When sunset had spread itself across the savanna, Durion made his move.
He crept out of his hiding spot, made a slow, grueling climb over a pile of rocks, and slipped into a thick group of trees. The trees reminded him of the jungle; a place he did not want to be in, for the regretful memories it brought about. But he needed shelter. The only reason he chose to move was because it was night time, making his travels safer because of the darkness.
Earlier that day, he had run into an insane cheetah. But not any insane cheetah--it was the insane cheetah. He had met and fought with it before. Luckily for him, this time, he was smarter; and perhaps the cheetah was a little crazier, and he had escaped with fewer, less-severe injuries.
But he still hurt like HELL.
Face wincing as a bleeding paw stepped on a sharp twig, the lion continued through the trees, trying to find some place to settle down and rest for the night. Predators didn't hunt in the trees...He'd be alright in there. It's not like anyone else would be in those trees that evening...
Right?

It was unfortunate that Durion was wrong, more so that he was absolutely wrong. Waiting on the tree branch sat a lioness, her eyes glittering with curiosity at the predicament that had formed in her mind a short while ago. Her slumber had been disturbed that very day; she was unsure what had caused her to wake so suddenly, though she knew by the scent of blood, someone was injured.
So she shock herself awake and had proceeded to gather a group of herbs for the injured traveler. It was rare to get a visitor in this place; she would greet them with open paws.
Veredhiel perked up as her ears caught hold of a noise in the distance. Excitement infused. Something told her that this was the traveler she was expecting.
And so it was.
A black lion, blue wings adorning his wings. He had blue eyes that dazzled and captured her. He was a handsome one, she would admit.
"Hello there," she called. "are you in need of assistance?"
Her eyes dwindled down to eye his paw, which was caked with blood. She let her gaze examine his pelt, scratches here in there, though not bad.

The sight of the baby-blue lioness was completely unexpected, and Durion started. For a moment, he imagined it was that leopardess he knew...But no, it wasn't her. Hah.
Thank gods...
Shedding his surprise, the injured lion gave a hesitant smile.
"Oh, no." he said. Then blinked. "Well, kind of..." he offered, leaving the weight off of his split-open paw. "If you're offering. I mean, I don't...Wanna trouble you." he fumbled, eyes flitting across the female's face.
She was kind of...Pretty.

Veredhial let a friendly smile adorn her features as she nodded towards him. She picked up the herbs that were set delicately next to her and proceeded to walk towards him. Getting into her den would be later. His paw needed immediate attention now.
Slowly, she pawed at his side, feeling for any possible breakages. She was skilled at finding any broken bones in the body.
Silently, she thanked herself. He didn't have any broken bones.
"Could 'chu lay down?" The herbs muffled her speech slightly. She started chewing on the herbs thoughtfully. "Yur paw needs to be wapped up, now."
Obviously she wasn't bothered by how she was ordering him around. He could fight with her, or even run away if he could, but she would still follow him. His paw really did need some attention, if he wished for it not to get infected.

Durion blinked, heart stirring in his chest at the sight of the female's kind smile. She was pretty straight-forward about his injuries for a girl...Then again, he'd met such healing females before. He'd never met a healer-type lioness, though. And if he did, certainly not one so pretty...
Maybe fights were worth it after all...?
Smirking at the muffled demands the lioness was giving, Durion wordlessly obeyed, favoring his split paw as he folded his limbs and lied down. He let a heavy sigh out of his lungs as he rolled onto his side.
'Let the healing begin,' Durion thought bemusedly.
"So..." Durion started, feeling awkward just lying there in silence. "Do you always offer to help random, bleeding strangers?" he asked half-jokingly.

Veredhiel really didn't care if the one she healed was an arrogant a*****e or a total sweetheart. It was a nature instinct for her to help someone even if they didn't want help. She was stubborn when it came to helping many despite many pushing her away despite her kind offer.
If he had noticed the multiple scars that hid beneath her pelt he would realize she had been abused many times in the past. The scars were the memories she tried hard to forget.
She looked at him and spit out the herbs, taking them in one paw and carefully spreading them across his paw. These would help fight the infection off, also dulling the pain. They were her personal painkillers.
Then she managed to get a small leaf, easy enough, and she wrapped it around his paw.
"Actually," she grinned at him. "I do. It is a natural instinct to help many in need, for me, that is."
Patting the leaf gently, "That will, I'm sure your aware, keep the herbs on your paw from falling off. I would take it easy the next few days. Your paw was close to becoming quite infected, and if I wasn't here it might have been too infected to save."

