Horror Inc. Art Contest - Open to All

I just had my second interview at the New England Aquarium today for a volunteer position and I got it! I'm so excited! I'm going to be working with the tanks in the freshwater gallery. So i'll be taking care of the red tailed cat fish, piranhas, turtles, electric eels, freshwater rays, dart frogs, the anacondas, all kinds of really cool stuff like that.

It's so cool behind the exhibits! I was like a kid in a candy store back there. I think my enthusiasm really helped sell me. I can't wait til August! That's when I'll start. It's required that you volunteer one full day a week, but you can do more than that too!

Oh man that's awesome. Aquariums are always fun. Is there special requirements one has to have to even land any kind of job there? I know you're just volunteering, I'm just curious.

Take good care of them fishies smile

Horror Inc. Art Contest - Open to All

I actually looked that up today to see if I qualified for any. There aren't a lot of job positions open as you'd imagine, and you can only view the requirements for the open ones. I'm sure you need to have a degree in whatever you'll be specializing in. Most of the work done at the aquarium is by volunteers and interns from what I can tell. Each section has a Senior Staff Member (kind of like a manager) and I assume they get paid, as well as the veterinarian and the ticket takers. I'd imagine in order to work there you'd have to have experience in the field and/or have volunteered or had an internship somewhere like it.

The process to become a volunteer there is a lot like getting a job. Most people hear the word volunteer and think they'll accept whoever wants to help. But you have to send in your resume, an application, go through two interviews, etc. And you have to do it early too, because the slots fill up quick. Some of the volunteer positions require a degree even. And I wasn't qualified to feed/clean the penguin tanks because I'm an inch too short! =P

Congrats, Vanilla! I've done behind the scenes tours at the aquarium at the zoo here in Nebraska. It was great. We went above the tanks and as I was standing at the edge of the water looking down into the water one of the larger sharks chose that time to swim up towards be. I could have reached out at touched it, but I'm smart enough not too. I love zoos in general, and aquariums are always neat.

Very cool Naomi! Our aquarium has a big tank with an open top, but the sharks don't really come near the top. It'd be neat to see one as close as that. But there's no way I'm volunteering as one of the Giant Ocean Tank Divers. At least not now anyway.

I live in Wisconsin, we don't have an aquarium that I'm aware of, so I have to go down to Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago. It's amazing there. I'm really happy that you got the job, Vanilla! I'd like to have a job like that, it sounds cool. I think I'd do the Giant Ocean Tank Divers job. It sounds fun.

Thanks! I'm waiting on that one til I have more experience with the dangerous creatures. According to the aquarium, the only injuries the divers get are usually from small territorial fish, and they pack a big bite, you gotta learn to avoid them. The sharks, rays, and barracuda tend to leave them alone.

I like the fact that I'll be working with the piranhas. I reaaaaally want to set up a piranha tank when I have a house, but they're illegal here. So this will likely be my only chance to take care of them. Also the Giant Pacific Octopus. He's adorable! And of course, the rtc, my favorite fish in the aquarium.

Something that really impressed him was when he opened the anaconda enclosure. He opened it and I leaned right over the barrier for a better look. After we were done there he told me most people get scared and kinda back away when he does that. I don't know why, they're only snakes. They think one of them is pregnant! That's exciting.

I think every state should have an aquarium! Because fish are awesome! So if you vote for me, I will make sure all 50 states have access to quality aquariums. Vote Vanilla 2012.

Coolest thing ever: Playing with an octopus. I was scared to at first, but then I just went for it. It feels like someone is sucking on your arm, but the scary part is pulling him off. Because you don't want to hurt him but he's unbelievably strong so in the end you have to be really forceful to get him off of you, and it doesn't seem to mind so I imagine it didn't hurt him either.

That's really sweet. I'd like hanging out with an Octopus.

Why are villains called strange names? Doc Ock was not the scariest guy, and The Octopus from The Spirit was smart but surrounded himself with dumb people like Lex Luthor and his cronies.

I dunno. Maybe because octopi are scary looking? And they have 8 tentacles that are strong as hell with all these suction cups all over them? And beak that can take a finger off? (And they're cute and cuddly and playful =3=3=3)

I wanna hang with an octopus!!

Once, at an aquarium, I got to feed one. Well, sortof. She was getting lazy, they said, so I got to put a jar willed with fisheis in her tank. It was fuun...

Once, also, when I was in high school, we went on a behind the scenes trip at Seaworld, and we were on this thing that like, falls down to show the sharks better, and I accidently hit the button that did that...So we went swimming...With sharks...

And not only did I get expelled, but I also learned that hammerhead sharks, if you're nice, are quite playful.

And thankies, Vanill,a for makin' me the vice.
bote Vanilla/Jynx, 2012!!

Course...I'm not old enough yet...
