User ImageNAME : Dr. Arlette Amelia Cloverlily V
GENDER : Female
AGE : 33-35
OCCUPATION : A doctor. She fixes things. (Though what exactly, she isn’t quite keen on disclosing.) “People, animals, mechanics! Whatever ya want really!” is how she would put it.
RACE : Human
LIKES : – Secrets, especially the sort about herself.
- Fixing things, self-explanatory.
- Piles of junk and scrap metal, through which she has had many an adventure.
- Modifying things, particularly living things. (See ‘Rupert’. Note: She only modifies things if she thinks it will be useful or will amuse her. She does not outright harm anything.)
- Rupert, her cat (cyborg cat), with whom she co-exists. This slinky grey beast has a special eye called a ‘mechanical monocle’, of which the doctor is quite fond (more so than the cat.)

DISLIKES : – Close-minded people, they don’t let the world expand.
- Lawyers. (No comment, see previous.)
- Making things. She much prefers to fix pre-made things, making things requires one to start with nothing. Nothing is something she is not in possession of.
- Super sticky sweet edibles, it’s a long story (which includes sticky buns, bunny rabbits, and a glass door.)

LOOKS : Her looks include, but are not limited to: being of average height, having honey brown hair, and eyes like the morning mist, with the addition of rimless glasses when her goggles are not in use. This essentially translates into being covered in dirt and grime, grease and slime. Not to mention the mussing of her various canvas skirts, patterned vest, crinkled white shirt, leather boots and frivolous top hat. All of these include, but are not limited to, the further addition of metal gears, cogs, and ‘swirly things’ all rolled up into this one of a kind ‘mechanic’. (The image is not accurate. The image was based on myself and the outfit I created for her at a convention. However, it's still pretty good.)

PERSONALITY : It is perhaps just as possible as it is impossible to describe Arlette in so many words. On one hand of the spectrum, she is perfectly sane in everything she does. But of course, this side of the spectrum is reserved solely for those whom society has classified (with big red stickers, one might add) as ‘eccentric’. There is a friendly joy to her peculiarity, and a powerful compelling nature to her personality that propels her forward with huge smiles and secrets abound. Ridiculous at times, genius at other, she can fix anything with a strange sort of know-how. When her ability is challenged however, there is a ferocious intensity to her which borderlines various things (such as ‘show-off’, ‘stern and serious’, or even ‘apathetic’.) These brief lapses of sense cause nothing short of a catastrophe, usually involving the destruction of one or more pile of junk and the throwing of large heavy metallic objects to the floor. But by no means does this make her irresponsible! She is constantly aware of her surroundings and conscious of others, always making sure that her experiments affect no one but herself (and the subject in question). Her nonsensical activities when rational include various things like doing her job and oiling the cat’s machinery. In laymen’s terms, she is as easy to read as a book. Granted, the book is probably in Latin, but that never stopped most people from looking at the pretty symbols.

HISTORY : It begins, perhaps, in a mechanical town that shall not be named, with the birth of a child that shall also not be named. Thrust into a world of abandonment, rather than orderly nurturing, this particular little girl’s reality became a little crooked and her individuality was inevitable. Raised by a scruffy plump man, who knew her as Arlette Cloverlily, and who was known to her only as ‘Grandfather’, she was surrounded day in and out by the oddest mechanisms of mechanical machinery that one might find in the possession of a mechanic. Fascinated by this, much as a pocket watch is fascinated by time, she grew up to learn many a craft and trade in the art of doctoring mechanical things. However this description is not quite apt for what happened, but merely provides only the vaguest hints of the truth with which young Cloverlily could ‘do’ things. It became publically known, shortly after her personal file disappeared from record, that a one Dr. Arlette Amelia Cloverlily V had opened shop in a quaint little cobblestone street city. And in this shop, she fixes things. For just about anyone! (Afterall, she has to pay the bills somehow!) But that is all. Beyond that, the truth is a secret which she guards carefully, ever so very carefully. It is said to be something magical, something mechanical. It is also said that her beloved cat Rupert is the culmination of her secrets, but what this could mean, one might only guess.