It had been a long time since Durion felt a maternal presence in his life. Not since his mother--...
...Well, that was in the past now...
At first, lying there, the lion only wanted to get healed up and rest as quickly as possible. But the more he watched the lioness work, and the more he listened to the sound of her soft voice, the more he...wanted to stay there...
Durion breathed in the lioness's scent, taking in information, while feeling strangely relaxed at the same time. But he stopped quickly, trying not to seem like he was obviously interested in her.
"Natural instinct, huh?" Durion echoed, smirking weakly. He winced at the pressure on his paw, but it subsided quickly as the herbal painkiller took affect.
"Thanks, uh..." he started. Blue eyes flicked up to meet those of the lioness's. He held the stare. "What's your name?" he asked quietly.

Veredhiel quietly watched him as he relaxed under the feel of the herbs. It was good that they were doing good for him and she was happy that she got to him in time. Who knows what would have happened to him if he lost his paw. She shook away from the thoughts, not wanting to dwell there.
Better to think positive rather than negative, after all.
"Yes," she said, eying him with a twinkle in her eye. "you could say it's a maternal instinct. I feel that everyone, mean or kind, should be helped if their in need. No one is truly bad, after all, despite the sins they might have committed."
She was honestly curious to learn of what his name was. He was an interesting lion. "I am Veredhiel." she murmured.
"I honestly have been expecting you," she admitted, looking away. "the smell of blood was in the air around a day ago, so I suspected someone was injured. You were the one." a nod, she flicked her tail.

Durion watched her interestedly, his expression curious, but somehow hard.
She looked after all types, not believing anyone could truly be bad...Not even if they've killed someone? Not even if they'd stolen, cheated, lied, and had their way with women? What kind of lioness was she?
Durion watched Veredhiel, expression softening.
"My name's Durion," the male slurred, smirking tiredly. His muscles were aching from the strain of his fight, but the soothing herbs on his paw were helping to calm his hot blood a great deal.
"Sorry that you smelled my blood." he offered bluntly, grinning. Then he rolled onto his stomach, shaking dead leaves out of his mane. Then he looked back to the lioness. "I guess I was lucky you were hangin' around then, Veredhiel." he said. "If I did know any better..." he started quietly, eyes wavering over her face. "I'd say you were a goddess in disguise."

The look Durion gave her made Veredhiel's stomach flutter. She didn't know a time where she felt like this in the life she currently lived. The only time she reacted like this was when...-
...No. She refused to believe those were the same feelings that she got from that person. How stupid could she be? She dumped all her feelings when that person left her. Experiencing them again was too painful for her. She couldn't.
A hurt look flashed across her face and she masked it with curiosity. He probably could read her emotions if she let him. She was a complex lioness, no one except family knew her secrets.
This stranger couldn't learn them.
"Nice to meet you, Durion," she said. "I will say, your name is quite unique." Very unique. Like no other.
The emotions she felt now destroyed her almost immediately. She felt flustered, embarrassed. What else? She didn't know. She didn't want to know! Dammit, what was he doing to her?
Love.
She was falling...
Hard.
"And you could be a god yourself, Durion," she chuckled. "though I'm sure I could be right."

Something inside Durion cringed, pulling back from the lioness's words. He didn't want to hear that he could be a god. He didn't want to hear that. He'd been told often in the past that he could be one in disguise, or that he could be the relative of one because of his wing markings. It made him question who his father was. Maybe his father had been one? Ugh, he didn't want to think about that. He didn't want to think about his father. He wanted those thoughts to go away immediately.
But this lioness...She could make those thoughts go away.
She could be like the herb she tied around his paw.
...He wanted her.
Shifting back to normal, the male smiled and sat up, not putting any weight on his hurt paw as the lioness had instructed.
She looked soft in the moonlit trees, blue eyes almost glowing. Her maternal smile was almost pained, and Durion felt himself getting pulled in. It wasn't often that he became so...Infatuated with someone just because. Usually, he had a reason; a good one. Not just...Because...She...
Durion swallowed, continuing to stare despite himself.
"You flatter me." he said quietly. And he meant it. He didn't deserve to be called a god. Gods were what people prayed to for help. But he couldn't help anyone.
He only did bad things...

