Name: Merik
Age: 18
Sex: M
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft: Beastcraft
Rank: Candidate
Physical Description:
Merik's got curly, blondish-brown hair, with much darker brown eyes. He's built somewhat slightly, standing at 5'11, and doesn't appear nearly as strong as he is. His arms, legs and head are all burned deep brown, but he's strikingly whiter under his clothes, a definition "farmer-tan." He has a large nose and, despite his skin, is still almost always sunburned on his forehead and cheeks. There's a small, deep scar halfway up his left calf, from an unfortunate run-in with a cart when he was a child, but it's not very prominent and doesn't affect him much beyond the way of some discomfort on long runs. He's not particularly muscled, with more the litheness of a runner than the muscles of the Beastcraftsman he was raised as. Aside from everything about him being nearly the same color, Merik is a very average-looking fellow without a particularly prominent trait.
Personality:
Merik is a very plain, open, down-to-earth kind of guy. He's not the sharpest tack in the box, even pretty dull at times, but he's got a big heart and he really does mean well. He's not a big dreamer, thinking much more on a day-to-day basis of life, or even moment-to-moment. Being so used to working with beasts (albeit predictable ones), he has a quick reaction time and tends to not put a lot of thought into his responses- to beasts or people. He's blissfully upbeat, with a constant smile and a very strong "if I grin at it long enough, it'll get better" attitude. He's very hard to get down, but he's also hard to motivate, being just an emotionally rock-solid person.
Merik's got a pretty cheesy sense of humor as well, and enjoys his jokes much, it seems, than anyone else. He got into the habit of chatting to his father's herdbeasts when he was alone, and as a result, talks quite a bit to people, though most of it is just senseless babble that he'll interrupt and stomp over others' words to get out- and he can't really help how regularly it seems to get him on people's nerves.
Though it's rare he's actually motivated towards a task, he faces everything requested of him with the same steady resolve he regards everything. If asked to do something within his power, the thought would likely never even cross Merik's mind to not do it. He would never be referred to as the serious type, but he does take everything quite seriously. He'll work 'til he drops without complaint; a task charged unto this boy is as good as done.
He'd never take on a task of his own free will, but when others want it of him, Merik can rise to challenge upon challenge. He doesn't have any affinity for leadership whatsoever, but he can take orders like the best of canines.
He's wonderfully true (and, honestly, not mean or cunning enough to be otherwise), though he doesn't have a whole lot of passion in him. He's got about the demeanor of the old bovines he was raised around; an ignorant, happy boulder.
History:
Merik's father is a Journeyman of general Beastcraft at Ista Hold, and his mother an Apprentice Beasthealer. His parents split up not long after he was born, although there's no animosity between the two and he's spent time with both. Merik spent the majority of his childhood, though, with his father, who's been posted at Ista for almost 20 years now. Merik's been working the craft under his father his entire life, but only officially became an Apprentice at 16 Turns. With quite the high regard of Dragons, his father wanted to make sure there was no way a Journeymanship could impede on his eligibility to be Searched.
Merik's life, otherwise, has been uneventful. He was plucked up during the last Search, when a Rider came combing through Ista's Apprentices. As a young child, his father often took him near the Weyr to watch Wings of Weyrlings flying their drills. Little things like this making up all the highlights of his memory, Dragons have consistently been the wonder of Merik's life. His Search was by far the most exciting thing he's ever experienced.
Pets: None
Other/Talents:
Merik's not a weaver by any means, but he's got long fingers and some really brilliant hands. He's a big fan of braids and knots, and can make most everything from harnesses to sculptures with enough leather or string. Obviously, he's not shabby as a Beastcraftsman either.
Will this character be a candidate? Yes