Arlette's Monologue
Oh! Hello! I suppose I didn't see you there! My name is Dr. Arlette Amelia Cloverlily V! I fix things. Why what do I fix? Everything of course. Anything from people, to animals, to objects, really. This is my shop. It's great isn't it? Anything you could ever want all organized in piles on the floor. We just got in a shipment of amber discs and mythril cogs the other day. And I fixed up the discombobulater engine if you'd like to take a look? No? Ah well then! Feel free to take a look around. Oh! But be wary of Rupert won't you? He does so love to lurk around and play games. He's such a mischievous little thing. He's distinguishable by his mechanical monocle, which is one of my fonder inventions you know. Ah, why when he was a kit, dropped a nail right through his eye. Poor darling! He went stark blind shortly after. I simply couldn’t let the dear be a Cyclops, wretched things those are. You know… I had a fellow in here the other day. He had dark hair and the brightest blue eyes I’ve ever seen! He said he works for the Duke! The Duke he said! The Brass Duke! Why, I’ve never had anyone in my shop that worked for the Brass Duke! He asked for some of the most outrageous things, and was completely dumbfounded when I managed to present nearly all of them to him with the utmost precision. Normally I’m quite tolerable but I grew tired of listening him and watch his eyes rove over all the corners of my shop. He was a rather pompous lad, doubting my skill at first, but he quickly grew captivated and even ordered a custom turbine with amber specially made by me (though I had to drag him down to my basement to prove my worth, aheh). Two funnels and six inch cogs for the turbine. A wondrous machine really. It was almost a catastrophe when Rupert decided to take it upon himself to adjust the aether output a fraction. Fortunately, it continued working splendidly! Though I must admit, it did make a few strange sounds the last time I tested it, but the fellow hasn’t come back so I can only assume he and the Duke found it in working order. I’ve expressly forbid Rupert from touching the mechanics, but he’s so very difficult. He’s absolutely refused to listen to a word I’ve said. Merely I find him going through my piles just as fervently as I myself might! It is a wonder, oh indeed it is, but I cannot help but think he has another motive. I daresay the mechanical magical monocle has made a kitty genius out of him, though I suppose he was always the feline prodigy. Which reminds me of a funny thing someone said to me once. Someone once said that, in laymen’s terms, I was as easy to read as a book. Though the book was probably in Latin, that didn’t stop most people from trying to understand it’s pretty symbols. Oh! But do forgive my ramblings! May I help you?

(I wrote this for my Acting class, and performed it as well.)

Fel Essences

( Note: I need to come up with better descriptions of all of them... but at least you get the point... eheh. )

Nontoxic Mercury
Description : Mercury, once said to drive a person mad. But what's with this? It seems this particular vial of mercury has no effects whatsoever! It is neither toxic nor maddening. Why isn't that the strangest thing of all?

Reason : I have a thing for Alice In Wonderland. The Mad Hatter. And Mad Hatter's disease as a result. Mad Hatter's disease was caused by the mercury they used to put into the hats. And I thought, wouldn't it be fun if it wasn't poisonous at all? What an anomaly!

Research : "Mad hatter disease is a disease of the nervous system caused by mercury poisoning. The name refers to the effects of chronic mercury exposure on hatters who had to work with mercury-treated fur and felt. It was an occurrence in the 1800s. Mercury was once used in the making of hats. This is known to affect the nervous systems of the hatter, causing them to shake and seem insane. Mercury exposure can cause aggressiveness, irrational behavior and mood swings."

Finite Eternal Water (Deadly FoY Water/name up for change)
Description : Fresh from the Fountain of Youth! A vial filled with magic water. However, the strangest things have happened to those who drink this. It seems that instead of being the key to living forever, it shortens your life ten-fold! It would be nothing short of suicide to sample this deadly elixir.

Reason : Living forever is overrated. I think it'd be a real joke on everyone if the water from the esteemed Fountain of Youth was nothing more than deadly water that just made life go by faster. Instead of having forever, you'd have nearly nothing at all. Those who want more than what they are given are greedy... go read Aesop's fables.

Research : "The Fountain of Youth is a legendary spring that reputedly restores the youth of anyone who drinks of its waters. The Fountain of Youth lives on as a metaphor for anything that potentially increases longevity. It is a frequently used plot device in age regression stories."

Poisonous Panacea
Description : This wondrous plant is the key to the universal cure-all known, or at least it was. There seems to be something wrong with it. The sick who have taken medication made from this plant have all seemed to die. Rather than being the elixir of life, it seems nothing less than a harbinger of death. So much for that. And don't even ask what happened when that poor alchemist tried to turn common metal into gold with it!

Reason : I guess it's kind of similar to the previous one. But I like alchemy, and Panacea has always fascinated me since the 8th grade. I guess it's just really intriguing.

Research : "The panacea (pronounced /pænəˈsiːə/), named after the Greek goddess of healing, Panacea, also known as panchrest, was supposed to be a remedy that would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely. It was sought by the alchemists as a connection to the elixir of life and the philosopher's stone, a mythical substance which would enable the transmutation of common metals into gold."

