning, they might be getting their fill of water before browsing for the day."

The hair along Mut's back rose slightly, though she knew not why. The peach-brown lioness glanced at the others, then looked towards the sea. "Should we hunt today...? Something feels off today..." What was it, exactly, that felt off? She couldn't place it, but something was going to happen. Something big.

Aveil grunted.

"North, south, springs, no springs-- It's all the same to me."

She lifted a paw, grooming it cooly. "As long as there's a hunt to do."

Asenath nodded firmly. She couldn't wait to show off to Jaron how much she learned. She couldn't help trying to prove she was better at hunting then he was. "Of course Aunt Ahava!" She chirped then paced in impatience. She couldn't wait to try.

"They're probably at the oasis. We...." She hesitated not sure if it was her place before continuing. "We should probably get as close as we can and check."

She gazed toward the other lionesses on the hunt. "R-right...The spring." She amended. Mut made her flinch slightly. Off? What did she mean by off? "It ...doesn't look like rain..." She muttered looking upward.

The further the hunting party went from their territory, the more still and silent the landscape would seem. The approach of the two-legged creatures had long sent the prey beasts into flight. Hares ducked into their holes and gazelle bounded off. The only life to be seen for miles were a pair of vultures, hunched into their feathers sitting high on the branches of a withered tree.

Andrew had taken the head of the group. Ignoring the whining protests of a handful of his traveling companions, he kicked his camel onward. He'd had enough of this barren landscape. Enough of having no spot of shade to duck into, and no relief from the rough, rolling lope of his camel.

It didn't take long for him to leave the others in his dust. A handful of loping specks came into his scope. The camel grunted and loped to a stop as his rider tugged at his reigns.

The man leaned forward and dropped a hand to the pistol at his side. Lions... a small party of them. "Hm..."

His lips curled into a smirk. Where there were beasts, there were the means to survive. Water, shade, and game.

Ahava nodded to Mut, something did seem a bit off. She heard her niece's words before she seemed to start chattering a bit. What caught Ahava was a foreign grunt that she was certain she had not heard before. It was then she really noticed how quiet it was all around them

She turned and ducked down looking around in the grasses. "Get down," she whispered her voice shaking lightly.

She spotted them in the distance, "What's that?" Ahava voice rang with confusion. "Have any of you ever seen anything like that?"

She remembered her chat with her brother, he'd said man was near and desperately wanted to back up and head to safety.

When she ducked down, Ushara was well-aware that her white coat stood out. She ignored this fact, though, doing as told. As lime-green eyes scanned the horizon, she soon spotted something... Odd... "What kind of animal is THAT...?"

Mut trembled, watching the thing on the horizon. A bad feeling in the pit of her stomach had her beginning to back away. "That's not normal... It's too quiet... We should go somewhere else to hunt..." Not normally one to fear anything, Mut couldn't explain just WHY she wanted to be anywhere but here. Whatever that thing was, it did NOT bode well for the pride.

Aveil regarded the thing on the thing calmly, sizing the animal up. Whatever it was, it was causing the quiet. Her claws dug into the Earth irritably.

"Maybe if we get rid of it, the prey will return. There's only one. I bet I can take it. Besides, what if it gets closer to home?"

Really, Aveil rarely backed down from much. The lioness carefully began to stalk, face intense, watching for sudden movements. Let the others fuss and worry like nits! This needed dealing with!

Asenath being the youngest member of the group watched the others get down and stared up at it. It was another creature. So it was friendly, right? She frowned at her aunt then took a few careful steps forward, plagued by curiosity. "Maybe we should talk to it? Its so strange... maybe its lost?"

She crept toward it, ears pressed forward. Her body was telling her to be ready to run but if it was friendly then what was the point? She called to it. A short grunting roar in attempt to get answers.
