Yumielda had never run this far before, never let her paws carry her as far they could until she could feel her muscles burn from the strain. She hardly felt the pain as her dark little body streaked along the rolling plains, the savanna lit as if with sunlight in the brilliance of a full moon and a dark sky riddled with sparkling stars. Yet the moment she spent gazing up at such a lovely sight left her open to an unexpected dip in her path that sent her tumbling head over heels until she landed on her back.

"Mmgh . . . owww." A whimper left her as she tried to turn over to stand up again, but a sharp pain up her front paw quickly convinced her otherwise. She yelped as the sprain brought tears to her purple eyes, and before she knew it, the very young female had curled into herself, feeling very alone and frightened.

User Image Aileena jerked her head up as a swoosh of air signaled that something had landed directly in front of her nose. She shoved herself up to her feet and was about to back away when she heard the moan of a cub. Blinking her currently useless eyes at the darkness in front of her, she let out a small sigh of relief, but the whimper signaled to her mind that something was still wrong, even if she wasn't in immediate danger herself. As there was no more sound of movement in front of her, Aileena squinted her eyes, already knowing that it was useless. Though her blue eyes could manage just fine when the sun was up, for some reason she had been born without any ability to see in the dark, unlike the rest of the Saighneian population. Since she knew that she had no hope of visually inspecting the cub in front of her, the female cleared her throat and spoke, "Uh, h-hi. A-are you all right?"

Don't ask her why a cub was making her nervous.... Most likely it was because anytime she couldn't see the objects around her, it made her nervous. Not being able the see the cat she was speaking to was a bit disconcerting, though her sharp ears did continuously swivel around to monitor her surroundings, including the small creature in front of her. She dipped her head down to the cub's level and sniffed. She didn't smell any blood, so hopefully the little thing wasn't hurt too badly, "My name is Aileena.... Can I help you?"

As she heard a voice the pup stiffened with fear, breath catching in her throat. There was someone there? Judging from the tone, it was a female, but she was a stranger too! 'Not supposed to talk to strangers. Not supposed to talk to strangers.' Yumielda thought to herself, remaining silent and trying to get up again, but she quickly crumpled under her own weight. "It h-hurts! My paw hurts!" She whined aloud, her desperation for help overriding her fear of a stranger as she lay sprawled on the grass.

The silence that answered Aileena's offer of assistance seemed strange to the blue female. She could smell the cub in front of her, but if she didn't say anything, then there wasn't much Ailee could do. Sighing a bit, she settled back, expecting the cub to skitter off and out of her range of detection, but then words answered her. Uh-oh, injuries to paws were never good. With the exclamation aiding her in pinpointing the cub's location, Aileena closed the distance between them and used her snout to touch what she hoped was the cub's head. "I don't smell any blood, so it shouldn't be too bad.... But don't move it, that might make it worse...." The adult was fairly distressed, since she had no ability to see what was wrong with the cub's paw until morning, so the most she could do was give the cub company and offer a bit of protection until the sun rose. She couldn't even defend them all that well, since she couldn't see if an attacker approached, but there weren't many hostile Saighneian in this area, so hopefully they would be all right.

As the cub continued to whine, Aileena worried to herself over the pain. There was nothing she could do, though, since even if she knew of herbs that would ease the pain, she couldn't find them at night. Especially since most herbs were in the dark forest, and there was no way she was going in there at this time. "Maybe if you tell me your name and stop moving, it'll distract you from the pain...." It was her best attempt at being friendly, and she really had never had much of a maternal instinct to speak of, so she really didn't know what she was doing.

"Y-Yes, ma'am." The pup sniffled, drawing her sprained paw beneath her protectively as she looked up at the figure in the moonlight. She had better sight than the adult, it seemed, as Aileena's stare was not directly toward her, though the comforting touch the adult gave helped the pup's fear abate. If this Saighneian had wanted to make a prey out of her, she would have done it by now, she supposed. "My name is Yoo-mee-ell-dah." Yumielda spoke her name syllable by syllable, having found it hard to pronounce herself. "B-but you can call me Yumi if you cannot s-say it."