Unholy Water
Description : Once thought to strike down anything that goes against the better goodness of nature, this holy water seems to shimmer with a tainted stain about it's surface. Instead of being a blessing from the miraculous place from which it has flown, it causes only misfortune (and rather bad burns and rashes.) This water certainly won't protect anyone!

Reason : I'll be honest here... when I think of holy water, some of the first things I think of are vampires. I'm a vampire fanatic. Holy water highly reminds me of certain shows, books, and whatnot that I like. So why not twist it a little to protect the things I love the most?

Research : "Some Roman Catholics believe that water from Lourdes and other holy wells and shrines have supernatural powers, such as for healing. This water, technically, is not holy water in the same sense as traditional holy water since it has not been consecrated by a priest or bishop. Other Christian groups have sold water from the Jordan River and called it holy water asof the baptism of the Christ. In the Orthodox Church there have been many springs of water throughout the centuries that have been believed to be miraculous, some of which still flow to this day, such as the one at Pochaev Lavra in Ukraine, and the Life-Giving Spring of the Theotokos in Constantinople (commemorated on Bright Friday). Holy water is frequently used in fantasy stories and role playing as a weapon against the undead particularly vampires." I picked this definition of holy water to show that, despite it not being blessed by a priest, it can still be a natural thing. This is because I'm pretty sure man-made things cannot be considered fel essences.

Rubber Bones
Description : Left behind by who knows what, these are the strangest bones ever found. To say the creature that had them was flexible would be an understatement. These bones seem to bend and twist without any problem at all! In fact, if it wasn't for the seemingly hard texture and marrow clearly inside, most people might mistake them for toy rubber bones. Genetics really messed up this time.

Reason : It was a random thought. No relation to the manga/anime One Piece intended, really. In fact, this idea is probably one of my least favorites, but I'd rather put it up than not.

Research : "Bones are rigid organs that form part of the endoskeleton of vertebrates. They function to move, support, and protect the various organs of the body, produce red and white blood cells and store minerals. Bone tissue is a type of dense connective tissue. Because bones come in a variety of shapes and have a complex internal and external structure they are lightweight, yet strong and hard, in addition to fulfilling their many other functions. One of the types of tissue that makes up bone is the mineralized osseous tissue, also called bone tissue, that gives it rigidity and a honeycomb-like three-dimensional internal structure. Osseous tissue, or bone tissue, is the major structural and supportive connective tissue of the body. Osseous tissue forms the rigid part of the bone organs that make up the skeletal system."

Liquefied Lapis Lazuli
Description : Found in the hollow of a rock crevice, this liquid version of the rare and precious Lapis gem is quite strange. It has the texture of thick blue-ish paint, flecked with gold and white. Whatever has happened to this once beautiful and noble rock?

Reason : Lapis is one of my favorite stones, enough said. Needless to say, this is also one of my favorite essence choices.

Research : "Lapis lazuli (sometimes abbreviated to lapis) is a relatively rare, semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense blue color. Lapis lazuli is a rock, not a mineral: whereas a mineral has only one constituent, lapis lazuli is formed from more than one mineral. Lapis takes an excellent polish and can be made into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics, ornaments and vases. In architecture it has been used for cladding the walls and columns of palaces and churches. It was also ground and processed to make the pigment ultramarine for tempera paint and, more rarely, oil paint. Its usage as a pigment in oil paint ended in the early 19th century as a chemically identical synthetic variety, often called French Ultramarine, became available. In ancient Egypt lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and ornaments such as scarabs; it was also used by the Assyrians and Babylonians for seals. Lapis jewelry has been found at excavations of the Predynastic Egyptian site Naqada (3300–3100 BC), and powdered lapis was used as eyeshadow by Cleopatra. As inscribed in the 140th chapter of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, lapis lazuli, in the shape of an eye set in gold, was considered an amulet of great power. On the last day of the month, an offering was made before this symbolic eye, for it was believed that, on that day, the supreme being placed such an image on his head."

Florescent Blue Amber
Description : It is said that this rare piece of blue amber glows it's natural colors when in direct sunlight. However, this piece seems to be glowing eternally! What's even stranger, is that it retains it's beautiful blue shimmering appearance. The glow that results is nothing short of an interesting phenomenon...

Reason : I really have to work on this one; it could be LOADS of fun and AWESOME. The only problem is... it's a little difficult because I'm not quite sure I understand. I'd need to get my hands on some real Dominican Republic Blue Amber to really see what happens. Still, it's beautiful and fascinating isn't it?

Also, I know that Tangaroa/Vashtya has Growing Amber, still I think this is different enough to be plausible...

