Happy to get away from her new roommate Ollen walked slowly looking for the dragonhealer. She was told his name is Cordel, and that he would be able to answer all the questions she had about firelizards. Did she have many! Ahoy was driving the tall girl a bit nutty, the little dimglow enjoyed pulling hair and being obnoxious, even for a just being hatched less than a sevenday ago.

Chirping excitedly the little green perched happily in Ollen's hands, tail wrapped around her wrists. Ollen entered the infirmary looking around, where was the Dragonhealer stationed again.

"Why didn't I ask anyone what Cordel looks like?" She spoke to the little green in her hands, "This would be a lot easier."

Well, Cordel was done panicking about the eggs. As both W’ten and K’em had pointed out, it wasn’t like there was anything that could be done for the eggs other than make sure no one else could touch them. There was even talk of closing up the crack in the wall, just to make sure no more Candidates could sneak in! Not that there was any risk of that. Even Favan wasn’t able to convince Cheoth to move from her eggs. The dragonhealer did his part mostly by leaving lots of waterskins outside, along with a basin, so Cheoth could at least drink.

Currently, the Healer was more intent on preparing for the bloodbath to come. The Apprentice Healers----not including his La, of course, who was off participating in wing drills----had brought in a new batch of herbs. Technically, it was their job to separate out the useful parts, but Cordel wasn’t in the mood for mistakes. This had to be done perfectly. When the mauling happened, he didn’t want someone grabbing an aconite flower by mistake just because someone put it in with the hops.

The Healer looked up as someone mentioned his name and blinked a little before going to the door. “Yes? Someone is looking for me?” Anything had to be better than sorting out the useful parts of plants, he had to admit. “Well? Speak up, I don’t have all day.”

"I-I am," Ollen spoke and Ahoy chirped to prove their point she walked up to the dagonhealer holding the little green. She did not know that La was his apprentice, although she knew that the other woman had started an apprenticeship. She would've felt more comfortable going to the greenrider than to a man she did not know.

"My name is Ollen, I've got this firelizard hear..and I have a few questions," she looked at at Cordel with hope. The little thing was drying out and she knew she was supposed to be rubbing oil into her hide, the tall girl just didn't know what kind of oil or what herbs.

"I got her from a woman who thought she was dead in her egg, and I want to make sure she's okay." She stood awkwardly just beside the door he stood in.

Firelizards again. It hadn’t been very long ago that a pair of Candidates had come by to ask Cordel how many eggs a Gold firelizard could produce. Briefly, the man had to wonder if this was one of those eggs… but those eggs probably hadn’t hatched yet, he figured. “Fine, bring her in then,” he said, finally moving out of the way so Ollen and her new ward could enter the room.

He hurriedly cleared off a space on the table and moved a glow basket closer. “Let’s take a look at her. I can tell you now, she needs to be oiled more.” For the love of Faranth, didn’t they teach Candidates anything these days? And a Weyrbrat would not have permission to miss something like that as far as Cordel was concerned… but, he supposed he ought to get the whole story before jumping to conclusions. “Is she alright with being touched?”

Ollen entered and sat the little green down where indicated, she looked at Cordel hopefully. Ahoy seemed to be in good health..but she was not a dragonhealer and did not know much about firelizard health.

"What type of oil?.... She's friendly enough, she likes to be rubbed. I don't think she would mind." Ollen tried to convey a feeling of safety to Ahoy and smiled at Cordel. Ahoy looked up at the too large humans looking like she's wondering what is going on.

"I don't mean to bug you, I know that you must be busy with that girl touching the eggs," She bobbed her head as she spoke.

Making the usual series of ‘kissy’ noises that most people make on seeing some new and cute creature, Cordel held out a hand for Ahoy’s inspection. Really, the trick was to just keep the Green focused on his hand long enough so he could get a look at the rest of her hide and, hopefully, a feel for it too. Just like with human skin, you couldn’t just slap on some oil and be done with it. It had to be the right type…

He snorted at mention of the eggs and shook his head. “Not really. There’s nothing that can be done for them. With Cheoth in a rage, there’s no way to even see if the eggs are still alive. Since they were touched early on in development, they might be ok; it’s possible that this girl didn’t depress the shell enough to touch the baby dragons. And, even if we did know their status, there wouldn’t be anything to do about them… it would only distress Gold Cheoth further.”

