I've started reading the creation of Middle-earth and the early Ages. It's taken me awhile to get around to this book. One of my friends gave me the book for Christmas, but I just kept putting it off because I've always heard how difficult the text was to read. But as it would turn out I am really liking it.
Anyone else here read it? What are your thoughts?

I read pretty much everything Tolkien ever had published when I was about 12. I liked them a lot back then, but I went back and tried to re-read a few of them more recently, and found them very...dry.
I had the same problem with Anne McCaffrey's work. sad

My brother had been telling me for years that I should read Tolkien, but I didn't take the time to do so until I was 17. Loved his books at the time and rereading them last year, I liked them even more.
But I have that fear of reading books that I read when I was younger and not liking them as much as when I did back then.
I'm still not very far in The Silmarillion, but I do like what I've read so far.

It is a very good book but I did find it a more challenging read.

I finished it and can say that I loved it. It was quite a challenging read.

I found the first 100 pages or so really hard going. That is to say the bits that were all about the creation of Middle Earth. It was just so many names and place and not a lot really happening. Once I got to the part where Melkor starts to ruin the Elves I really got draw in and I loved the rest of it.

Sauron is actually a pretty cool character in this book. I was kind of surprised.

I've also read most of Tolkien's work, even the stuff not pertaining to middle-earth. I read the Silmarillian freshmen year and found it was a tad dry, not as bad as Victor Hugo, but still dry. But keep it up you you'll be rewarded, the book is a masterpiece.

It seems like the more I think about it, the more I love the character of Turin. The story about the children of Hurin is tragic, but also probably my favorite of the stories from the First Age. Pride really is Turin's downfall.

Lunar Kissed It seems like the more I think about it, the more I love the character of Turin. The story about the children of Hurin is tragic, but also probably my favorite of the stories from the First Age. Pride really is Turin's downfall. If you liked the story of the children of Hurin you might want to read another of Tolkien's books, The Children of Hurin. It's a more in-depth telling of the same story that was published just a few years back. I love the hardback version especially, with all the beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee, I could stare at them for hours!

Seems I'm a little late to the party...
I actually just finished rereading Lord of the Rings for the third or fourth time and I've decided to give The Silmarillion a go.
It's looking to be a little bit daunting. I loved LotRs, but a friend of mine told me, "There's a reason the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are the popular ones."

Nesting Comments Seems I'm a little late to the party...I actually just finished rereading Lord of the Rings for the third or fourth time and I've decided to give The Silmarillion a go. It's looking to be a little bit daunting. I loved LotRs, but a friend of mine told me, "There's a reason the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are the popular ones." eek It's a bit overwhelming, but I find that a lot of the tales in Sil are probably better than LOTR and Hobbit. ninja The friend who gave me her copy called it the Elven Bible, but once you get past the creation of the world it's a bit easier to read and totally engrossing, I thought.