Research : "When natural light strikes Blue Amber on a white surface, the light particles pass right through, and then are refracted off the white surface. Result: the Blue Amber has a slight blue hue. When the same natural light particles strike the Amber on a black surface, the light particles don't refract off the black surface, thus refracting off the actual Amber. Hydrocarbons in the Blue Amber turn the sun's ultraviolet light into blue light particles, resulting in the glow of Blue Amber. This effect is only possible in the Dominican Republic Blue Amber category and in some Mexican amber. Any other Amber (such as Baltic Amber) will not display this phenomenon, because its original resin is not from the Hymenaea protera tree. Recently, optical absorption, fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence measurements in Dominican ambers have been reported. These studies show that the "blue" variety reveals an intense fluorescence emission in the visible wavelength region, between 430 and 530 nm, with spectral features which are typical of aromatic hydrocarbons. On the contrary, the Dominican "red" and "yellow" amber varieties have a much weaker and featureless emission, although still do have a certain fluorescence. The process in Blue Amber is surprisingly similar to phosphor. The difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence is basically only the amount of time that the glowing element glows. Under artificial light, the amber appears like ordinary amber, but under sunlight it has an intense fluorescent blue glow. When held against the sun it will appear like ordinary amber, and under ultraviolet light it will glow a bright milky-blue. This effect can be compared to the ocean, which, although transparent, can appear anything from light blue to dark blue to black, depending on depth, mass, salinity, etc."

Uncharged Lightening
Description : Using an elaborate mechanism, with all intents to bottle lightening and harness it's extreme power, you've managed to capture this stray bolt that has shot from the sky. However, there's something wrong. Whenever you try to check the power readings, it's impossible. There is no energy in this bolt of lightening bouncing around inside it's container. That's right, this extravagant piece of lightening is completely uncharged!

Reason : Even though Jasper has domain over Black Lightening... there are two existing clouds as fel essences. I cannot help but think I should fill out this idea anyway... will do so when can will self to...

Research : Lightening can have either a positive or negative charge. It has to have a charge to be shot down from the clouds. It is a release of an excess of energy.

Living Metal (metal tbd)
Description : It's impossible! It simply cannot be true! And yet, it seems this piece of solid metal is living and breathing. Look, it's even covered in tiny holes where air must pass through! It seems to act very much like a lump of coral, but how on earth this piece of brass came to be a living organism, no one is quite sure. How very peculiar.

Reason : Mmm metal.

Research : Uh. Coral is solid and it breathes. Metal is solid too. Let's make it breathe. (There's more research but I feel like it'd be a waste of space.)

Astral Rain
Description : It rained last night and filled up an empty container that was left outside. From a distance it looked to be just normal rain, but upon closer inspection there is something very stellar about it. Something almost unworldly! It sparkles and shimmers like particles of rainbow dust and upon touching it, it acts like liquid but it seems to be almost slightly denser than that. This particular vial of rain seems to have come straight from the heavens made from stardust. But real liquid coming from space... and making it all the way to the surface? It seems almost too good to be true!

As the rain fell, it felt somehow different than all those other times. I could feel it as the drops rolled off my skin, leaving a trail of shining light down my arms. The droplets were dense, slightly rubbery in texture before they popped and they felt almost filled with dust and sparkles. Under the reflection of the moon, starlight bounced off of wherever the rain drops hit. I've managed to store some in a small glass vial and upon closer inspection have determined it to be rain made of star dust from space. How could such a substance become a liquid? And how could it have fallen from space? How very stellar!

Reason : It's cool isn't it? You know it is.

Research : Stardust is in space. Rain is on the planet. Combine the two and get something AWESOME.

Raw Orichalcum Ore
I'm pretty dead set on this soul. If I have a choice at a soul, this is the one I intend to use hands down. I believe that, since it is unprocessed, by shop definition it could still be considered 'living' and thus has a soul (this information was given to be someone on staff, so unless Dr. Kyou himself says otherwise, I'm going to believe it). The reason why I chose Orichalcum? Well...

"Orichalcum is a fictional metal mentioned in several ancient writings, most notably the story of Atlantis as recounted in the Critias dialogue, recorded by Plato. According to Critias, orichalcum was considered second only to gold in value, and was found and mined in many parts of Atlantis in ancient times. The name derives from the Greek ορείχαλκος, oreichalkos (from όρος, oros, mountain and χαλκός, chalkos, copper or bronze), meaning "mountain copper" or "mountain metal". The Romans transliterated "orichalcum" as "aurichalcum", which was thought to literally mean "gold copper". It has been alternatively held to be a gold/copper alloy, a copper-tin or copper-zinc brass, or a metal no longer known. The Andean alloy tumbaga fits the same description, being a gold/copper alloy. However, in Vergil's Aeneid it was mentioned that the breastplate of Turnus was "stiff with gold and white orachalc" and it has been theorised that it is a mix of gold and silver, though it is not known for certain what orichalcum was."