Not that Cordel really saw it this way; these were K’em’s words, mostly, as the Brownrider had attempted to stop his friend from rushing to his doom. He managed to stroke the firelizard’s back a few times, trying to get an idea of how dry the skin usually was. “Right… top shelf, second bottle to the right, the one with the green lid.”

Ahoy stretched her body smelling the human's hand, this was not her human and she rather liked her human, she gave tastey things and liked to rub. The fire lizard's hide was not to the point of cracking, but was very dry maybe a few days away from becoming a real problem. She knew she itched but did not have a way to relieve that itch. Ahoy chirped at his touch and leaned into his hand.

Ollen nodded, "I hope they're okay." she hoped hers was on the sands, maybe not this hatching but some hatching. She tried hard not to think of one of the eggs being Her and never born.

"I met the most wonderful rider, and I cannot think of a dragon like Isonth or any other dragon coming into the world." She spoke as she followed his fingers and retrieved the bottle she was instructed to select.

Opening it she inhaled the sweet scent and wondered if Ahoy would enjoy smelling delicious. The young woman thought a lot of little Ahoy, she might be the closest the tall woman got to having anything like a dragon. She handed the bottle over. "That smells amazing! Did you mix this?"

“Hopefully, they’re alright.” It was a noncommittal answer because Cordel couldn’t really say anything else. In all honesty, he was more worried about the Candidates. The Touchings were meant to save lives and prevent maulings; by all indications, they had done something, but… there wasn’t going to be a Touching this time. But this wasn’t something that Ollen needed to know; she, doubtlessly, already knew the risks and had made her choice.

“Oh, you know Isonth?” he asked, somewhat surprised. In retrospect, he knew he shouldn’t have been too surprised; it wasn’t like La didn’t have a social life or anything. “That particular bottle of oil was mixed up by Isonth’s rider, Lanakirene. She’s my Apprentice. It’s made especially for firelizards and dragons with more sensitive and dryer skin…” Why, yes; Cordel was proud of La’s progress.

Smearing a little on his finger, he held out a hand for Ahoy’s inspection once more before attempting to get some on the firelizard’s hide. Just a little, at first, in case there was some sort of negative reaction.

"Well, I don't know her or Lanakirene all that well, but Isonth was very pushy and wanted me to scratch her and it was wonderful," Ollen blushed, she liked La, she was attractive and Ollen found herself thinking of the rider fondly, they may have met briefly, but Ollen really respected the other woman.

"I will have to compliment her on such a wonderful mix, especially if it helps Ahoy," she beamed at the little green. Ahoy sniffed the mixture and her tongue darted out to taste it, shaking her head and hoping the mint colored fire lizard chirped excitedly.

"I think she likes it," she chuckled out, "Are they hard to train? I've been talking to her slowly hoping she will pick up on commands and places that I frequent. like saying 'room' each time we enter our room."

If Ollen was hoping that Cordel would reveal more about La or Isonth, she would be disappointed; as far as the Healer was concerned, that was private information. If La wanted Ollen to know anything, she’d tell the Candidate herself. The most the Healer himself gave away was a mild shrug and a comment of, “They’re both very helpful and capable learners.”

He smiled at the mint-colored ‘lizard and scratched her eyeridges briefly. “Well, just keep an eye on her hide. If it gets worse in any way in the next twenty-four candlemarks, stop using the oil and come back for a different kind.”

As he poured some of the oil into a smaller vial for Ollen, Cordel considered the question. “Well, they can be intelligent creatures. Golds are especially smart. The Greens are supposedly dumber, but it depends more on the individual firelizard in question. I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts to associate certain sounds with certain things. They pick up on routines very quickly.”