Ailee had to chuckle as she cub called her ma'am. She had never thought of herself as that old, but she realized that she was now a full grown adult and it was difficult for cubs to tell how old adults really were. "You don't need to call me ma'am, I'm not that old, just call me Ailee." She winked in the direction she suspected the cub was, though she couldn't know where her eyes were, and so it was more just in the general area of where she suspected the cub's head was. With her sensitive ears, it was easy enough to pinpoint where a voice was emanating from, but past that she had no way of fine tuning her interpretation of the face. "That's a very pretty name Yumi, though you're right, it is a bit hard to pronounce." She smiled softly, feeling like a cub again with the youth at her side.

Realizing that it was unlikely she was going to sleep much more this night, the blue female thought to herself on how to pass the time. Well, talking was really the only thing that she could think of that she could do with her limited vision, so she continued, "What did you do to your paw little Yumi?"

When the adult complimented her name, the little one positively purred with delight, instantly warming up to this kind stranger. "Very well, Ailee. Thank you." The gentle tone had almost brought her to forget her ailment before it was mentioned again, and the pup's ears drooped as she rested her head lightly on her paws. "I was running and I tripped over s-something and fell. Now it hurts when I try to walk or move it." As if to prove her point, Yumielda tried to push herself back up with the forepaw and yelped as a spike of pain shot up the limb, instantly regretting it and plopping back down on the grass. "Y-you do not think it is broken, do you, Ailee?" At the very thought she felt tears returning to her eyes.

Aileena had to smile as she heard the cub purring. Good, that was a good place for her to be. Keeping her mind off of the pain was the best way to get through this night. Looking to the east hopefully, the blue Saigh searched for any light that would signal the coming of dawn, but to no avail; she saw nothing but foggy blackness. When the cub answered her question, her blind eyes turned back to the cub's voice, nodding a bit as she listened to the explanation. "Uh-huh. Well...." The yip of pain that the cub released and the soft whooshing of a small body hitting the grass again keyed Ailee into the fact that the cub had just tried to stand again. Clucking a bit, the blue adult shook her head, "Then stop doing that!" Her tone was a bit sharp, but she really did want to impress onto the cub that it would be much better if she rested the painful joint. Sighing a bit once again, Ailee's mouth twisted into a bit of a grimace, and her brow furrowed in thought, "No, I don't think it's broken.... I didn't hear a pop when you fell, and I have very good hearing. I think you just hurt it a little bit and if you rest it, it will stop hurting." Thinking another moment of how to comfort the cub, the female continued, "And I can't help a lot until the sun comes up, but then I'll find some herbs that will help, I promise. But until then you have to promise to just rest and try to sleep...."

Looking again in the direction she knew was east, Ailee searched again for any indication of growing light, but nothing came to her clouded eyes. Another sigh escaped her lips as she silently willed the dawn to come faster. The cubs pain was grating to her maternal instincts, but her logical mind was firm and correct that she could do nothing until the sun rose.

At the adult's stern order, Yumi let herself lie still on the grass with ears pressed to her head, at first quite cowed by the command. However, she grew more relaxed at the femme's promise to help her in the morning. After all that running the pup was starting to grow very tired, glad at least it was a reasonably warm summer night. Yet, she - like most frightened children - longed for someone to nuzzle her and tell her it would be okay. Keeping her paw close beneath her, she limped closer to Aileena and nestled near the female's warm flank like she would her father when it was time to sleep, trembling slightly with nervousness.

"Y-Yes, Ailee . . . I'll be good." She mewled weakly, finding a comfort in the physical contact that no words could have given her. The pup was rather small with fine fur that was soft an silky to the touch, and her eyes closed as she tried her best to sleep with Aileena at her side.

Aileena was glad when she didn't hear any more rustling from Yumi's direction after her command to be still. At least the cub was willing to listen to orders that were for her own good, it would make Ailee's life much easier come morning hopefully. However, that moment of healthful stillness was short lived, and at first the blue female became ready to scold again, until she realized that Yumi wasn't crying out in pain, so she must have been avoiding moving her leg, and that she was simply closing the gap between the two females' bodies. There was nothing wrong with that in Aileena's opinion, especially since it made it much easier to keep track of the little bundle of fluff. Scent and sound could only go so far in pinpointing the cub's location, and it could do nothing to understand the cub's bodily expressions, so this was much preferred.

The obedient mewl from the cub was enough to call out the adult's maternal instincts in full, and as soon as the small cub was settled, Ailee maneuvered her pale blue body around the little ball protectively. The night adventure had been enough to wake the female up when it was important, but now that things were smoothing out, exhaustion was creeping into her mind once more. Settling her head on her front paws, the adult muttered, "I know you will little Yumi, I know you will...."
