So, I'm going to a 2 year college to get my associates degree. My original profession was to do something with art, but I changed my mind because I love animals with a passion so I decided to go to school to be a Vet Tech. Well, I'm struggling because I have a connective tissue disorder that's basically ruining my life. It's been getting in the way of everything I've always wanted to do. The symptoms of this disorder is being very tall, thin, having abnormally long limbs, curled toes, curled fingers, flat feet, and scoliosis. My fingers on my left hand are completely curled so it's hard to scruff a cat with a dominant hand that's got curled fingers. The right hand's fingers aren't as bad, but they're curling more now. It fails cause I can't friggin' straighten them out at all. I can draw blood just fine, but restraining is EVIL! I'm thinking about just giving up and switching majors. I don't even want to work at clinic or anything. I wanted to work in a Histology lab. I'm retaking Small Animal Medicine since I failed it in May. Well, what do you guys think? It's really important.

my friend has rheumatoid arthritis (at a very young age) and his arms and hands and fingers are badly curled up too.
he decided he would (1) not give in, but (2) he would try to be smart about it.
so he took math and is now a well paid actuary.
so i say, change majors and god bless.

Yea, I'll just change my major. I don't think the department chairman of the Vet Tech program will just say, "Well, if you can't restrain, you don't have to." I'll speak to my mother about it more. I'll try to find a career choice she's happy with. Thank you ^^

Do you have to take that course to work in a histology lab? Couldn't you do a course in biomedicine or microbiology, or even general science? I'm pretty sure there's a whole bunch of different courses that can lead to lab work - my Mum did a food technologist degree and worked in a lab for a couple of years for a cheese company... they need all the bacteria checked out on the cheese or something, I don't know exactly. xd Or does the curled fingers affect your ability to do lab work? sad
There's probably also a lot of different jobs out there that mean working with animals, or even volunteering with them if you really want them to be a part of your life (aside from having pets xd ) but without doing vet stuff.
G'luck figuring it out. heart

No ma'am. I can do stuff with my hands and everything. I won't have issues doing lab work at all. All I'll be doing in a Histology lab is testing blood samples, urine samples, feces samples, and tissue samples. One month, we took Anatomy and Physiology and that didn't require restraining or drawing blood from any animals since we were basically performing necropsies. (an autopsy, but with animals) I was way more into that because I enjoyed using the scalpel and just messing around with organs and whatnot. Lol, yes I'm creepy, I know. XD My hands won't get in the way of lab work. I won't have to grip on anything so tightly like I do with restraining animals. See, my grip isn't so great anyway. Holding on to a syringe is a piece of cake so I'm great at that, it's just trying to hold down something that's 13lbs and up. Ah, and with Microbiology, I'll be taking that in my future classes. I'm not quite sure what classes are required for Histology other than Microbiology, Parasitology, and Lab procedures. I'll just have to talk to our department chairman about that. She even said, "If you can't hold a syringe properly or can't restrain properly, you'd better switch professions." So, that's what I wanna do. See, I'm like a weird outcast. Mom wanted me to be a Medical Assistant if this profession didn't work out. I don't like talking to people in real life. Lol, so why not just be cooped up in a lab all day? Psh, I'll be making WAY more than the Vet Techs anyway. A Veterinary Assistant wouldn't be all that bad either, but they don't get paid much and I don't need a degree to do it. All I'll do is change the litter, clean the dog feces, feed them, give them water, and take the dogs out for walks. See, my goal is to basically get a good job so I can support my mom and get us out of this darned city. The city is a scary place, man! XD Like I said, I'll talk to my chairman tomorrow. We're going out to the clinic tomorrow to work with the animals. Oh, joy. *Sarcasm*
EDIT: I just emailed her instead. I'll see what she says. Hopefully something good, lol.