Ollen nodded enthusiastically, she had not meant for Ahoy to get this bad, and she wanted her little companion to stay with her. She would most certainly make sure to keep her eyes on the pastel hide. "I don't want her to hurt or itch."

"So repetition would work well with her? If she is supposedly dumber than saying things over and over and doing the same thing every day?" Ollen really did not have any particular reason for training Ahoy, other than having a well behaved companion, and feeling accomplished that her firelizard would not run amuck and make messes. Perhaps fishing with her would be a good sport for the both of them.

The tall candidate was extremely grateful to Cordel, she was in luck to even have the firelizard and did not want to blow her chance by forcing the firelizard to go between.

“She’s still pretty young,” Cordel mused thoughtfully. “She’ll need to be oiled several times a day. They grow a lot at this stage, so their hides crack easily if you don’t watch them.” The Healer gave the firelizard another careful scratch to the eyeridges and peered at her wings. Everything seemed to be in good form, but he figured that he might as well make sure Ahoy was alright.

“Yes, repetition would work well. Just be careful not to get into a routine… firelizards pick up bad habits fast. I lived with someone,” read, girlfriend, “who had a firelizard. He would wake up every morning before sunrise and start chewing on anything he could find. He only did this because he knew it would wake me up. That’s what I mean.”

“It would probably be easier to just think of what you want from her and make sure that you reward good behavior. And make sure that she connects the reward to her behavior.”

Ahoy rather liked the man, he scratched well, and he put good smelling stuff on her. She chirped and leaned into the healer's hands.

Ollen nodded, she thought that perhaps shw might so well with training the firelizard, it was only a guess time would tell. She thought herself strong willed and that perhaps that would win over Ahoy. She worried though, that if she did not have the knowledge to train her her efforts were pointless. The little mint green was still young barely a few days old and they took time to train. Well..all the young woman had was time. Waiting, working, and waiting for the Hatching, and if need be other Hatchings to come.

"Shells, I would never want her to chew my things, or my roomates' things."

She paused her train of thought and turned to him her tone serious, "Thank you so much, Dragonhealer Cordel, I was so worried I would be terrible with her," blood rushed to her tan cheeks and her face crew warm in frustration, "I just..can't stand thinking I could do wrong by the little thing, she's so sweet." Ollen did not mention that she felt if she could not do well by a firelizard then how possibly could she be with a dragon.

Ahoy felt the distress and frustration and with a worried croon fluttered into Ollen's arm, clinging to her chest.

Well, this was nice wasn’t it? It was nice to have a patient who didn’t complain about every little thing that Cordel did. Of course, he had been dealing with mostly human patients for the time being, a fact that certainly helped… “She’ll be fine,” he said, feeling a bit like he was repeating himself here. “Try and keep her with you most of the time, if you’re allowed to. I don’t know the policy on firelizards during lessons, but the rest of the time should be fine. She’ll need to be socialized with other firelizards and people.”

Although, with Ahoy’s naturally sweet disposition, Cordel was sure it wouldn’t take much. “She’s one of the sweeter firelizards I’ve met recently,” he had to admit. “If you do anything wrong, she’ll be the first to let you know. Although it’ll take some time to get used to a firelizard… but, you’re a Candidate. I’m sure you’ll adjust quickly.”

And if that wasn’t enough, there was Mindhealer Chavel. Cordel hadn’t met the man yet, but he was supposedly good at training up firelizards.

Ollen took the bottle and slipped it into a pocket smiling, "I'm sorry to be such a bother, thank you." Ollen thought it would be easy enough to keep the little green with her, she was not very large and would be easy to tuck away.

"I'll be sure to pay attention to her and make sure she has every thing she needs." Ollen nodded sternly and held an arm out for the cuddly firelizard, "C'mere you." she spoke softly and was relieved when Ahoy took to the air and clung to her arm.

"We have to do, I have chores..if we need help again may we come to you?"