Distantly she wondered what she was getting herself into. What was the price for loving another? Veredhiel had let go so long ago of the one she cared for, of the ones she cared for. She left them all to raise the love of her life. During those times she considered herself the happiest lioness alive. She thought she was raising him right, but things weren't right.
Things were never right for her and she always learned that they were. If someone was giving her a second chance, a chance to redeem herself, she was pondering if taking that chance was the right choice. Was it?
Why did she feel these emotions only after spending a few minutes with this stranger? She did not know his history, his life. He was a roaming stranger who would depart after a while. She would never see him again.
He was like the others she healed. Right?
Right?
"I'm sorry if I do," she whispered. "I don't mean to, and I hardly do anymore. You are the first I have met that has caught my attention this much."
He was the first. Since that person.

Why this lioness? Why her and not someone else?
Durion had had his share of flings, that was sure...That was real sure...But he'd always chosen...Well...Sexy lioness; feisty ones, or ones that were blatantly interested in him. Right now, in those trees, on that night, staring into the bright blue eyes of that soft-colored lioness, Durion knew she wasn't like all those other females. She was soft on the inside. She was pretty. She was kind. And she didn't judge people. She was good.
But he wasn't.
Durion was a bad apple, who'd done bad things and had a lot of sins to carry on his cross. Despite all the times he ever repented, he still did bad things. He was going to try and do another bad thing right now...Something potentially hurtful to someone good inside. Maybe he was a god? The god of sins...
His ears turned to the sides, watching the changing expressions the lioness was giving as she spoke.
"...Same here." he said. Silently, he got to his feet, never taking his eyes off the lioness. He stepped closer, his nose inches from her face. He tried breaking her down in his head; tried to deduce what she was all about; what her scars were and what made her who she was. But he found that the more he looked, the more it didn't matter.
"It's late...Ain't you tired?" he breathed.
It was funny...
His wounds had stopped hurting.

Fate was what brought them together for this one night. Veredhiel considered fate the main reason she came across this stranger, a lion who she knew was coming while he never knew that the lioness awaited his arrival. A laughter emanated in her mind; she was often thought of as a seer due to her ability to tell when someone was coming, even if it was because of her great sense of smell and hearing.
They were two things she relied on the most. Without smell or hearing she doubted that she would have none he was coming until it was too late; he could have passed this way and died of an infected paw. Even her eye sight didn't matter at all.
She didn't judge people. No one was innocent, no one was perfect. No one was evil, no one was murderous. More of a middle. Sure, she had her share of sins, and she was positive he had his share.
And she wasn't fully aware of how close he was until his face was inches away from her's. Muscles tensed, she froze where she stood as her gaze rested on his blue eyes. They were so close. Too close. An alarm went off in her head... and she chose to ignore it.
"I suppose I am..." she murmured.
Everything went numb in her paws.
The pounding in her chest became a deafening drum in her mind.
And she ignored it all.

Durion's own heart beat was growing more and more rapid as he was filled with a sense of love and want towards the lioness, but he could hear her heart beat above his own.
His expression was strangely soft, but somehow pained; hurt, maybe, thinking about how he knew he would leave the lioness in the end, but maybe also because he felt she knew he would, too.
The world was a strange place, twisting lives together and ripping them apart. When you thought you had control over something, that control was pulled away and you realized how alone and pathetic you were. It was times like those that Durion held onto; times where he truly connected with someone, and felt safe. He felt loved, and wanted to love back. For whatever reason, in those few moments, it had shifted from pure attraction to just...Wanting to be. Just to exist with that other person for as long as possible, before life snatched you away and your ties were once again ripped.
"I'm...A little tired, too." Durion said quietly, his face still close to the lioness's. "But I don't have..." He hesitated, wondering what would happen if he didn't finish the sentence. But he had to. He needed that girl. "...A place to go."
A breeze rustled the trees, flowing through Durion's mane and brushing the female's hair.
"Do you?"