Orichalcum is also called 'Wizard's Stone'.

"A wizard's stone is a prized thing indeed. It is a heavy metallic mineral which has a deep reddish gold hue. This stone, known to mages as orichalcum, is one of the few substances able to store raw magical energy and the only one which is "rechargeable". The manner in which this is accomplished is imperfectly understood. A complicated refining process is necessary to purify and shape orichalcum into a useable form. The mass of any one piece determines how much energy it can store and its purity dictates the amount of energy that can be channeled through it (i.e. the level of spell that can be cast using just energy from this stone). The two images above depict unrefined orichalcum ore and refined orichalcum (set in an iron mount).

Orichalcum's ability to store magical energy makes it invaluable in spell casting and magical research. It is an efficient storage medium and useful because it can be used many times over. However, orichalcum does not last forever. With regular use, the mineral quickly loses its ability to store energy. In a wizard’s lab, where it might see weekly use, a brick of orichalcum will last about a year. Heavy use, such as the daily use of an adventuring wizard, will completely wear out a chunk of orichalcum within 3-4 months.

Orichalcum is an extremely hard and brittle mineral and exceptionally difficult to mine. It takes a great deal of time to mine even a small amount of the mineral. Orichalcum mining is also a dangerous activity as there are a number of hazards including spontaneous detonations of magical energy and the Burning, a malady associated with long term exposure to orichalcum dust. Precautions must be take against these and other hazards which further makes orichalcum mining a slow and expensive process." - This research is from here.

Also... it has to be something Dr. Arlette could get her hands on. She doesn't really like leaving the shop... but someone could accidentally deliver her some raw orichalcum, it wouldn't be odd.

Occult Temple Ghost
Uh well, this is my back up plan, so it's not thought out very well. Again, the main purpose was to think of something Arlette would go and get. Really, she wouldn't go out of her way to get anything at all. However, if someone begged her to come fix something, and say perhaps she owed them a favor... and let us continue with this hypothetical situation by saying that she brought the bottle with her?

Well... if she was to fix something at an occult temple. Perhaps one of their shrine mechanics or something. She doesn't question why they have machinery. It's occult for a reason. Perhaps there are some lingering angry spirits left around, and oops! She seems to have the bottle in the temple! And it seems that overnight it just happened to absorb one of these wandering demonic spirits that inhabit the temple.

No need to be specific about it.

Chameleon
To be filled in...

You have so many essences, it's amazing. So instead of describing each and every one, I will focus on the ones I find most promising:

Rubber bones seems like a lot of fun! We have yet to have a Frei involved with bones or hearts or any other body part, really. I wonder if "bone" is really an appropriate word though. I feel like the term "fossil" or something else should be used to describe it, to give it a more mystical, exotic feel, something that suits the story of the Storm more. Play with the idea of bones more- I'm really intrigued by this idea :3

Living Metal is an amusing essence to consider as well, but I'm not sure about how..it breathing. I understand where you're coming from but.. I don't know. It's not a very magnificent essence to envision. Tweak it a bit. Keep the metal aspect but as I was telling Loki, try and think of something more..dramatic for the metal, or play up a trait of metal that is overlooked.

Astral Rain sounds like it might be a little difficult with Rivener and Prajna but I agree, do not just toss the idea. It's very interesting as we lack a space-type Frei. Riv and Praj are both involved with the sky in a sense, stars, but yours is more of an outer space kind of deal and I like that. Reminds me very much so of Sisay ; w ;

I'd like to see how you would incorporate some of these essences into the powers of your Raevan, how they would influence the abilities, before I critique any more. XD;; Sorry.

I do like your Orichalcum soul though. I like that ore <3

Well... I mostly came up with the essence ideas purely for the two-headed cobra contest... and since that fell through, I was gonna concentrate more on the souls. owo I appreciate the input though and uhm well I'd have to know more about the Raevan to think of what sort of powers it'd get and since I don't want a custom, I didn't want to define that sort of thing, but I have -some- abilities in mind.

Uhm so you mean like a rubber fossil? >< I dunno, rubber fossil bones? That seems a little weird and out of place, but I guess that's the point neh?

And I was treating the metal like coral. So like how coral is a kind of breathing rock-thing... it's like metal coral... owo;

Astral Rain is what I used in the contest =O so there didn't seem to be a problem cuz it got past the first round and it's by far my favorite one. owo; If there was another soul contest, I'd probably use it again. xD;

And yes... orichalcum ftw. <3
